My Ham Radio Outdoors: 1min deployable Go-box, mini EFHW 80-10 antenna, FT-891 radio.

Ham Radio rapid deployment is very important in radio operations outdoorsy , in the field day contests, but also in emergency situations or preparedness exercise.
In this video, I share my own experience with my go-box project, mini EFHW multiband antenna, I also discuss what ham radio equipment specs really matter in the field.
Here is the link to my other video, devoted to the construction of the antenna featured in this video.

Nicely done! Let ‘s not get caught up in the weeds. If you've got the power, use it and restore it as needed. It’s important to get the message out.

I like your radio van Linas !! I would be tempted to put an operating desk in the back with all the equipment spread out nicely on the desk. I'm not sure they sell that van in my country - it looks like a Renault with raised roof. It would make a perfect radio van...maybe even room for a bed in the back. A tour of the vehicle would be nice to see for those looking to buy a communications vehicle

Thanks John! My radio van is not exclusively for communication purposes, it's also a family recreation vehicle, fully suited for 2 adults and a small dog :), with comfy sleeping place, kitchen and WC. So, I thought it would be unpractical to permanently install ham radio equipment all around the space :). But yes, I can, and often do install an "office desk" , just not in the back but in the front. It can accommodate even a bigger radio, like Elecraft K3, a laptop PC etc, if I want to take part in a bigger contest or something. Anyway thanks for a tip, I will do a video some day with more details on the radio and travel installations of my Renault Trafic van. 73! Linas LY2H.

Sure! Great idea- make one for yourself! If you already have the radio, battery, ATU etc., the case and fixture will cost you up to EUR35 and few hours of work :) Good luck! 73! Linas LY2H

The FT 891 is my radio of choice for NVIS with my 20 AH battery and 1000 watt Solar Generator with 2 - 100 watt Solar panels. It does a great job for me. Great Video👍❗️73 KV5P

Cool! My solar in the van is also 200W into 135Ah battery, serves the camper and ham radio needs nicely. But I noticed that even my small 50W foldable solar pannel in pair with the Genasun controller provides with nice 2A if current and is perfect for my Bioenno 20Ah battery. We need to use all the options we've got! 73! Linas LY2H

Checkout the Spiderpole 10m, same concept for the efhw, coils I have for the g5vr 40/80m I think they are, bought online with lengths of line.

You are in a van you can charge up using your engine so why worry about the current consumption. If you were walking you worry about weight. So I would use a pen and paper for logging, the same antenna with the pole at mid point (inverted V) and my FT817 with a manual tuner providing SSB and CW.

Thanks Chris! That's exactly what I do when in hiking ham radio mode :) As for charging, I only use car's alternator to charge the camper's battery when driving anyway, and only in critical situations,as my van's solar set-up keeps the battery charged most of the time. I never use engine for charging when on the camp site though with other campers around. 73! Linas LY2H

Awesome job Linas! The case & equipment fit nicely. The concept of a rapidly deployable mobile rig makes perfect sense. I have an iCom IC7000 and LDG tuner… I have all the nessecary components… but alas, I’ve yet to mount everything. Your video serves to motivate me to finish it… For a mobile rapid deployment rig, I think a 100w transceiver to be best. I’d plan to run my rig at 20w. It keeps the draw reasonable and manageable, with a solar panel, charge controller and battery, proper metering, and encased components, it’s entirely manageable. I’m curious, have you ordered the new QXM from Hans? Great video Linas! 72 de W7UDT

Thanks Rand! I agree with you that 100W radio is most logical approach. BTW, by no means it is necessary to run 100W at all times! In the park activations I usually start with 50-60W , very light regime for the rig, and, if necessary, I increase later if I see that I'm not heard good enough by remote stations. Yes, I have ordered the QMX from QRPLabs some 2 weeks ago, but it's still in waiting due to high demand. So far only thise who bought it in Dayton from Hans can physically have it. So far no new reviews though. 73! Linas LY2H

Hallo Reiner! It's a tablet PC with dual OS- Win10 and Android of the Chinese brand Aiboully, 4GB/64GB . It does the job for logging/browsing/digital modes but otherwise is rather slow. But there was not so big choice of light and afordable tablet PCs, all Androids around and I needed a PC for my go-box. HTH, 73! Linas LY2H
