    Great content! I'm not a reenactor,, but I love the same era of history. I hunt with and carry handguns and blades from the percussion period. Good point about life without flashlights and headlamps. Many innovative pioneers must have fabricated a hand torch from their camp fire. For the Walker, I attach a Nebo pen light to my barrel/loading lever with electrical tape with a quick release tab. Not period correct, but it handles recoil and fits in my holster as well. Looking forward to your hunting videos.

    I don't know if this helps but you should know that the first production sewing machines were made in the 1830's. Some goods were being shipped in machine sewn sacs by the late 1840's and anyone in shipping (like a packer) would have saved the bags at any opportunity both for the cloth and for use as a container.

    I recently came upon your channel and greatly appreciate the content! You've been an inspiration to get back out there and live the good life. On another note, if you haven't read it already, the book "Woodcraft" by Nessmuk provides an excellent firsthand description on making and using 1880's (and earlier) clothing, tinware, and other tools in addition to traditional camping, hunting and cooking tips. Have a great evening, and thanks for the fantastic videos.

    Hello Richard, I have a few questions for you... 1) lighing : wouldn't they carry an oil lantern? it existed at that time/period? I understand it's bulky and heavy, but with horses... 2) ground cloth : I find it difficult to go directly on the ground with only the blankets due to humidity accumulation. Is a ground cloth period correct? 3) salt : was salt carried in a small cotton/linen bag or small glass bottle to protect from humidity? What kind of salt were they using, sea salt (very fine) or rock salt (rough grains)? Your videos are just great 👍 keep them coming 🙏

  • @OverOnTheWildSide

    @OverOnTheWildSide

    2 жыл бұрын

    Those are good questions and I wish I had the answers... Unfortunately I rarely run across any detail as to what an individual carried for their overnights in the wild. I would like to get an oil lamp eventually and an oil container because as you said, they’re accurate to the time. It’s the same with a ground cloth. I have only seen pictures of wedge tents for small tents. I don’t know if they carried ground clothes or not. I believe in the CW it was common to put their gum blanket/poncho on the ground first. And same with salt. There’s definitely multiple ways to carry it. I haven’t had a problem using a poke sack and it can’t break so I like it. Maybe I’ll get another “store-bought” type container eventually just to show other methods. Do you have any thoughts on those questions?

    @@OverOnTheWildSide unfortunatly I have no answers. I take a small UCO candle lantern with spare candle (not period correct), sea salt in a bottle/cork and a 3ftx7ft oilcloth to sit/sleep on... I am looking for a larger gum blanket now, something like 5ftx7ft (that will add up wait also)

    I'd be interested in a video about your neck scarves. I hunt in the desert in Arizona and a bandana is a great accessory. I wet them with just a bit of water every hour or so and they really help keep me cool. However, I think most bandanas are just a bit too small and yours are a little bigger. Do you just rip off a square of fabric? Do you hem the edges? Stuff like that. Thanks for making the really interesting videos!

    That’s the first question I’ve received on my scarves. I got lucky with my red, cotton scarf. I wish I could replace it. The others are mostly just silk wild rags that I’ve purchased.
