I think the idea of Jenny being called XJ9 by her mother is more like your parents calling you Robert instead of Bob. It's a more formal way to say the name.

Yeah. I can understand identifying with Jenny in that she's trying to become something that she wasn't originally but I REALLY don't think that it was ever intended to be a one to one representation of being trans but rather meant to be something anyone can relate to. Bringing up the whole name thing was really bizarre. Kids and teens wanting to be called by a name that isn't their given one is a classic trope, whether it be because they want to be called by the name their friends call them by or by something "cooler" or because their actual name is embarrassing. What an out of nowhere take.

@@SpecterVonBaren That makes sense. The name bit seems to just be a thing for character introduction to show the relationship between Jenny and her mother. Though I think it's a bit weird because it's a bit ambiguous to what that relationship is from what I can remember. As a 1 to 1 allegory as trans I can see it in a way as Jenny is trying to be more human and be something she can't physically be. Though this I feel is more coincidental, and MLAATR themes were meant to be relatable to generally people who didn't fit in. More of a net approach then a hook approach in a sense.

Same. I know I can't actually speak for anyone in that community, but I can't genuinely see many people in that community actually being made uncomfortable by the whole XJ9 thing since it goes beyond simply identity. Not to mention Jenny just kinda drops the frustration rather quickly anyway, so it'd be heavily unrealistic to feel uncomfortable about it IRL after her initial insistence. Plus, it makes Dr. Wakeman stand out calling her that especially when it's not meant to insult her.

Been a while since I saw this show, but it's not unplausible that the Dr. would make a young robot either to try and have her work live on through youth or to take on a parent relationship. It doesn't seem as warm here as say Dr. Light to Mega Man since she's pushing the "XJ9" name for Jenny which is more of an "it" name meaning it's probably hard for her to see her as her own person. The Korra mistreatment I hear of seems to not really have happened the way a lot of people thought. I usually hear off it being that they didn't know that they would be given more episodes to work on or were jostled around, but supposedly the show was actually given the greenlight for all three seasons after the first really early(as in, they knew earlier in Korra that they were getting more seasons earlier than they did AtLA, which was actually done on a season by season schedule and could have ended at both the S1 or S2 Finale). The only "mistreatment" the show seems to have suffered seems to be that it was shoved off the main network in a huff later on, but that was when it underperformed in terms of viewership.

  • @pavloverboy

    @pavloverboy

    4 жыл бұрын

She split town, changed her name, and made a robot that could live the life of a normal girl that she could never live growing up as a kid genius with 10 siblings. Lisa is essentially trying to live her life through the eyes of a robot. Yep, seems about right. After all, child geniuses tend to go through a lot of anxiety and depression because of the pressure that comes with being super smart on top of social pressure to fit in. It's the reason why "nerd kid gets bullied" is such a common cliche. Kids like Lisa would have to deal with that more than anything, given that they can be seen as abnormally smart on top of already being weird for having 9 sisters and 1 brother. If Lisa had to go through high school the same way that a child of typical intelligence would (though I would assume that she would be in a special program or something similar), she'd probably have to deal with the aforementioned struggles and pressures of being an extremely smart child. Looking at it realistically, if Lisa wanted a child at some point in the future, she probably would have designed Jenny, a perfectly normal girl aside from the fact that she's, you know, a robot. Jenny would never have to face the same struggles that Lisa faced. It's why we even see Nora design a skin to allow Jenny to be more normal. She wants to grant what is essentially her child a life which she could never have. I know that I'm looking too deeply into the joke, but I genuinely want to explore that concept a bit more. Maybe if The Loud House gets cancelled, they could have a "where are they now" moment, with a little nod to MLAATR thrown in when they get to Lisa. I think it would be really fitting to have her basically become Nora.

2:43 It's kinda implied that part of Wakeman's motivation in designing Jenny and her sisters the way she did was out of a desire for a daughter of her own. Keep in mind her first world saving robot Armagedroid, lacked emotion and feelings for compassion which made him unstable. So what better way to solve this problem than to design the robot that she could develop a parent-child relationship with? 3:41 Thats funny since I've never been able to enjoy KP anywhere near as much.

I loved watching this show back in the day, especially for its main characters and that retro art style. The "Kim Possible" comparison you made is also spot-on. Both of these shows did a great job mixing fun action/adventure with high-school shenanigans, without making the latter element feel generic or obnoxious. I'm with you on how music scores deserve more attention, especially from animated television shows. The retro/sci-fi score of "Teenage Robot" is no exception. As for the whole thing of Mrs. Wakeman always calling Jenny 'XJ9,' I just took as another standard issue where parents call their kids by their birth name, while said kid prefers being called by some nickname they came up with. Either that, or a way to describe the scientist/creation relationship, like how Jumba almost always called Stitch 'Experiment 626.'

I LOVE the art direction behind this show. Beyond the 50s style to the design work, there's a lot of times when the animators try to experiment with the color schemes, particularly when she'd go into space. As a kid, I thought the simplified palette was weird and off-putting, but now I love what they did there. It's the kind of visual imagination that makes me especially appreciate animation.

