I loved hearing your story, so inspiring. Especially, the part where you talked about God's timing. I've been wanting to get started with medical coding and hear how hard it is to get your foot in the door. But also, cant put this idea of pursuing coding to rest. I feel like God is ordering my steps and will open the right door at the right time. Thanks for this lil gem of a reminder of his faithfulness tucked in your story.

The difference between the 3 levels for my job: Coder I codes e&m levels only Coder II codes e&m, minor and major procedures, and surgeries. Coder III codes the same as Coder II’s but they are certified in the specialty that they code for. So, for me I’m a coder II right now but when I pass the COBGC coding certification for obstetrics and gynecology I’ll then be a coder III.

I learned ICD-9 at the time. Do you think I could get ICD-10 certified and go back and get my state certification? - without having to go back through the whole program again- like taking a coding course or something for ICD-10. I’m a single mom now and would like to try it again. Thank you. When you became employed did they provide you the books to code from? Also do you need all your coding books to take the exam?

If you already went through a program then all you really need to do is to take a refresher course (ICD-10). If you go back to that community college, you wouldn’t need to take the whole program again and they will tell you what you need to take.

When I studied for the CPC exam I didn’t have any study manuals just my coding books (CPT, HCPCS & ICD-10). All I did was practice exams and used the Rationales as my instructor for correct coding. Once I became a coder I had on the job training and I took a couple online courses through the AAPC website. You’re right! Some programs are expensive that’s why I like to do as much research as I can to educate myself.

I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for making it. My question is, what are the metrics that you have to meet? (how many claims to code per hour, this also includes for being a biller) Also, as a biller, how much are you on the phones? I just applied for a biller position but would like to become a coder. My background is mostly in disability case management for an insurance company, and I'm a little nervous about entering into the billing and coding sector.

Every employer is different and it depends on what you’re doing. Before I became an OBGYN coder I had to do 13 charges per hour. Now that I’m reviewing surgeries my metrics is 20 charges per hour. I’m not on the phones at all. The only communication I have is with my coworkers and manager via Microsoft Teams. Starting out as a billed I think is a good start because you’ll see a lot of the claims already coded. You can see errors that were made and learn from it. Good luck! 🤗💛

Let them know what you’re in school for and the career you want to pursue but you need to start somewhere. Omg!!! So amazing how you pop up and I was looking for a medical coding school. So when I graduated high school in 96 I decided I wanted to do school for X-ray for 2yrs. Well I became very ill for a year with my diabetes. After that year my mom ask if I was going to apply for X-ray school and I said nah I want to do medical assistant which was 9 months. Well I finish and nobody wanted to hire me because I had no experience… I started working through a staffing company and kept putting my resume out. Well this orthopedic company call me and ask if I would be interested in doing x-ray. I’m like I never did X-ray. I know this was God because they say they would train me… I’ve been with the company for 18 years, I never went to school for it because it’s full time and just didn’t fit my schedule. Well I always wanted to do medical coding but was told by others oh it’s hard this want be a great fit for you. So I would feel discouraged because I’m not the best with computers but once I’m trained I’m good at what I do. However I wanted to do something totally different in my company doing more admin work and would be working from home but my supervisor put a stop and wanted to keep me in X-ray because of shortage… so I’m in deep prayer I want to work from home trying to find a good school to apply for in August and was wondering do you have any suggestions. You really blessed me. Thanks for sharing!

Aww, that is amazing!! Your story is inspiring as well! Don’t get discouraged over the admin position you didn’t get and don’t see it as your manager blocking you from this opportunity. It could be God using him/her to prevent you from moving into that position because there is something bigger that he has for you!! Trust me I was turned down multiple times within my department and I was sad about it but I didn’t give up and I kept on going and literally everything worked out in the end and I got everything I asked for plus some!!! Yesss keep praying because he hears you! 🤗🤗💛☺️ In regards to schooling I’m not really sure which ones are the best ones because I haven’t searched for schools. I typically get training or courses through the AAPC online. If you rather attend a school for coding I’d research what’s available in your area or online. I hope you find something that’s suitable for you! Good luck and keep in touch! Also thank you for watching and supporting my channel! ❤️

It’ll be hard trying to balance the two little ones you have but people have done it.
