My Lady Careys Dompe c. 1520 by Anonymous composer
Музыка
This piece of music is thought to be the earliest written music for Virginal or Harpsichord. This piece was written upon the death of Lady Carey's husband who was a courtier in the court of Henry the 8th. Lady Carey was the sister of Anne Boleyn. The music is performed by Linda Rogers on an Italian Virginal, built by her husband, Donald Rogers.

No one throws a funeral party quite like Henry VIII.

I guess, Henry VIII got to practice funeral parties on 4 out of 6 of his wives!
Wow, somehow I have never heard this before, and also what a wonderful instrument.
This is the right instrument to play this kind of music, delicious performance, beautiful background.

Strange....while listening to this early music, it also sounds like today's music with its repeating bass and improvise-like upper voices..like jazz too with the occasional chords. Richard

In the film ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ (1971) this is the very piece that then-Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I) was depicted as performing on a virginal in her ‘close-confin’d’ rooms in the Tow’r of London when being incarcerated by her half-sister (‘Bloody’) Mary Tudor after 17 March 1554… to keep her spirits up no doubt

Elizabeth played “very well, for a queen” apparently … good old Cobbett reversed the epithets applied to her and her half-sister Mary … “Good Queen Mary” and “Bloody Bess” … all the same, I think your playing is brilliant … thanks a lot!

Wonderful and weird piece; I never understood it's musical provenance, since it seems quite unlike anything else of the period, there is some prescient and minimalist in it. Thanks for the lovely performance!

Thank you for listening and for your lovely comment. As a pianist, you certainly would have an advantage for playing the harpsichord, as it is also a keyboard instrument. It does, however, have a completely different mechanism, as it plucks the string rather than hammers like a piano. It doesn’t have dynamics so the touch and technique are very different from piano. I hope you have an opportunity to play a harpsichord in the future. Thanks again.

There are kits for different types of harpsichords and virginal at Zuckermann Harpsichords in Connecticut. zhi.net You might join on Facebook, the group”harpsichords free, cheap and for sale to good homes. They show many instrument for sale and give knowledgeable advice for buyers. If your brother is handy, you might want to check out the instrument in RI. Working on regulating and repairing an existing instrument would be a good way to learn . Keep in mind that harpsichords do not stay in tune and must be tuned often, like a big guitar. Players tune their own instruments. I wish you luck and hope you find what you would like.

Ah Lady Carey! Poor lady came to such a gruesome end! But she stood up to the trend of the day and refused to change her faith and she prayed for the King Henry VIII. the Careys were long and beloved friends of the Tudors and those same betrayed their friendship for their own pleasure and mad devises!
Nice that they randomly decided to start writing the music down at this point.
Imagine teleporting whoever composed this piece to the middle of an Eddie Van Halen concert
ドメニコ・スカルラッティ、ヨハン・ゼバスティアン・バッハにこの鍵盤と音響システムを見せてあげたらなんという答えが返ってくるか聞いてみたいです🎵

They were very familiar with virginals and wrote for harpsichord. There is no sound system. This is an acoustic instrument. Thank you for listening
звучит ну очень актуально, и кажется с текстом на французском или немецком сейчас это мог бы быть отличный поп-трек. и забавно, что даже сбоку и со спины видно, как исполнительница кайфует 😎
What a nice little instrument. Sounds much more pleasant than a harpsichord. Fuller richer sound, not so "plinky."
So this is a Renaissance piece from the time of Henry VIII, he of 6 wives. It is not Early Music at all, but it is in a Dorian mode. It's lovely & worth a listen.
Now this is a good DUMP-EH

Thank you so much. I’m from NY but live now in Tennessee.
This was beautiful, and had a very marked rhythm. I don't think renaissance music gets the exposure that baroque gets.
One thing I learned, when as a music major, there are no new musical ideas. They recycle and combine existing ones over and over. As old as this little composition is, it sounds as if it could be part of a modern film score.
This one is more compact inn the front-back dimension than those I have previously seen pictures of, but nevertheless sounds good even though it doesn't seem to have much space for a sound board.
pretty
Lovely piece of early music and a lovely tone. Beautifully played. Is the box register glued to the underside of the soundboard? I think that kills the tone. I wonder if yours is different, it sounds so good.

Thank you for your kind words about my playing and the instrument. The box register is glued to the bottom of the soundboard. It took ALOT of time to regulate the instrument in order to get the best sound.

I’ve made a few virginals. My latest is using a thin upper register under the soundboard to see if the tone is better. The other problem is the bass keys are very short. No getting round that.

I have never, to my knowledge at least, have seen a harpsichord this small! I had no idea harpsichords were made thusly. Two octaves? Is this what was once called a "virginal?" As for the music, a very enjoyable piece to hear, and probably to play. And the composer is unknown? This predates Johann Sebastian Bach by more than a hundred years. Late Renaissance, perhaps? You might look into the music of Henry VIII. He was known to compose a small piece of music on occasion.

Thanks for listening. Yes, this is a virginal. It has 54 notes. Virginals are a type of harpsichord and were very popular in the 16 th Century.
Beauty lies in simplicity!
Wonderful looking and sounding instrument. What are the differences between this and a spinet?
@drogers447
Жыл бұрын
The difference between a virginal and a spinet is the orientation of the strings. On a virginal, the strings run sideways from the keyboard. On a spinet, the strings run at an angle. This makes for the difference in sound. ❤️
