My hardest test ride ever - KTM 500 EXC

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Join me on my search for a small rally/adv bike to complement my garage. I have two bikes that I am looking into. The KTM 500 EXC and the Kove 450 Rally.
In this video I join the wildest riders i know ‪@allintravelsweden‬ to test ride the KTM. I got the hardest and most fun test ride of my life, going in to caves, sand hills, single track and more. The county of Småland delivers an offroad paradise. But only if you are with the locals. I would never try this on my own.
My journey to find a small, fun bike has begun and this is a great start.

I had to make the same decision a few months ago but after I tried the kove I had no doubt. It’s the perfect dual sport and you don’t have to do any mods to make it more “dual sport”. A big thumb up for the kove

@@NomadSweden It’s less aggressive and in my opinion it has more torque. Definitely heavier but you don’t feel the difference because the kove has a low center of gravity. I found the kove way easier to control on low speed because the 500 tends to die easily.

500 is better to ride than 350, lots more torque means lower revs, less fatigue - people misunderstand the bike - i own 500, i also own sxf 450 and had a 350

Anyone who has the 500 seems to love it. I was amazed how different it is to the 450 exc. Slightly larger, more imposing , not as much lock on the steering. I struggled with the 500 after several days of riding the 450.

Had to make a similar decision, I used to ADV ride on my Suzuki DRZ for 7 years. Decided it was time for an upgrade, was looking at the Africa Twin, but after trying it out, felt that it was way too heavy for my liking. Ended up going for a Husqvarna 701 Enduro as there was a good deal for it. Really hits the sweet spot for me.

Happy to see anybody ditching the heavy bikes for lighter ones. It's a no-brainer I think. The 500EXC is a well known platform, the 450 KOVE looks amazing, but I personally fear and avoid anything the first year it's sold. Prediction: you ride the lighter bike more than the T7. You don't have to go into such serious places to enjoy having a lighter bike either!

Coming from street bikes/baggers with light dirt riding to a used tour kitted T7. The first thing I thought about is reducing the weight, took off the heavy gear and put on a Mivv Dakar exhaust. Those extra 20kg really make a difference off-road technically and mentally. I still worry about getting stranded on the T7 due to a drop at a bad angle.

I just downsized from the small 390 adv bike to a 500 for the same reasons as you. I bought the 390 because it was the smallest adv bike, but what I didn't know at the time was that I'd be picking it up a lot in the tough stuff. Got a on list for the 24' 500 exc-f and took delivery a couple weeks ago. It is more fun, confidence inspiring and ridiculously capable in every possible way than a small adv bike. I love it. Will probably sell the 390 as I can't bring myself to ride it anymore with the 500 right next to it. The Kove looks great, but the lack of dealer network, parts, service, reliability longevity unknown, Chinese resale values are too many checks against it for now. If it takes off in a few years and proves itself I'd consider one.🍻

Awesome, honest video for T7 fans Robert! I love my T7 but fear of the wheels sliding out due to the weight (I broke a rib last time) is taking some of the fun away. I'm thinking a 2023 Yamaha WR450 would be good for the gnarly enduro sections; although I'll still be riding RallyMoto's Kielder Dark Skies on my T7 at the end of October...

I just changed my DR650 tires to 60/40 dirt/road tires. That made a world of difference for confidence at lean. The horrible trailwings (aka Deathwings) would slip at lean, but keep slipping. It's obvious to see why: they round off and don't have knobbies sticking out on the edges. Traction starts to fall off and keeps falling. Every proper dirt tire I've ridden can start to slip at lean, but then claws it's way back into traction. The shinko 244's I put on aren't full dirt tires, but they have some of that. My friend was laughing watching video of some of my extreme swerve-recoveries as I was intentionally playing to learn their at lean capabilities. They aren't full MX tires, but they are excellent all-arounder's for dual sport/ADV.

I done a week in the Pyreneese on my T7WR with a lad on the KTM690, with some off road, and my friend thinks it’s the orange Unicorn, and a better service schedule to the 500. You’ve got some great skills Robert, some of that was narly.

