My Ham Radio Contact With International Space Station NA1SS
Ғылым және технология
Today I was able to make a quick contact to astronaut Serena Aunon on board the international space station during an overhead pass. I was using a Yaesu FTM-400 and Diamond x-510 antenna at 50 feet using 50 watts. Here is a link to the tracking site I was using:

For some reason, this moved something so deep inside me. A man speaking to astronauts 254 miles above him with what most would consider obsolete technology, and them responding so casually; it truly is a microcosm of something really beautiful. Like maybe, in the extreme chaos and hate of the world around us, passion breeds genuine interest, and subsequently love. I'm going to go call my grandfather now.

As a teen ,I have a pleasant memory of talking to some ISS astronauts. My step dad was a ham radio operator. He built a 54ft tower with 3 massive beams, that would turn, being fully controlled from his computer. We contracted the ISS on a few occasions.

That's absolutely fascinating! I had no idea you could speak directly with the ISS astronauts using a ham radio. (Props to the Daily Dose of Internet for sharing your video. I learned something new today.)
There’s something so heart warming and beautiful about an astronaut-who has far more important work to do-taking the time to make a person’s day down on Earth by exchanging pleasantries over amateur radio ❤️
Congrats on the contact. I had the same experience about 5 years ago
What an incredible example of what technology can do. Must have been wonderful doing this, keep up the great work!
Congrats Larry, very nice contact. In my career I've made contact with NA1SS twice, both times land mobile to space mobile.
Very cool contact, looks like your geared up very well to track the ISS, I bet when other hams are listening and hear a solid transmission, they all flock. Thanks for sharing your experience, very interesting. Kind regards, Eric Dee.
You’re my hero! I wanted a HAM radio as a kid. Now I’m a grown up but still this is so amazing. Well done sir!

I'd like to add, the lesson learned is that for hams wishing to make contact with the ISS, go ahead and program in the ISS uplink (144.490 MHz) and downlink (145.800 MHz) frequency on your rig and store it to memory as a split memory. Do this for your base station and mobile rig. I happened to have my base rig on scan and just happened to pick the ISS up as they flew over and were making contacts.. Like you, I worked them with a vertical antenna and 50w of power.
Very nice contact Larry! I had my first crack at satellite operation tonight and got a nice long pass from AO-91. Wow, to an uninitiated person like me that just happened to run to this video, that is totally awesome! But then considering the ISS is only 400km high with no obstacles in between, it's not that unbelievable. My question is how do they know they have a call and from whom that call is? Isn't every amature radio enthusiast in the world trying to contact them, and if yes, why do they even bother to answer?
That's awesome. Humans are amazing. We rock.
