My First Year of Seaplane Ownership
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Updates on owning and flying a seaplane for the past year. What I've learned so far as a low time seaplane pilot, and new seaplane owner. I purchased my 2012 Experimental Searey LSX in June of 2022, and have been flying it as much as I can to get better.

Great Job! I am right behind you starting my first year of ownership of my A5. Boy are you right, insurance is NUTS.
I need to get my Searey up to Michigan one of these days. I was born and raised in Saginaw/Bridgeport. 700 hours in the Searey now for me. It just is an immensely fun airplane.

Absolutely excellent 1 year review. Very informative, honest and humble. This information is golden for somebody who is considering getting into either ultralights or light sport. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I live on Lake Erie and I always thought about switching over to a seaplane similar to yours but I always worried that it would limited my flying but you changed my mind, thanks
Great comments, and I concur with all. I bought my first Searey a couple months ago and had similar experiences (including the uncomfortable wife moment and almost stuffing the plane...lol). But after 50+hours in the the past two months I'm finally getting the hang of it ;-) There has been some fiddly maintenance issues with the tailwheel, toe in/out alignment, and fixing how the splashguard was mounted, but they are terrific and fun airplanes to play with. We just finished a trip from North Alabama to Dayton Ohio and back last weekend. Not fast, but comfortable and just all around fun. Btw..."Go blue!"
Great video ❤ glass water landings Same trouble with water getting in maybe thru the boom tube fittings Great aircraft for manoeuvring in tight spaces

Thanks. Yea. I've checked the boom tube, and the cap on the end of it. Also replaced the transom seal. I think it's the cable fittings that run through there. Just had those sealed up again.
Cool!
Really interesting and excellent ownership report. I’m flabbergast by the insurance cost, even knowing how much aviation insurance has jacked up recently. Did I hear you saying “conditional inspection” repeatedly? The regs refer to “condition inspection”. It s not “conditional,” you must do the inspection whether it “passes” or not. Hope to hear more about you Searey adventures.
@thecommercialpilot

Yea, it's condition. Not conditional. I misspoke.
Great video!! Thanks for keeping us up to speed.. I've been dreaming about having my own Sea Ray for at least 15 years did you say the company is going out of business?

They were closed for a while. They're still not making planes afaik but there's at least one person shipping parts on occasion now. Which is nice!
If you want to go to a unique place in your searey Google blarney island Antioch illinois. The problem would be there is no place to beach it.

Thanks for the tip!
Everyone I've talked to about sea rays has referenced the insane insurance requirements and cost. Seems to be the single largest limiting factor to more people buying them.
@thecommercialpilot
Жыл бұрын
Yea. It’s a bit expensive. But it’s not the end of the world. My Grumman insurance is cheap, but the maintenance is way more expensive. The SeaRey still ends up being an amphibian that’s cheaper to run than a 172.
Great stuff! Hit us up if you're ever in New England - always looking for someone to do flights of two with on our SeaRey water adventures!

Fly this in a sim regularly and gets absolutely bullied by the wind. Would love to fly a real one, looks sporty😉
Another question. Do you find that seaplane activities like beach docking and fishing tend to get a lot of slop in your plane. Would you recommend an easy to wash out interior?
@thecommercialpilot

Yea I just hose it out periodically, and check / clean the bilge.
Welcome back! Has your tiger been relegated to your travel machine and the searey is your fun machine?
@thecommercialpilot
Жыл бұрын
The Tiger is fun too! But yea it mostly gets used for trips. Probably 70% work and 30% fun. The Searey is 100% fun for just cruising and splashing around.
Do you train to get a pilot license? Or know any private instructors in the Metropolitan area?
I fly a cygnet in miami , less expensive. 😊
Did you say the great lakes region?! Where are you? I live in Goodrich MI south of Flint. I am looking into buying a sea plane like yours. I'd love to check out your seaplane!

@@bocefusmurica4340 not that I’m aware of, you can get access to Goclubs without a serial, but I don’t think full access. Which, yea, is lame.
I am looking to build /buy an Aeroventura2, I have a single engine land rating and helicopter rating. I plan to go to FL to learn to fly. Do you think it would be advantages to obtain a tailwheel rating before I travel to Florida? Tailwheel training is available close by.
@thecommercialpilot
9 ай бұрын
I would believe so, yes. Then you can focus on seaplane techniques instead of tailwheel and seaplane during your time in Florida. I found the tailwheel learning to be a bit trickier than the seaplane.
@anthonyspadafora1384
9 ай бұрын
@@thecommercialpilot Thanks, I am going to do that. I made the same mistake learning to fly helicopters before airplanes when actually I wasted a lot of hours trying to learn the radio. The airplane is a much better atmosphere to learn radio and flight procedures. So I'm going to take your advice and get the tail wheel training first.
Have you gotten it back from inspection yet?

I have a new SeaRay and looking for an experienced instructor to fly with me in Sarasota FL. I'm an 3000hr professional pilot with a seaplane rating. Thanks
Cost? 130k?
@thecommercialpilot
3 ай бұрын
I paid about 80k. Classics go for 50-70. Experimental LSX’s seem to be 80-120 and LSA’s are currently 110-130 or so.
Hello i was sort if interested in the ICON A5 but when i found out it only has 100hp and cant even take off with 2 people and a full tank as it will be overweight i lost interest. So my question is what is the highest HP you can get in a Searey ?
@thecommercialpilot
3 ай бұрын
It’s experimental so technically whatever you want. But standard is 100hp Rotax 912 or 115hp turbo rotax 914. I have the 914 and it’s plenty of power.
