I 100% agree that Thomas being older than Gordon and Henry is just wrong.

My Ideals Thomas Wordswell:LNER J72 built in 1914 at Darlington:Arrived in 1922 Gordon Gresley:LNER A1 No.4471 built in 1922:Arrived in 1922

In my au Thomas is a NWR Custom Engine built in 1918 and He got his branch Line in 1925,he was forced on the branch because the previous engine was way too old.due to this he was very inexperienced and was cocky and clumsy and had to be taken back to shunting but after A few trails and James’s crash he got the branch line back and gained Annie and Clarabel. Thus becoming the Thomas we all know and love.

I love how you fixed the strange age gap between Thomas and Gordon, and making Thomas a completely custom engine fits really well!! I have a theory on the age gap tho. Engines aren't like humans, there's no puberty or aging. Little engines are portrayed as enthusiastic and cheerful while big engines are more reserved and dignified. I guess its up to the engine whether they want to mature or not. Long story short Thomas chooses to be cheeky and Gordon chooses to be temperamental.

I've always said "Thomas is a modified E2 built much later", and well it's either that or you look crazy by explaining why a certain class of locomotive is Thomas. In other words, you did Thomas really good.

My headcanon for thomas: he was built in 1918 by the GNR for the NWR, but hes built was stopped because of the future construction of great northern but was finished in 1921 and sent to the NWR and was renumbered 371 and helped in tidmouth station pilot until 1926 when he rescued james and was rebuilt with a flat running board and now runs the ffharqhar branch My headcanon for gordon: he was the first number 1471 built in 1922 first named great northern II but he was renamed to sir robert fredrick the same year he was loaned to sodor but later bough in 1923 and repainted in NWR Royal blue and renumbered 374 but kep this old shape until 1942 after the war he was sent to the LNER to be rebuilt into a Thompson A2 but later damaged and rebuild into a gresley A3 with a gresley 3 silinder and a Thompson A2 boiler and still servives on the express

My ideal thomas: So while i have no problem thomas being an LBSCR E2 i do have one problem in paticular its not the design but its when they were built i personally dont like the idea of him being older than henry and gordon so since my ideal crovans gate works wasn't built until 1924 my solution would be in 1920 after the railway was completed sir gordon topham hatt the first (my ideal fat director) and the railways chairman lord harwick reached out to the London Brighton & South Coast Railway's CMB Lawson Butzkopfs Billinton to ask if he could build them an 0-6-0 tank engine and so they set to work and in 1922 the build was complete and the engine was sent to sodor and named Thomas Billinton with his first name coming from a sudrian priest and the last name after the man who built him.He would spend most of his early years shunting trains in the Vicarstown and tidmouth yards for the bigger engines which he hated.What made this worse was most of the other bigger engines would pick on him such as No 1470 great northern who was also known as No 304 gordon topham hatt (my ideal gordon).Another engine was No 305 james jones (my ideal james) who was almost as bad as gordon.He would boast to thomas that he was "the most splendid engine on all sodor" and would say "there will never be an engine as important,grand and splendid as me".But as bad as gordon and james was non of them could comapre to the most arrogant,selfish and vicious engine of them all No 87546 Albert Regaby.While he would do most of the same things gordon and james would do but would as well as that he would say "you and that old iron edward will never have the strength and power as an engine like me".This would severaly anger thomas and would he would usually lash out but soon learnt from edward "dont give him the attention he wants,it will,just make things worse" he would soon realised the wise engine was right and carried on with his work.However,in 1924 after james had his accident he was rewarded his branchline and a few days before that the works had been built and thomas and james were the first ones to be repainted.Thomas was repainted into NWR royal blue with white lining and james was repainted into red with royal blue lining.Then,a few months later after the S&M railway engines retired and decided to work on a heritage line and the NWR needed an engine to work the line and after his bravery and good work in the yards Thomas finally got the chance he deserved.A grand ceremony was held for Thomas and as he left Tidmouth station a crowd of cheers and whistles could be heard.And the rest as we say,is history.....

I definitly think that Thomas can work as a one off, though I think him being built by the NWR just seems like an excuse for him to look the way he does. If I were to be honest, I like to imagine Thomas as the LBSCR E2x, basically what the E1x is but for the E2s, built in 1929. I won't say more about my headcannon but I do still like yours, it kind of reminds me of Fire Porter's AU. As for Gordon, I think I agree with you on him being the prototype, though I think him being Great Northern doesn't solve the problem either. But it's your headcannon so who am I to judge.

My ideal Gordon in the TVS is still the same in the Railway series but the thing I’m gonna change is in one episode *Tender Engines* where Gordon sees a visitor that looks like flying Scotsman. I’m gonna swap Scotsman out with Bittern with two tenders hence fixing the issue of Gordon’s kinship with Scott.

tbh I rather keep histories of locomotives designs and details the same just so it alines instead of altering it for the sake of justification.

My ideal Thomas is he is an Lms jinty built in 1925 he was numberd 57001 when he came to sodor and My ideal Gordon is the gnr A1 4471 sir Frederick Banbury but later renamed Gordon when he came to sodor he was numberd 57004 when the a1s were rebuilt into an a3 gordon got a corridor Tender smoke deflectors and a supheated boiler

My ideal Thomas would be basicaly the lbscr "attempt" to compete with the Metropolitan tank engines (aka fix the issue that the e2 have with local passenger) thus his small appearance was made, so he could cost along the coast line, his side tank would still be extended for longer runs instead for the unquenchable thirst the e2 had and would be much shorter (but not as short as the tvs) unfortunatly due to time and lack of money the lbscr scrapped the plans, only being able to make thomas, this put thomas is an ugly duckling type of situation, that would end with thomas running away and finding himself in sodor, As for gordon i would still keep him the first and put great northern as the second( similar situation to new born twins) with gordon being bought by the NWR while great northern remained on the lner, during the war effort the two twins where rebuilt, altough gordon was parcially rebuild by stanier whom gave him a set of waelchester's valve gear while great northern was rebuilt into the A1/1 by Thompson because of the engine's wear and tear throughout it's service.

I have two headcanons for thomas the blue bean. A J50, and your headcanon with a front and rear footplate dip.

My ideal thomas is that he is a fr g5 but modify like a e2 he was painted maroon and in 1925 he was sent to sodor and after that he was repaint to dark blue and black Linnigs and he was nuber 1031 he was name thomas toby since after his crash to the staiton master house he was repair and after dieselasation he would be still pulling anie and clarlalabel and with his firneds nuber 1062 percy washington and toby brandon wich hes number 7098 and my ideal gordon is he is a a1 number 1473 And after he was sent to sodor he was name gordon gresley after his builder sir nigel gresley and in 1933 he recives smoke defelctor and after in 1950 he was renumber to number 4051 and after that he was sent to pull express to this day

(I don’t really remember too much of that post, tho if it could be said user believed that Great Northern is Gordon since Great Northern is the real life, and Gordon is the experimental prototype stated by Awdry).

According to the IOS Book it said Gordon was the experimental prototype but doesn’t mention him as Great Northern. So in canon him being Great Northern isn’t canon in Awdry’s universe and in his books. However Gordon had to be great northern if he’s the prototype of the LNER gresley A1 class

I wouldn’t say Thomas is an E2, in my universe he would classified as an S4 by the NWR, and I wouldn’t the extended side tanks are an E2 trait. As for his running board, the problem I always had was both running board from the front and rear are uneven and I don’t think a competent company like the NWR would make an engines design uneven.
