Great video and explanations, really like some of these practical tips. I've just picked up the Ricoh GR3x yesterday to use on an upcoming family vacation as a EDC point and shoot. I just might have found a new hobby. Thank you for posting this - subscribed

I think that's a very good choice. Just had my first trip/holiday with Ricoh, and it worked so well as a travel companion. I literally took photos all the time. I'll probably post something about that soon! I Did you enjoy the Ricoh during your trip?

My opinion: P mode is superior to manual or aperture priority for almost any situation. You can change the shutter speed/aperture combo with the front wheel and do exposure compensation with the +- switch on the back. And of course the ISO can either be left on auto or quickly changed with the rear dial. I have set a max ISO of 6400 and a min shutter speed of 1/60 sec. I also like to remove info from the display. I set up the DISP button such that pushing it gives me either all info including histogram and grid lines, or no info whatsoever. 95% of the time I shoot with no info.

That's a good idea. I don't use most of the info either. Even when I have it on the screen. I prefer using my eyes for this. I haven't managed to get myself to use the P mode. Bot sure why yet. I am very accustomed to using manual mode these days, and it is hard for me to give up control I guess.

Plan on setting up my Ricoh to your specs. Quit using DLSR years ago due to logistics. And iPhone worked so well. However, reached a point where when traveling I want something light and easy (check) but with the ability to us Shutter or Aperture priority or a simple Manual set up. Something not full auto but not slow and cumbersome to take both quick pics and set up pics. Hoping your settings get me there to start. Thanks for sharing and trying to take away complexity.

I hope you managed to set it up and it works for you! Let me now how you are getting one with them. Yeah..Phone cameras are fine but If you really want to control your photographs they don't give you many options. Ricoh is the perfect combination of small size and full camera specs. The quality you can get from it is really good and the experience shooting with it is fantastic. One of my favorite cameras still!

Thanks for the video - good advice about the display, I think I’ll change my settings accordingly. I prefer to use my GRiiiX as a Snapshooter, so that (for me) generally means P Mode. I use P Mode in conjunction with the different Snap Focus distances in U1/2/3. That allows me to react immediately to all photo opportunities. Because I generally shoot in P Mode, I often have the display off - that’s even more discreet….and extends battery life.

That's a good point! Snapshooter! I like it. You should trademark it. I never thought of just changing the focus distance only in the U modes. Might give it a go and see if it suits me. I like the idea of shooting with the screen off, but I would like to have the external rangefinder Ricoh offers. Then it would feel like the complete film experience, I guess. Thanks for the tips!

@@AristeidisSfakianos - if you want the real “film experience“ turn the display completely off, take the SD card out, set the camera to Raw, and that will give you 40 images ….. approximately from the internal memory - just like a roll of film “in the old days“ :- )

@@AristeidisSfakianos - yes, I think it would be a great video idea….if only to alert other GR users….Ricoh don’t seem to promote what is an excellent feature and in my experience, a lot of GR users aren’t even aware of it!!! :- )

i’ve always been a full manual guy. but i started using auto iso with the xpro2, and haven’t gone back. the xpro2 had that weird iso dial, which made it annoying to change, so i went with auto. with the gr it’s the same. auto iso. iso doesn’t affect the image creatively, and i can use compensation to change the iso if i want to. i tried messing with a priority mode, but i kept finding situations where i wasn’t able to get things the way i wanted. if im on the street it probably wouldn’t matter, but i like manual with auto iso. it’s great, and it keeps me from missing a shot because of a quick change in lighting

That's interesting. I am usually more reluctant using auto ISO because I don't want the camera to go too high and lose control over my noise. But I should experiment with this. Sounds useful!Cheers for the suggestion mate!

@@AristeidisSfakianos my iso is limited to 6400, and i just keep an eye on it. if it gets up to like 1600, then i adjust my settings to compensate. but if i need to take a photo quickly, and i haven’t considered the lighting yet, ill still get a good exposure because of the auto iso. it’s a nice way to work

First of all, I am honored that someone with your experience had a look at my channel! I agree with you completely. I just had my first full trip with it and couldn't stop taking photos with it. The quality was really high, of course, which makes me so enthusiastic given that it is so small that it fits in my pocket. I am glad you are enjoying it so far too!

Hiya, thank you for your video. Could you please tell me what software do you use for editing Raw? I've just bought gr3x and found that my C1 22 pro doesn't support this camera properly. It's frustrating that is I have to buy newer version of it.

Have you tried shooting RAW+JPG in B&W or in color with filter look? I find no reason to not use Aperture Priority along with a Minimum Shutter Speed or 1/320 or 1/400s . I usually leave the sound off -- doesn't this camera have a manual shutter? Let know is you ever experience dust or rear dial issues over time. I believe you have my email address. Seems like over time using the monitor to compose a shot feels more natural, but I do wonder if an EVF is still essential when that monitor washes-out in the sunlight, or you just want to clearly see what the camera is seeing? With my Canon RP or Lumix GX9, I have that option. One thing I find annoying is trying to use the flippy screen on the RP. I just do not like the use of articulating / swing-out screens anywhere, and especially on the street. I think a simple tilt screen on a GR would be a nice thing to have. I am trying out PortraitMode now for posting photos. They are just starting out on their journey, and not famously used, like Instagram, but we all start somewhere. Have fun, Loren Schwiderski

I haven't done this yet Loren but I was thinking of making this a video. I mean using the Ricoh GRIIIx with a film like filter etc. I believe I can even make one myself. Still I haven't got used to the aperture priority. I think my main problem is the ISO. Because if I am shooting in very dark conditions the camera tends to bump up the ISO too much if I haven't set up a limit. And If I have set a limit and I need to increase it more I need to remove the limit and adjust it manually. So I can avoid all that by just setting up the camera to manual. In terms of the monitor I haven't had a problem with intense sunlight so far but definitely having an EVF (or any can of view finder) there helps a lot. I am thinking of buying the extension they have and try it out. The Ricoh doesn't have a flippy screen so I don't have to think about that at all. I've heard about PortraitMode. How is your experience with it? Very nice to read your comment Loren. All the best!
