Hands down the cheapest and most effective retinoid is The Ordinary’s 0.2% retinal emulsion. It’s potent, non-irritating, even for those new to retinoids, and after using daily for a few months will completely transform your face. Trust me. I’m 45 and now look like I’m 30 and I’m loving it (and all the attention ;) 😘

I have sensitive combination skin and my gateway retinoid recommendations for someone absolutely new to retinoids are two Korean skincare products that I absolutely loved as I began my retinoid journey. 1) Beauty of Joseon Retinal Eye Serum (0.02% Retinaldehyde). 2) By Wish Trend A-mazing Bakuchiol Night Cream (0.03% Retinal + Bakuchiol). I am currently using the By Wishtrend product for my under eyes and neck. LOVE it. For face, I moved from one tube of Naturium 0.05% Retinal to Naturium 0.1% Retinal to now 0.15% Youth to The People Retinal+Niacinamide Serum. They are all FANTASTIC products. I'd just recommend anyone starting off to go slow and let your skin get used to a strength before moving up. :)

This video really is a treasure trove of info! I’ve been using red light therapy from a panel by Future Form Official, recommended by my dermatologist, and it’s done wonders for my skin. My fine lines are reduced, and my complexion is brighter and smoother. The panel is affordably priced, which is a huge plus. There are lots of scientific papers backing red light therapy too. Thanks for all the great information in this video - it’s helped me make better skincare choices!

Had a look and I have to say if I’m going for a red light device to treat facial and neck aging I’d spend less than what these panels cost and be more comfortable using it by purchasing one of the well documented flexible red lite therapy masks available. I’m still waiting for the day when all these devices aren’t overpriced because of hype and demand and instead more fairly priced for what they actually are..LED lights 🙄

I’m on a tight budget, so I’ve been alternating between the ISNTREE Hyper Retinol EX 1.0 Serum ($15) and the two retinoids from Good Molecules (the gentle Retinol Cream for $8 and the 1% retinol night oil for $12). I’ll have to give the Stratia one a try one day. I guess the good thing about having sensitive skin is that I don’t have to splurge for the heavy hitting Tretinoin.

I am still using my Stratia and SkinMedica on the other days, or on my neck which is more sensitive. I also purchased Avene’s retrinal, but have not had the chance to use it, as I overestimated how long it takes to use these products up when you only use a pea sized amount. I moved up in strength very slowly, and aside from some light peeling occasionally, no real side effects.

I appreciate all the info, is there a difference for men when it comes to retinoids? I’m now consistent with moisturizer so maybe I could dabble into these. I think it would be nice if you showed a proper way to apply these things, some of us only know how to violently rub against our skin lol, also moisturizers and such come in such tiny bottles that I have to believe you’re not supposed to use as much as lotion or you’ll get two uses out of them. Great vid doc!

Hi Dr. Sam, great video… thanks! I still don’t have clear however if Adapalene is mainly to treat acne, or if it is actually effective to treat skin aging concerns. Thanks!

Curious about Adapalene for just anti-aging, of course assuming tolerance. But always, because it was approved/tested for acne, we hear “best for acne” of course. Is it a good product for all the anti-aging benefits of retinoids?

There’s less clinical evidence for anti-aging though in theory it could help. Anecdotally, it does help some if you can tolerate it.

I’ve been using Tretinoin 0.05 since October 2023 6 nights a week. One night a week I use Cerave Treatment glycolic and lactic acid. I use Medik8 retinal 3 eye cream $85 and I have purchased the 6 strength $109 to use once I finish the 3. With Tretinoin I have noticed it has brought out dark sun spots from beneath the skin so hopefully they fade, I use Aloha Arbutin and Tranexamic acid in the morning. I’m 48 and noticed my first eye line wrinkle. So I hope the Medik8 helps. I use Tretinoin on the orbital bone under the eye where the line is, haven’t put Tretinoin up close to eye as I get dry eye. Here in Australia we have to buy Medik8 online.

I recently started looking for retinols, largely due to your channel 🙂 I have dry, relatively sensitive skin so I tried the Jamieson ProVitamin A Retinol Night Cream, retinyl palmitate in the ingredients. I've only been using it a couple of weeks so it's much too early to tell, but I'm curious if anyone else has tried this product. I really like the texture of the cream and it seems to be a good moisturizer if nothing else.

Hi Dr. Sam! I've always wanted to try the cerave one but it's not available where I live. Here we have this brand that's quite famous and people seem to like their retinol, but I was curious, based on the composition alone, what do you think? It seems like there's so much going on but also, all I want to do is treat some acne red marks I have on my chin, nothing else, so the composition looks kinda crazy but good at the same time 🤣 Should I give it a go or maybe try another one? Aqua, Retinol, Alpha arbutin, Butylene Glycol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Sodium hyaluronate, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Glycerin, Linoleic Acid, Lecithin, Linolenic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Azelamidopropyl Dimethyl Amine, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12, Hydroxyethylcellulose ,Phloretin, Tocopherol, Ferulic Acid, BHA, BHT, Ethoxydiglycol , Disodium EDTA, Bisabolol, Polysorbate 80, Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Poloxamer 407, Ethylhexylglycerin
