Correction: Overhaul's theme was played in ep65 during his meeting with the league of villains. Other than that, I 100% agree with how bad the music placements are. Yuki Hayashi made tracks with names that corresponds directly to a scene or characters, yet they think "yeah, that Katsuki and Izuku track should be played when the Big 3 walks into a room" or "We love US of Smash theme, let's overuse it"

Before people start shitting on Bones for the less than stellar adaptation of S5 of MHA, let me preface this by saying this, its not their fault. The ones people should be angry at, are the production committee and their incessant need for an MHA movie every year. Due to this very reason the actual adaption suffers as animators and resources are moved away from the TV show towards the movies. And to top that off, Bones may have gotten tired of adapting MHA. What many fans don't realize, that MHA is an oddity in Bones' line up of shows. They as a studio are attracted towards projects that give their animators a reason to flex, and now you have a long running show with dwindling recourses and that paints a very clear picture, the production committee is taking almost all creative control from a studio made with the very foundation of creative control.

@@SakugaObscurious first I'd like to apologize for my bad English, it's not my native language. I agree with you that the production committee is at fault for quality dips in certain seasons of MHA like s3-4 and also taking away certain animators that would otherwise be on the show but the resources and staff for the movie and series are almost completely separate. MHA was also taken up by bones because it was rather popular so it would allow the studio to get quite a bit of funds. Bones is one of those studios where if their president finds a show interesting he'll provide most of the funds for it. Like mob psycho, josee the tiger and the fish and even the upcoming supercrooks.

@@OneAndOnlyWanted Very true, but Bones was founded by the pure principle of making shows that will let its animators run wild. In a interview Nakamura once mentioned that Bones president Masahiro Minami, heavily encourages the staff to always try something new. The only reason why I can think MHA was taken by Bones was to get more funding for shows they want to make, aka originals or passion projects like Mob Psycho. Now that the the production committee is getting more handsy when it comes to schedule and resources, I cant help but think that the priority has shifted. Heck, we might have the AOT situation where, Bones might not come back for another season.

Sometimes the anime really fucks up Bakugou's character, they love to use his anger as a gag, which I know Horikoshi did himself, but they really exaggerate those scenes and others, making him look a wild animal or something. @@jimjam8246 Yeah the manga, now that he's focused on change, uses his outburst as more of a gag and it even seems like the anime doesn't want his character to change. He's still explosive in the manga since quirks might as well be personalities but some examples would be: - In S3 after he and Deku fight, HEs the one that initiated the conversation about shoot style and how Deku can improve it, in the anime Deku asks and Bakugo is silent but then relents and gives advice - In the Joint Training when he tells Deku not to compliment him, its an endearing gag in the manga because he's literally chewing at Dekus speech bubble, in the anime he comes off as the same prick - After his team beats Class B and Deku congratulates him, he tells him to move out of reflex (it says so), in the anime he just comes off as a prick that still hates the guy -I also think after his Class B match he told Deku not to fall behind before Dekus match but the anime was just ramblings about being stronger and stronger. Of course, maybe it was a translation ting when I read the manga Bakugo is a treat for me in the manga because even though he's over the top you know he's out to do some good in his own weird outbursty way...in the anime he's kinda cringe except for when they get to those defining character moments and then he's cringe again for a gag, its weird lol.

The problem for me was that there was no need for JT to be more than 6 or 7 seven episodes. For an arc that is almost exclusively action, the anime should have vastly improved the pacing, but it did the complete opposite. Fights 3 and 4 had great pacing, 5 was ok, but 1 and 2 were abysmal. I think I'm probably in the minority of people who thoroughly enjoyed JT in the manga, despite it's pacing problems, but it did not need or frankly deserve 11 or 12 episodes. And then we have MVA. I have no idea what they're doing or why they thought it was a good idea. Switching MVA and EA is perfectly fine, maybe even better for the anime, but it is baffling to me that they would pre-emptively spoil so many parts of MVA and seemingly attempt to ruin what made the arc so amazing.

I do not blame the animators. I blame the executive producers. S5 would have looked great if it wasn't for that stupid third film. More importantly, we could have gotten MVA academia sooner, but because they had to change the order of the story arcs to tie into the film, fans will have to wait longer to see Tomura kick ass. From a narrative point of view this is very annoying, because by adapting Endeavor agency first, it spoils certain moments in MVA. A member of the league almost died during the fight with the MLA, but because The current arc was adapted first, their fate will be less impactful because we know they survived. All this because the executives got greedy and wanted a third film. Now they have pissed off manga fans and will probably confuse a few anime only fans as well.

