Anna Karenina with Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean is the best version.Cast is spot on considering that women used to marry around 18 at the time and the fact that Anna has a young son...(the BBC version just doesn't make any sense, whatsoever,as men married much later at the time which puts Vronsky and Anna at the same age range). This movie makes me think about the responsibility of love.Vronsky saves her from a loveless marriage to then kill her with his selfish focus on his career ,his deliberate ignorance and coldhearted attitude to her pain as his mother sets him up with society women and he goes along with it(she would just have to accept that he wasn't really cheating).Meanwhile Anna gave up everything for him to be left isolated with him her sole company...and yet he never takes responsibility for her ,he never makes any sacrifices for her. This is where her downfall starts while Vronsky just watches even argues with her that her feelings are wrong. Can you imagine your husband going on dates with other women set up by your mother in law while you sit at home and watch...wait for him to come home!!!???Torture of the worst kind,i'd say.It is not surprising that she turns to drugs ,anything to help her cope.Meanwhile Vronsky refuses to take responsibility for her love for him.Why is he even shocked to find she commited suicide???He tells Levin that he wants to remember her as she was, shocked at the train battered corpse he had to find...when he pushed her closer to the tracks every time she cried and yelled as he refused to acknowledge her pain and instead put his ambitions and society above her.Vronsky just cared about Vronsky and pays a bitter price for itas he refused to take responsibility for love.I wonder if he realized that his ignorance and selfishness did not only kill Anna but was about to kill him as well as he leaves for the frontline with the hope that a bullet might relieve him of his pain at her loss.

Well. Vronsky did give up his comission as an officer to be with her, thus deserting his career, which is a major set-back for him at the time. He also submits himself into the gossip of living in adultery with a married woman something that is equally socially disturbing for him, as it is for her. The loveless marriage is bound, since Karenin should never marry a woman less than half his age, Anna should never marry a man that by definition would never have been able to give her the passion and the affection her age dictates, and thus, all her love and affection is centered on her son, until Vronsky pursues her, something I doubt happened before as she married in such a tender age. This is a whole set of mistakes, that led to a conclusion that couldn't possibly end up well; There is a child and the un-divided devotion of the mother. There is a husband who's honor has been wounded, and is vindictive against the adulterers - setting aside of course his age, his own mistakes, his inability to satisfy hiw wife's needs both physically and psycheologically - and another man WHO's love has been crushed by society, an indifferent mother that seeks to make up her son's life ignoring for the sake of her social status, his pain and desires as Anna's. Vronsky cannot possibly feel or sympathize with Anna's yearning for her child; his own is lost. Fatherhood doesn't work that way at all especially since her son is not a child young enough to be dependant to his mother for life (an infant) which would evoke different feelings in him, as an extension of his love to her. Plus, he has to move (as a man) in a Society that laughs behind his back, but accepts him just because he is of the right SEX, while Anna is staying back, secluded in shame (even her friend decides to visit with her, but does not permit her to come to her House because she 'is raising daughters'). Horridly her son is told that his mother is dead - foreshadowing maybe?- by a wretch who is similar age with her husband and thus mentally matching, and just as vindictive. So we have three facts: Anna does not get the divorce to have Vronsky as a husband, and will never have her son, since Karenin - vindictive as he is - keeps the child away from her, to hurt her for what she dared do despite he does not appear particularly affectionate towards his son. He doesn't do anything drastic against her, as an insulted man would do, he even appears reluctant to hurt Vronsky despite he sets himself at his total disposal. That doesn't work well with female psycheology of a hunter-keeper man, thus Karenin, becomes from the cheated poor husband to a ridiculed coward old man, that chooses to use dirty weapons against the love affair instead of facing it with dignity, including the exploit of his own son that thinks his mother dead. The scene where Vronsky carries Anna out of the mansion in his arms, (where is Karenin? Really!!!) down that staicase and under the shocked faces (watch their faces) of the household personnel says it all; It's as beautiful to watch as heartbreaking, as the viewer, having not read the book, feels that something vital is amiss. The decadence is expected, the pain ensuing is justified; Love's Labour lost? I'd love to have an account on Karenin's feelings after Anna's death. This is the best version by far, not only because Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean share an uncunny chemistry, but also because they respresent the ultimate beauty that hide so much hypocrisy and pain, under the Social veil of the time. Definitely the best version, ever.

Anna Karenina is the perfect dilemma: what is more important, loyalty to husband and child, or personal fulfillment in love but destruction of social life and hurting the child and husband. is it OK for society to consider marriage/family more important or the happiness of the individual? Never ending story!

I am tempted to say that Vronsky was the luckiest guy and Anna may have been the unluckiest woman. But on the end: We are the luckiest for Tolstoy writing the story...and we see this cut! Talking about luck: Sophie was lucky to get this role and the fim was lucky to have her!

It is difficult to blame anyone, he was definitely not selfish - at the end of the book the suicidal Vronsky joins a group of Russian volunteers and depart from Russia to fight in the Orthodox Serbian revolt that has broken out against the Turks. He is not going to come back from the war.

Piękne i wzruszające. .

Thanks Card..I'm asking because I was watching a movie here in italian (which I do not know) and he met with some young lady (in some theatre) and then Anna looked out of the window and saw him talking with some young lady in the carriage. She sacrified everything for him-she must have been really desperate at the end.