But having a bike 50 kilos lighter is very welcome on a rally! My XR650R feels so light compared to the T7, but its 20 years old and i don't want to wreck it, so I'm looking at maybe a CRF rally, or a WR Yamaha . Cheers Steve

@@NomadSweden I own a 500 EXC with 13K kms on the clock (350 hours). I did a 500km ride yesterday with a friend on a CRF 300 Rally. I took his bike on a very steep incline with rocks that we had to ride though as he is vertically challenged AND a relatively new rider. They are very different bikes. The CRF is anemic and quite boring. It has very soft suspension and it's great for novices and a great value for money. Not my cup of tea though. My 500 is great as long as you don't have to ride long straight stretches on asphalt. Highlight "straight" because in the twisties I could keep up with hypersports like Hayabusas and ZZRs. It's a great great bike.

There seems to be am overwhelming enlightenment of sorts lately with this mass exodus of ADV riders progressively moving to smaller steeds. I too went from a GS to an Africa Twin to an 890 ADV R to a 450L and now I am on a KTM 500 EXC-F. The lighter weight bikes are so much easier to handle at slower, more technical speeds off-road and they ultimately make the average/non-pro rider more effective when things get technical. I'd like to add in another true ADV bike to my stable in the near future for trips where I need to slab it for long sections n between trails but I have yet to decide if that means going all the way back to a full-size GS/GSA or if another 890 will find its way into my garage. Either way, I am happy to have my 500 and there's no way I'd take a Chicom startup bike over a well established, fully backed, known quantity like the KTM 500. But at the end of the day it's great to see that others are slowly making a move to smaller, lighter bikes as well, because lets be honest here, as we age we really do need all the help we can get in order to stay active in this hobby/sport. In regards to the video, that tunnel/drainage ditch y'all rode in was epic, I'd kill for an opportunity to ride something like that. In regards to the Kove 450, I can't speak with experience as I haven't ridden one, but from all reviews and ride reports they say the power delivery is more like a 350, so a feeling of something between a 450 Rally and a 500 like you hope for is not likely. IMHO, a 500 with subtle mods to turn it into an ultra lightweight ADV bike of sorts is the ticket and that's exactly what I did with mine. Best of luck with your decision and a warm hello from Texas.

The average rider who intends to ride trails is crazy if they think that an ADV bike will suit their needs. The majority of ADV bikes I see are clearly not used anywhere other than sealed or gravel roads. If buying an ADV bike for the purpose of being able to ride on a gravel road, that too is a waste of money because a touring road bike with appropriate tyres is also capable. In fact I road down a loose gravel road from 1600 metres above sea level on an Yamha R1 with tyres which were one level below racetrack tyres (I barely used front brake and had to use rear brake to turn on switchbacks). The point I'm trying to make is that weight is your enemy if riding trails and a non professional rider has no place on trails with an ADV. Cheers

Try a modded (tm40 and pipe) DR and see if that works for you. It will do freeway all day long without burning oil. It's a lot lighter than a T7, and it has a low center of gravity. I just threw an RMZ450 front end on mine, for a big suspension improvement.

  • @user-tf1oo9rj6u

@@cyclemoto8744 I've taken all my street bikes off-road. A lot of people are only doing very light offroad, but I 100% agree about weight. *Most of the "ADV" bikes are really just more capable tourers.* You _can_ take them offroad. The extra suspension helps. But they aren't really meant for it. It's fine for taking a service road to a camping spot or open forest (but then so are my street bikes, albeit at less comfort and more effort). I'd put the T7 as a middle-weight AVD bike. It's capable in the right hands, and engineered for it more than most bikes, but it's still very heavy. A lot of people buy the T7, then end up selling it because of the weight. If I had one, I would love it!... but still want a lightweight dirtbike to hang with the dirtbike crowd offroad. My dr650 is good enough to do both the freeway and keep up with the dirtbike friends. But it won't ever feel as good on the road as a T7. Anyone looking to tour/camping trip moto with light offroad to the camping spots should love the T7. I could see my cousin who loves her Triumph Tiger liking the T7. Now the category of lightweight ADV bikes is interesting. We need a few more modern 400-500cc's to really make this category shine.