My biggest gripe with the animation is in how fights are handled. Compare the sakuga from Naruto to that of MHA for example. MHA focuses heavily on big epic colorful one punch attacks, but has very little focus on any fast paced hand to hand combat. It's all kamehameha with no martial combat. When given an opportunity to have any faste paced action, the anime slows down time and has characters give entire monologues between or during attacks. Such as when Deku tries to stomp Overhall's head. Even the few exceptions such as All Might vs Nomu is marred by using the animation short-cut of just adding blurred punches instead of animating the body movements. I'm talking about the infamous gomu-gomu-no gatling-gun punches. The only fight of the series I think there is actually good sakuga is the second Deku vs Bakugo. Ida vs Mudman is pretty and colorful, yes, but look back at it again. There is very little movement of their bodies or interactions. It's another kamehameha moment. Pretty, but not a dance of anatomy. Seriously, check out some Naruto fights to see what I'm talking about.

The manga's fight scenes were sometimes hard to follow until the Overhaul arc, in my opinion. And Kohei Horikoshi loves doing big pictures that take up 2/3 of space across two pages. One of my biggest gripes with the art direction in season 5 is the depiction of winter. Winter skies are pale and pretty when clear, and dreary and gray when cloudy. In MHA S5, the sky looks exactly the same as if it were Summer, and when we see Todoroki's breath during the lecture scene in episode... 103? Idk, I've lost track. Anyways, when we see his breath, it feels a bit jarring. The atmosphere doesn't make the scene feel cold.

Anyway, I'm still looking forward for the My Villain Academia Arc, but after that arc ends I'm gonna watch most of the Endeavor Agency Arc again just to feel like I watched it in it's original continuity. That's my plan anyway. Edit: I just looked up that season 5 will apparently have 25 episodes and we're already on 17, I'm hoping it'd not gonna be rushed. But I'm still sticking to the plan

Don't they think that we know by now? Also the eye catches look really ugly with all the random text plus the translations that are too fast to even read. I think the pictures of the characters would be enough or they should've kept the eye catches from S1, where it was just the title changing colour or whaterver.

For what it's worth though, the DVD/Bluray releases of the show do not have the character names/abilities text on the screen at all, and it's the correct/best version of the show to watch since it comes with art fixes + no dimming of the light during action scenes.

  • @Nobody-eh3gu
    @Nobody-eh3gu3 жыл бұрын

Honestly, the anime was serviceable to me up until the beginning of season 4. It was good, definitely preferred the manga but I'll still tune in to see how most of the fandom experiences it. However, a new director and art director had come in before season 4 and I had been skeptical, especially since while he is experienced, the director doesn't have any impressive directing roles to my knowledge. After seeing the directorial style of the first eps of season 4 (both the recap and the first canon episode), I immediately went, "Oh, this doesn't seem good." My Hero Academia had never had very good direction but it was good enough to get the story across; however, the direction presented here, while not easily noticeable to the average viewer, was pretty subpar and awkward and just took me out of the story a lot, especially in dialogue heavy scenes (also the new art director is incredibly inconsistent, and the style that ended up in the anime the most is the very rectangular cheek style that I personally do not like at all). And lo and behold, at least in my opinion, the quality has been decreasing ever since with the rare sudden spikes of quality in the obvious scenes (aka deku vs. overhaul and endeavor's fight with high end). The padding techniques that the director uses also really sucks, such as the long flashbacks and really really long stretches of shots drawn from really really far away that the characters are only a few pixels to save on animation. Additionally, rearranging the arcs for the sake of the movie is always gonna be a bad idea, especially these arcs cuz the manga had the arcs in a certain order so that you as the reader can feel the effects of time on each side (alternating so that the week or so deku spent getting black whip under control is felt through the villain academia arc, and the four months for shigaraki is felt through the endeavor internship arc), but the anime has irreversibly ruined that so now deku just suddenly unlocks black whip immediately after saying he won't be using it for a while and those four months will be just stated right before entering the war arc. The worst part of this, though, is what I had said before: that these are not noticeable to the average viewer; they are, however, easily felt. So, unlike something like the promised neverland season 2 where everyone and their grandmothers knew that it was the adaptation itself that was a dumpster fire, average viewers would attribute the lessening quality of the anime to My Hero Academia as a whole instead of to the clumsy adaptation.

interesting to see how so many people are disappointed by this season. i for one have personally enjoyed seeing how it’s been handled. the character designs and the character acting in general has been handled much better this season. the storyboards and directing have been way more consistent, even among conservative episodes they do a great job of making the episode as visually pleasing as possible. but my favourite part of this season that has me excited for mhas future is the creative liberties it’s taken. i agree with your point that mha has followed the source material a bit too closely in the past. but since mukai took over as director, we’re seeing a lot more changes that let the story shine in anime form as best as possible. things like adding in the onomatopoeia for certain scenes, drawing scenes from different angles than the manga did, adding in extra content, and even something as simple as having current deku narrate the action in JT was a welcome surprise. even went as far as rearranging the setup for the war so it looks like we don’t have to worry about them following the manga too closely anymore😅 seems mukai has improved a lot as a director in season 5 so i’m expecting even more growth in season 6!! also a huge fan of the 3D backgrounds this year, they made for some really fluid and dynamic movement in JT and i’m excited to see them more. overall i’ve been enjoying season 5 more than any other besides 2, even more than 2 in some aspects, and i suspect mvas adaptation will make it my favourite season. sorry for the huge rant i just had a lot of thoughts on the animes current state as well.

