    Good question! Many different ways. I always tell people never forget your past experience, save it in your back pocket if needed to be used for later. I think in your case it depends on how much you want to get back in. Do you want to do both video and lab work, or do lab work 100%. I think deciding there will determine what you can hop back into. If anything I would start looking up part time technician jobs at labs you are interested in? Being a lab assist is great. I think hitting the internet and seeing what is out there that fits your schedule or wants!

As a manager I have had to ensure our tools and equipment is operating properly. I am glad you enjoyed it, thank you for the support! I do hope to make more videos in the immediate future. That is very exciting about starting soon in the field. You will be surprised how much your education will take you through this journey, even with no experience. You will learn so much very quickly! In terms of my work that I have done, my main focus was microbiology, agriculture and genetics. I had to do analysis on diffierent substrates, and genetic screenings of products that we would make. We would also delvelop new safe/clean production area processes, and data analyze organic compenents going into our products. My advice is to keep an open mind, and trust that your education was not a waste. College teaches you how to use your resources, and to be analytical. Always ask yourself why you are doing something, don't just do something to do it. You will understand the process so much better! And be safe! Always ask questions!

    Hello, thank you for this video. I have a question for u that I hope u can answer.. so basically while doing my master degree I started working a little in the lab for my thesis and then I discovered that I tend to have shaky hands while doing simple tasks, especially when the lab manager is looking at me.. this really paralyzed me and is now being my nightmare and I'm scared now to apply for any other master or PhD :( My hands don't shake in basic life tasks even if i'm doing it in front of people, it's just in the lab :() Do you think that it might be just the lack of experience? And that I can go over it? (Sorry for my English I'm not a native)

  • @brontefletcher23

    @brontefletcher23

    3 жыл бұрын

    Your English is pretty good, I understood just fine! Thank you for the comment as well. I will give you my advice for what worked for me, and has helped me in the past. First easy solutions are watching the caffeinated beverages or medications that you might be on that could cause shaking. Not everyone has this, but I like to say it just in case. As for shaking during procedures in the lab, I personally feel its a combination between the experience you have doing something and your mind being nervous. As we say "psyching yourself out" basically means you are worried and thinking too much about it. Practice and gaining confidence in doing skills make you less nervous. In the beginning when I was a student, I always had nerves when I was training with other professionals. Over time doing the techniques over and over again, I was more confident in myself, and less worried about how else saw me doing it. When you learn a new procedure, you are worried about every little step, instead of doing the constant motion at first. Reading it in a book is not the same then actually doing the procedure itself. What helps me is watching the procedure done by someone else, or on video, then practicing it. Now being a scientist I am less nervous doing it in front of people because I know they aren't grading me. What has helped me the most is telling myself "everyone has to be watched at some point, even your teachers and other scientists when they were young". They had to be graded and watched too to make sure they were doing the procedure correct. It happens with everyone!

    I know that I had shaky hands when I first started in a lab. If your hands are really shaky where you can’t micropipette, try to stabilize it with your other hand using a finger. Then once your more comfortable you, begin to just do it with accuracy. My research professor in college showed me that, and it works crazy well.

    Ugh... I am experiencing this too. It super sucks especially when ure working with a harsh/strict supervisor and they get mad because I am nervous which ends up making me more nervous and tremor/shaking. I also find myself more relaxed when I get night duty where there are not too many people watching. I don't think I already get over it, but if I can give u some advice it's super normal to get nervous over something new to it. And if u happen to have an unsupportive spv like me (instead encourage me to keep trying, she's blabbering to everyone abt how incompetent I am) just let her be! Our job is already stressful enough to overthink abt everything. Cheer up!

    2 жыл бұрын

    First you need to find labs that you are interested in, and once you do reach out. Let them know what you are looking for or ask if they offer any opportunities such as interning. For me in the hiring process I look for work ethic, communication skills, and team willingness. I also like to have them express their strengths and explain to me how this would bring value to the lab. Most of my technicians began as interns, and are in college, but they bring such a different variety to the team. Again not every hiring manager and lab are the same, but I always like to remind those to highlight their qualities that they think make them unique.

    I work in a large outpatient clinic. Sometimes when we are short on phlebotomist or there are a lot of patients on our schedule, techs draw blood to help get thru the rush. Then we go back to our benches and catch up on work.
