Thing is Lamborghini was like what Tesla is today. It was a recent start up and had been around for just a few years as a sports car company. People went down to this... "random" sports car company and just bought a car that they thought looked good. Who knew they'd appreciate so much in value today? Can't blame your dad for his passionate love affair with the Miura, inarguably one of the most beautiful cars ever made, but....wowzer.
A Miura for his 16th birthday, Jesus Christ!
Back in the 70's, I found an original ferrari 250 gto sitting on a trailer, in a field; close to my neighborhood. The car was just a shell, and was eventually sold back to Enzo. The owner of the ferrari also had a DeTomaso Mangusta, a Gullwing Mercedes, and a Lamborghini Miura sitting in an old barn.. I also found and bought an original 289 AC Cobra.
My dad in the late 60’s had 3 1966 GT-350 Shelby’s, one was his DD, one parts car, and one as a track car he used to win several New England SCCA titles. He obviously regrets selling those, but this is a whole new level!
Fantastic story and perspective, John. Thanks for sharing!

2 things: 1, the Miura is my unicorn and I’d take one any day of the week over a 250GTO. 2, I’m 41 yrs old but from 21-24 I had a 1971 Porsche 911T Targa, numbers matching that I paid $9k for and sold for $8k. The are now bringing triple digits 😖😖😖

Not only in value, but overall, I much prefer GTO much more than Miura!
Amazing history, but you cant blame your grandfather. The Lamborghini Miura is a beautiful vehicle. GTO will always be a GTO. Both sexy.
This guy has an amazing dealership in Miami. Mint cars showcased like a museum. Also very friendly by the way.
My Grandfather sold the 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible he bought new in 1987. It had very low mileage and was in mint original condition when he sold it. Wish it was still in the family.
My dad had a mint condition 429 auto torino convertable that he sold for some measly sum of cash that nowadays would sell for around the ballpark of 35-40,000. He always tell me about how he kicks himslef for not keeping that car.
That's one of those cars I would always regret selling no matter what I told myself lol
Miura for 16th birthday? I got $500 towards a 1986 Mazda 626 GT.....in 1996. So pretty much the same thing I guess. Damn.
A user's grandfather on a community website I'm on had a similar experience. His grandfather was working with some company that had investments in some car dealers. So one day, his grandfather gets a promotion and gets to pick between two cars he was presented with as a promotion compliment - A brand new Ford Coupe of some sort and a used race winning Ferrari 250 TDF. His grandfather chose the Ford because it was new and that Ford was a reputable company. Fast forward into 2010s, that same 250 TDF that his grandfather was offered was sold at an auction for $14m! He says his grandfather regrets not getting the Ferrari when he could've 😂

Same thing happened to hemi muscle cars in the 70s and 80s. Thousand bucks or less would’ve bought you a good example of a 4 speed hemi cuda. And unlike the ferraris which were thoroughbred race cars with double digit production numbers, the old muscle cars were just regular mass produced road cars with big engines, and that reflected on how they were treated. People cut them up, painted flames on them, parked them in the grass outdoors. At the time they were just another used car. Now that same car is rolling across the auction block for millions. Just goes to show that whether it’s a car or a baseball card, you should always find out what it is you have before throwing it away or selling it.
My neighbor bought a KISS t-shirt in 1987 for $5 and now uses it to wash his mom’s 1993 Buick LeSabre in her driveway.
My dad owned a supra that he bought used in the United States and took it to Mexico he told me he liked the car but it was impractical because my mom couldn’t drive stick so he sold it to a family friend who he also sold a gran marquis too for 10k in usd which was just sad to hear he said it only had 9 thousand miles and was Stick and he only found out about the values when I showed him one on the internet that was going for almost 60k and he said son I used to own that car.

I wrote my masters dissertation on classic cars. They do outperform the S&P 500 for example but if you factor in maintenance costs, insurance, storage, etc. their only value as an investment is their negative correlation with more conventional assets. With that being said, that negative correlation disappears as soon as a a shock event takes place which means that they drop in value during recession (duh).
I had a similar story on a 1972, yellow 911. Unrestored and all original. Also, didn’t leak a drop of oil either. All over $2,000.

I found the car in Marco Island, FL in 2007 and it was not for sale but the security guard for the building knew the owner and called him. He came down and I was prepared to go right to the bank and get him $10k (my hard #). He was willing to sell it but his # was $12k. Like an idiot, I walked away. This was a pretty good story and the ending sort of brought everyone back to where the story began. Buying what you like.

Good morning, have a great Tuesday!
My dads buddy sold the shell of a real Mercedes Gullwing in the 80’s for $3000. after he sold it a man offered $20,000 not knowing he had already sold it.
So, what you're saying is there is still some hope for my 1966 Chevy Corvair Monza 110?
Several car collector friends have given me the same advice about buying cars. Don't buy purely to try to make a profit or as an "investment". Buy what YOU like. If you get lucky and the car appreciates, good for you. If it doesn't, well, you had a lot of fun driving around in a car you're passionate about. They all DRIVE their cars too! Taking their EB110, TdF, GT40, or Miura to go get the groceries, or to run an errand. Any excuse to drive them.
My buddy's grandpa didnt mess up that hard but it still hurts. He sold an all original, numbers matching, perfectly mint (even factory tires on it still) 1969 superbird for $10k about 15 years ago and wow is that sad to hear today.
It is 4 wheels and a motor but it tugs at your heart . I will always have a soft spot for my first car a 79 VW Rabbit!! It is crazy how hard it is to find them now.
Even my DOG is whimpering over this story
