My Girl (1991) | First Time Watching | Movie Reaction

Ойын-сауық

This week we've got another "Patreon Pick of The Month". This time the winner was "Mike The Ginger" and his choice was the 1991 movie My Girl. Mike has a movie reaction channel that we highly suggest you go check out:
/ @mikesmoviereviews
This is one that neither of us had ever seen and had no idea what to expect. I had seen people warn in the comments on other videos that this was a sad movie and during the first half I wasn't sure I was remembering correctly. It turned out to be a movie with a little bit of everything. It was funny, heartwarming and sad all at the same time.
Special thanks to our Studio level Patrons for their support of our channel: Cody Yote, Phoenix Drawz, RE/MAX Alamo Realty, Zecca V1, Chris Reulbach

I can answer why it is called My Girl. Because though Vada and Thomas J are best friends, Thomas J loves Vada. Hence why he asked her to think of him. Thomas sees her as his girl. That is why he went back for the ring.

"Where are his glasses? He can't see without his glasses!" Emotional Damage! 😭 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Nancy L. Chlumsky and Glenda Chism. Hot Take Fact: Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin took 15 takes in their kissing scene. Casting Notes Fact: Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis also worked together in Trading Places (1983). Location Location Fact: The film is set in Madison, Pennsylvania however it was filmed almost entirely in Florida. The house used as Vada's (Anna Chlumsky) house was actually a bed-and-breakfast in Bartow, Florida. Movie Magic Fact: The willow tree seen throughout the movie is not a real willow tree. Finding a perfect pond with a willow tree was so hard that the creators found a different tree, removed all of its branches, and replaced them with fake willow tree branches. Practical Over CGI Fact: Macaulay Culkin did the infamous bee nest/death scene with actual bees. While they mistakenly used a hornets nest (not a bees nest) they did release actual bees. They released about a hundred live bees as CGI wasn't good enough at the time to do it more safely.

One thing I have to say about Anna Chlumsky (Vada). For her age in this movie, she did an incredibly convincing job in this role. Everyone watching could feel the absolute pain her character was feeling during "the scene" as she's sobbing and slowly walks up to the casket and sees her best friend who she will never see alive again. I've seen recent interviews with her and whenever the interviewer brings up that scene, she always acts so humble saying her acting was just ok. But I think the entire world begs to differ. Her acting was out of this world incredibly done.

Vada is my girl, she's the center point, Thomas Jay's girl, her father's girl, the teacher's girl. It very much is a coming of age drama and that involves death, from natural death to unfair death of a child. Vada in the film is shown to not understand it. Each time a new body comes to the house she begins to show she's a hypochondriac, which is also due to her not wanting to be around. Early on she noticed a child shaped coffin & had no idea what it was for and Harry not really being attentive is shown sheltering her. The My Girl title also applies to Shelly, My Girl is stepping in to show my girl what life is like growing up. Dramas back in those days didn't hold your hand and I was glad for it. Wish we still had that now.

So I picked this movie because it had a combination of sweet, sad, and funny along with great acting by Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis and the two lead child actors. It was also one I assumed Toni and Dave may not yet have seen, but that was actually quite a little hit back in the early 1990s. I remember watching this in 1994 when I was a kid during the NBC Network Television premiere (anyone else remember those in the 90s?) and then my family bought the sequel "My Girl 2" on Pay-Per-View later that same year. I promise that if I ever get a chance to pick another movie, it'll be something less sad. - Mike

I think, more than anything, the most powerful thing about this movie is Vada learning how to process death and trauma, and the people that care for her coming together around her to support her and stand behind her when she really needed them. Grief is a difficult thing to process, especially for a child who's been exposed to so much death that it's made to feel normalized. Her father didn't know how to process his own grief, he goes by through life being almost desensitized to death because of his job. So how is he supposed to go about explaining how to process grief and death to his child? He deals with a lot of his problems by ignoring them and compartmentalizing, but a child doesn't know how to do that. I don't think that's uncommon, especially in a mortuary field. But when you're a parent whose responsibility it is to explain those things to your child and make them feel like they can express their emotions in a healthy way, it's your duty to step outside of your own comfort zone and put the needs of your child before your own. It makes it even harder when, as a man, you can't entirely relate to the experiences your daughter is going through, no matter how hard you try. I think Shelly did a good job of communicating that to him, even if their relationship was something that Vada couldn't process on her own. Shelly was open and honest and able to see Vada's trauma in a way that her father had come to understand as normal. She's a good influence, and you can tell by the concern she shows for Vada even outside of her relationship with her father. She's not trying to replace Vada's mother, but being able to relate to her in a way that her father can't is something she didn't have to do. It's something she chose to do because she cared about Vada as her own person.

I just came across your channel today and this was the first video I watched. I haven’t seen this movie in a long time. I was SOBBING with you. I had to run to the bathroom before my husband saw me 😂 this movie hits me sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. I think seeing you cry so hard, it hit me too. Love the reaction. I love this movie so much, explaining death to a child is so hard and I don’t think Veda ever really understood it until Thomas Jay passed. The 2nd one is good ! She’s a teenager and is looking for more info on her mom to see what she was like. It’s not a sad one 😎

I just watched the bingo scene again(it was posted nine months ago). Actor Harvey Bellman, who played the announcer, would have made a terrific bingo announcer in real life; he had a great voice. He also played a “neighborhood extra” in Edward Scissorhands two years prior to this. He passed away eight years ago, on 6/10/2016, the day after his 70th birthday. May he 🪦 RIP. :)

I honestly don't know why it's called My Girl. However the movie is considered a coming-of-age story where Veda is surrounded by Death and is constantly believing something's wrong with her then her best friend dies and she has to come to terms with the the loss of that friend. I think this movie was brilliant when I first saw it considering that it takes an interesting look at the complexities of grief and Views it through a child's eyes. Veda blames herself for her mother's death but when someone she actually knows passed away she struggles for a bit coming to terms with the fact that he is gone but in the end she manages to move on and uses coping skills such as writing in communicating what do people around her to put her in a better state

I LOVE this movie for 2 reasons...1) for the first 3/4ths of this movie you get an average coming of age comedy...THEN you get your butt kicked with a twist that NO ONE saw coming and was NOT even hinted at in the trailer. I HATE movies where I know everything thats going to happen from beginning to end ALA "rocky" or the "rambo" movies. 2) this movie showed REAL LIFE trauma and heartache. There’s one particular thing about this movie that I never could quite understand, we find out pretty quickly that Vada’s best friend Thomas J is one of those people are allergic to everything ( or at least enough for him to have to be careful about what’s he eats and drinks and what he does and where he goes) then why wasn’t he told to stay as far away from bee’s as possible since Bee sting allergies are one of the most common type allergies known to man and Also,I’m not 100% certain if I’m right about this but I’m pretty sure that Epi-pins were around during the time period in which this movie was released and if that’s the case.then why didn’t Thomas J’s parents have him take one with him wherever he went? ! I mean,I know that Thomas J’s death is what brings Vada and her father together but couldn’t they have done something a little bit differently? Like he goes back to the Woods’s, to look for Vada’s mood ring during a time period when he thought the bees would be less active and less likely to bother him. Unfortunately, he does wind up being stung and even though he was able to grab his epi-pin and inject himself,it was a little while before someone found him and called help that by the time he arrived at the ER,he’s barely conscious and the doctor later tells everybody that Thomas J came within 15 minutes of not surviving. I mean,,couldn’t they have done the scene this way and have become closer as result of Vada nearly loosing her best friend?