I didn't really feel most of the pacing problems people point out, but i can see why they would feel a bit tired of the flashbacks, which, as Oceaniz said in the video, is a hard thing to adapt because it's not just a panel or 2, it's more like 5 or 10 seconds, but in a series like MHA where there is a lot of foreshadowing and callbacks, it's kinda necessary or at least normal. I'm looking forward to see how they handle the switch because this can really be my favourite season in the end if MVA is done right!

11:47 YES the lighting!!! I've never seen someone talk about this (maybe it's just the circles I'm in lol) and I thought maybe it was just my personal taste for muted, limited, or darker color palettes, or perhaps getting too used to the manga in black and white, that made me dislike the way the anime is often colored. But now that you've laid out these examples it's so obvious. And just look at Horikoshi's covers and color spreads for comparison. His use of contrast is gorgeous and I love the soft fill textures combined with bold dramatic lineart. It all has a certain dimension to it that I really wish could have been recreated.

about the lighting thing where it always looks like the midday sun is out, i completely agree with how it ruins the atmosphere. for the longest time, i was stumped on how the manga manages to look overall more.. *chilling* than the anime, and then i realized that the lighting plays a large part. in the manga, shading is used masterfully to make certain scenes send shivers down one's spine, but in the anime, things just seem a little less... *intense* when there isn't the intense atmosphere, created by intense lighting. i think i found the first s4 arc way more creepy in the manga and i always felt like more was at stake, rather than in the anime. i understand that mha is generally a colourful show and on the surface, its themes would come off pretty bubbly, but the charm of the manga (that appealed to ME most, that is) is that despite the use of no colour whatsoever, it can still manage to pull off both bubbly and fun and creepy and deadly. anyways, these are just my thoughts on the matter of atmosphere and how it affects the viewing experience, nothing too big. i just feel like the atmosphere plays a large part in how i enjoy anime - i sometimes refuse to watch certain things at a certain time just to get the right atmosphere (i.e. watched the first season of demon slayer as the sun was going down and late into the night with al the lights off, which made it a memorable experience because the atmosphere made the night fight scenes seem so.. scary, i'd say?). the thing with mha is, no matter how much i try to set the right atmosphere from the outside, there's only so much i can do to give myself the thrilling feeling that *something* is at stake. i do hope this changes during the war arc, because although the battle took place in the daytime, it was absolutely gruesome.

I don’t share many of the problems with the anime brought up in this vid. But the MVA switch has really messed up the pacing of S5 imo. Hori’s formula is to follow a high intensity arc with a more relaxed breather arc. In this season we get two breather arcs back to back, and the intense arc gets spoiled.

Every time somebody bags on season 5s animation quality I feel like I'm living in a bizarro other world. The animation itself has been GREAT. Honestly way better than it has been for the last couple seasons. We havent gotten any crazy animation sequences yet (mostly because there hasn't been anything that calls for it just yet... but we're getting there) BUT in general it's all been consistently pretty good, even during the smaller moments which previous seasons had completely phoned it in for. As for everything else... the pacing is really different. I really dont like the fact that they swapped mva and Endeavor agency, but my roommate is watching rn and he still loves it so maybe this is just a result of being a manga reader? I will say the pacing of joint training was TERRIBLE who did that? Who tf okayed some of that shit goddamn. Momos fight was especially egregious. We could have wrapped up that arc in way less time and given more time to mva (still not sure if we need it. It's a lot of action). And the decision to put filler in at this point of the series? I mean the episode wasnt terrible but cmon. Oh and the openings have been boring lol.

I hadn't considered how the lighting affects the overall atmosphere of the anime until this video and I'm really grateful for that new perspective. It IS a shame certain arcs or scenes weren't given more--let's say 'daring' for lack of a better word--lighting choices to best capitalize on the strength of the writing and characters in those scenes. As you've said, MHA is still a damn good series, but becoming aware of things like this, if nothing else, gives me food for thought on what it could have been. It does make me a bit sad but at the same time, it increases the love and respect I have for the manga. TLDR: Thanks for pointing stuff out. Great video as always!

(though, they used it with Deku when he first saw Nine in Heroes Rising) But apart from that, I love it! I have high hopes, looking back at all the fights they've animated ^ ^

So this is why the music felt so weird to me. It's great music used stupidly. Why didn't I think of this? Anyhow, great observation! And on the topic of faces: I hate Dabi's face in the anime. Everyone else felt kinda ok, but Dabi looks so weird, his face is elongated too much and it lost all of its roundness, I would say. Which is weird, because almost everyone else with a round-ish face still has that quality, like Deku, Mina, Shoto etc.
