It's something I really enjoy doing but I've never had an interest in anything sciency but nowdays chemistry just makes me happy and content. I love your vlog it gave me good insight on what chemistry is really like in college. If my chem mark is good enough I'll probably consider taking chemistry next year. I'm kind of scared to take chemistry because I heard its really stressful and hard but I wanna do it in way which is not stressful and have fun with it. Your vlog made me less stressed about it tho

Chemistry isn’t just about memorising but you also need fo understand the material in order to do well. The main thing I would say is don’t be afraid to ask questions and dedicate a lot of time to studying! Good luck 🤩

It all depends on your final career goals. If you are very interested in research and would like to pursue a career in research then a PhD would be very useful. Also to stay in academia and become a professor you need a PhD. You need to first figure out what your career goals are and then see if a PhD is a requirement to reach your goals or not. Love this content :D I notice you de-gass your solvent before placing it in the solvent bottle for the HPLC, doesn't the action of pouring it in the solvent bottle "re-gas" it? I tend to not de-gas solvents for HPLC since there is an in-line de-gasser in most modern systems and I assumed that was sufficient? I still de-gas my buffers (Biochemist) since they get a huge amount of dissolved gases in them while making them. I'm a noob to HPLC, it's not something we use a lot in Biochem, just trying to learn here.

Thank you! That’s a good question - this is the way I was taught at my current lab but when I worked in Pharma we prepared the mobile phase in the bottle, de gassed it and then connected that bottle directly to the HPLC but I’m not sure if there was a reason for that. I’m also not aware if our systems have an in-line degasser but it’s something I’ll definitely check out! Thanks for suggestions and comment!

yeah this doesnt really do anything in terms of gas content, but it swaps air with the gas that she is bubbling into it. if you want to get all the gas out, you either need to put the solvent under a vacuum (not advised, since it can evaporate easily and also freeze) or use an ultrasonic bath

No regrets :) I really love to learn so I’ve enjoyed these past few years of growing as a researcher. It’s so difficult to know what you want to do in the future but if you enjoy chemistry then it’s a good degree choice as you know you’ll get yourself through it. If you decide after your degree that you don’t want to do a chemistry related job then that’s okay! A chemistry degree is a highly respected degree as you learn problem solving and analytical skills so many companies would still want to hire you, even for non chemistry related jobs! I hope this helps :)

@@drjessicagomezb Your comment helped very much! Way more helpful than r/Chemistry on Reddit. I'm transferring from community college to a 4-year university as a junior so I've only experienced lower division chemistry courses + prerequisites for the major. I really only see myself majoring in art or a physical science because I very much enjoy learning about both--only recently I've decided to minor in art and major in chemistry even though I know I might struggle and I'm feeling doubt whether it will work out. I really do enjoy watching chemists work on KZread, so I think that's a good sign.Thank you again for the advice!

Doing a PhD opens opportunities for research related jobs which you would not be qualified for with only an undergraduate or masters degree. As for high paying jobs, with a chemistry PhD I’m unsure which high paying jobs you can jump straight into after finishing

Hi! Congrats on completing your masters :) for a PhD it’s best if you treat it like a 9-5 job but that does not mean you have to work from 9-5. Working hours are typically flexible(if you agree with your supervisor) but for a lab based PhD you would be expected to spend most days in the lab. A PhD is basically like a normal 40 hour a week job but with more flexibility. Sometimes you will need to come in early or go home late, it all depends

Hello ☺️ at the moment I am spending one full day per week doing writing and computer based tasks only, so this allows me to start writing bits of my thesis. I would write the paper while I was waiting for experiments to finish and whenever I didn’t have so many things to do in the lab. I hope this helps!

Hi! A PhD makes you a highly skilled researcher so a career in research in industry or academia. Becoming a lecturer requires a PhD also. I would say that conducting a PhD is best if you would like to pursue a career in research or academia or a career related to academia.

@Kat-cs9zu I would say just think carefully about what your long term career goals are before pursuing a PhD to see if you strictly need one for that career. It’s a long time to spend doing research to then not use the phd afterwards!
