8 Steps to Building Wealth: At the Same Time: 1: Get a good education that leads to a good paying job. 2: Create a budget in an Excel spreadsheet. Earnings should be greater than spending. 3: Start an emergency savings account. Put in $100. Add to the account each month, until you have 12 months income in savings. 4: Pay down debt, starting with the highest interest rate debt first. 5: Invest 10% of income into a retirement fund, (401k, 403b, traditional IRA, Roth IRA). 6: Save for college in a 529 account. Add to it each month. 7: Invest in a low fee mutual fund. Add to it each month. 8: Diversify assets.

My ex did this to me as well. I had health difficulties after giving birth and stupidly trusted him to pay all the bills. Ended up wiping my account and his account clean. Then he went to prison for drugs! Left him for good and never looked back. Almost 5 years later and I'm just now rebuilding my life and that of my son after paying off all the debts he left me with! I hope to be able to purchase a home in 1 to 2 years from now 🙌 My only debt is a car that is almost paid off!

It doesn’t add up .. someone could’ve been making fraudulent transactions or anything.. even if it’s money that “she know is there,” why not check in on the account just to make sure nothing is fishy with it? @@rosegold973 Statements are easy to forge - that's one way. You wouldn't even have to recreate the statement , just a few minor "edits" - I'm not going to post the way to do it, because I think that would be irresponsible of me - let's just say it's an old school method used by marketing and ad agencies (my former profession). All this guy would have had to do was collect the mail, then manipulate the statements. It isn't difficult. Now, I have no idea if he did that - but that's certainly one way to easily do it. If you've never dealt with a covert narcissist - you have no idea how convincing they can be. Remember how much Bernie Maddoff stole and who he stole from? What did he do? He created false statements - his clients had no idea. Let's not victim blame, please. This woman is in a bad enough place, and headed for more heartache - let's not increase her pain. She seems rather optimistic about this I'm not sure she understands how difficult this is going to be. I've been in this similar situation with opiates. His behavior is not going to change unless he wants it to change. he is going to be addicted to drugs for the rest of his life whether he takes them again or not. He is going to struggle with this issue and he could easily go back to drugs at any time. However it is possible to change and make your life better. If he is addicted to opiates I suggest medication assisted rehabilitation such as the use of buprenorphine/Subutex and gradually wean himself off under the guidance of a doctor. Recovery is possible so I hope that things get better for them.

This has clearly been going on for a couple years if he has accounts 6 months in collections. She sounds super square and naive, like this might even be her first brush with addiction. Yes we do recover but also there are so many active user con artists out there. He concealed well from her for a long time and knows how to exploit her blind spots. If she wants to stick it out with him, they need serious marriage counseling plus ongoing separate counseling, AND husband needs to be taken off every single financial account for the indeterminate future. Wifey should be pulling credit reports every 3 months to make sure nothing shady is happening. It would take me a few years, if ever, to forgive on this magnitude, because I know how sneaky addicts are.

For those wondering how she couldn't have known...statements are easy to forge. If he made sure to get the mail first, then he could have easily created false statements - using old statements that show a 30k balance - it's an old school "cut and paste" method that was used by marketing and ad agencies. And...as far as his credit cards - using a PO Box as his address would keep those bills out of her sight. Let's not victim blame, please. The only way to truly know - is to call the bank and verify the funds - disregard the statement. And, run a credit check on your spouse. This is something she'll have to do the rest of her life, if she stays married to him. She's in for a long road, because I'd bet my retirement, he's doing a lot more than drugs:/

You might be surprised just how high functioning many addicts are, especially in the earlier stages and it can happen to the best of us. A lot can depend on the substance, the company people keep and how disciplined they are overall. A lot of bigger companies will hold your job for you when you're going through something like this. Granted they won't hold your job forever but they will at least try to help you. I'm dealing with a similar situation and have seen it in others over the past 3 to 5 years. A lot of people doing these types of drugs are able to function for a long time under the radar. Now that it has happened to me and my kids directly it will never happen again. I know all the signs and will be able to see them coming from 100 miles away.

If I had been left to fend for myself by my family I would have never made it, and I had to go to rehab multiple times in order to finally want to change myself. You can’t just give up on people right away, I now have the ability to start to give back to them and repay them for what they helped me through and the experiences of drug addiction have shaped how compassionate I am towards others. Some of the most successful, inspiring people are former addicts, and not a single one of them did it on their own because they at least had the help of their higher power.