The first time I watched it was with my siblings, and they complained that the female villain ripped off the Tiger Claws from Xiaolin Showdown because she ripped a hole through space and walked through it. If I had to make a list of my top 10 favorite Nickelodeon shows, it looks like this: 1) Avatar the Last Airbender 2)Danny Phantom 3) My Life as a Teenage Robot 4) Catscratch 5) Rugrats 6) Catdog 7) Ren and Stimpy 8) Making Fiends 9) Fairly Odd Parents 10) Spongebob Squarepants And the reason for why Fairly Odd Parents and Spongebob are so low on my list is because they were good shows that I loved as a kid but as I grew up got bad over time. Every other show on my list, in my opinion, all ended before they had a chance to get bad. Oh and for honorable mentions: 1) El Tigre 2) Kappa Mikey 3) The X's 4) Chalk Zone And these are honorable mentions because they're shows that I did watch as a kid but as I grew up I had forgotten all about them to the point where if I hear someone mention them, I go "Those shows really existed? Honestly, it seemed like a bit of the inspiration for this show came from Astro Boy. Though it goes well into the general 50s scifi ideas, some of the aesthetics style has an Astro Boy feel to it. I just assumed that Dr. Wakeman designing a "teenage girl" robot kind of mirrored the way Umataro Tenma designed a little boy robot. They simply took out the sad reason behind Astro Boy's design in favor of market appeal. So we get Dr. Wakeman designs a girl robot cuz.... potatoes, as you like to say.

"Some shows are better in hindsight"... And for me, MLATR was one of those shows. It was always a show I felt had the *potential* to be one of my favorites more than it was an actual favorite. The reason, unfortunately, was probably Jenny herself, or rather her over-used archetype: the super-powered "average" girl. When MLATR came out I'd just graduated from high school and never wanted to think about it again. EVER. Finally getting out of that hellhole was a dream come true for me, so a protagonist who had this amazing superhero life but dreamed of being a "normal teenage girl" who went to high school, went to parties/dances, dated boys, ect. was just *not* one I was going to be able to relate to. Luckily, there was plenty of sci-fi action and humor to keep me coming back, as well as some pretty likable characters (I was friends with all the "Brads" back then). Also, I hate to say it, but I really didn't like the show's art style (I've changed my stance on that, however, so don't @ me). I found it kind of ugly and didn't like the color palate. Now, I appreciate it a lot more for its unique retro style and understand what it was going for. And since I'm no longer fresh out of the pure Hell that was high school, that part of the show doesn't really bother me anymore. Despite the stuff that didn't work for me back then, I still enjoyed the show and watched it whenever it was on because there was a lot to like about it, far more than there was to dislike. Now it just makes me sad that, like Invader ZIM, Nick screwed this show over and didn't give it a proper chance to shine. Invader ZIM became my all-time favorite cartoon in spite of all the network meddling, and who knows? Maybe MLATR could be higher up on my list now if there had just been more episodes released and it hadn't gotten dumped on their other channel. It's definitely a show I didn't appreciate enough back then but look back on fondly now. Also like ZIM, MLATR seriously deserves the Netflix movie treatment.

If I was in these creators' shoes, I'd be pissed too. I know Nickelodeon executives has the final say to do what they want with their IPs but they should at least keep their employees informed. After all, it is their creators that keeps Nickelodeon a float; not just overly paid executives. In addition, some creators take their work at a personal level as if it was their own which they should do so as they dedicate their lives working for the network.

I don’t know why, but MLAATR feels like a 50’s comic book series adapted into a modernized television series. A lot of MLAATR has that 50’s vibe, like how Sci-Fi is depicted, the art style, the backgrounds, how cartoony it is, everything. With the exception though of some of the technology and music. The Wayside cartoon was kinda like that too except that it was actually adapted from a book, and no sci-Fi stuff.

There's some problems I have with this show, but I do still love it. Like you, I recognize how aggravating Sheldon's character is, and that really bitters the Christmas episode for me. No one but SHELDON expects that Jenny is being mind controlled, not even her own mother! Also, the episode "No Harmony In Melody" really hurts to watch. Brad finally finds love in a nice robot girl, but Jenny can't allow them to be happy, and falsely accuses Melody of being evil. It's probably well written, but hard to watch, because it just ends with Jenny ruining their happiness, and crushing Melody's spirit.

I know Rebecca Sugar said she based Peridot on an "Invader Zim" OC she created a long time ago, but Peridot's design (with her limb enhancers), plus her working on a "Cluster", gave me some serious "My Life As A Teenage Robot" vibes. In fact, a lot of Homeworld gave me those vibes. Can't help but feel it was a bit of an influence on her.

They did have a couple songs! In "Humiliation 101" Jenny and Brad break out into a Broadway styled showtune about horrible things happening to the school, and "Escape From Cluster Prime" features a 60's-esque bubblegum pop tune about how Jenny feels needed and appreciated as a hero in disguise. If you ask me though, the show could have used a couple more 😂

This manages to do with animation what The Cars did with music, it manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time. This shows whole style seems like a mix of 30s/40s American Cartoons and 60s/70s anime (AstroBoy most especially)

Yeah, this definitely was a great show. Funny that you're doing Danny Phantom next because Teenage Robot along with DP are proof Nick can really do superhero/comedy shows really well....Uh..Well do them well mostly. That animated Henry Danger show is probably due in this marathon and yeeeeah it's a disaster.

It's funny you bring up the music in this show. I watched a lot of shows with closed captioning and whoever did the CC on this show in particular needs a raise for how different and more detailed it was than other cartoons. Every sound effect had its own onomatopoeia, the music notification had better descriptions...I can't remember specifically anymore but it helped set the cartoon apart from the rest.
