My First Week: A Week in the Life of a First-Time Lyft Driver

Should I drive with Lyft? If you’ve thought about driving, or even if you’re approved as a first-time Lyft driver but haven’t given that first ride, it’s totally understandable that you might feel a little nervous. There’s the app. Directions. New people. But it’s also fun, flexible, and a great way to earn money. To give you a better sense of what driving with Lyft is like, we followed a new driver during her first week-no help, advice, or special assistance. We just let the cameras roll!
The driver, Shanice, signed up with Lyft because she likes to travel and wants to save up money. But she was anxious about getting behind the wheel. You’ll see what happens when Shanice finally gets over her fear and gives that first ride. “When I turned on the app, I was so nervous,” Shanice says. “It was surprising just how friendly people are and how willing they are to open up and talk.”
As a social worker, Shanice is drawn to people and their stories. She says driving with Lyft has given her another way to connect. After all, everyone has a story. Now you get to hear hers-and learn a lot about the real experience of driving with Lyft.

    Been driving Lyft now for several months in San Diego county. Like anything else, after you do it long enough, it becomes second nature. The real trick where I am is learning where to be and when to be there. After a while you get to know the best areas (few drivers and more riders) and can easily get 8-10 rides in less than 6 hours.

    I have only been driving for Lyft in Jacksonville FL for about a month now and I love this video because it is exactly how i felt when I started! im still trying to get the hang of where to pick people up. I feel like the app just drops me in the area instead of where the person actually is and that gets frustrating sometimes. But I have learned some riders know people usually get lost picking them up where they are and they are used to it and helpful.

    Hello, I drive in NY with Lyft, Uber & Juno MOSTLY at NIGHT HOURS for 2 1/2 years AND IT'S THE BEST EXPERIENCE !!! No traffic to deal with, everyone are very nice people when you treat them with respect. Don't be scared, just be always aware of your surroundings & keep your doors locked when you WITHOUT customers. There's absolutely nothing to be afraid of driving at night hours when it comes to safety, It's actually a lot easier than you think. 👍

    I have been Lyft Driver for 5 days. I have a great suggestion. Instead of looking at your navigation, go into your Lyft app and turn on your audio. A voice will speak your roads to turn on and tell u where to go. I have an ear plug I place in my left year and listen to commands where to turn and I don’t look at my cell. I keep right ear available to listen to my riders.

  • @milam4193

    @milam4193

    Having any earpiece while driving will guarantee you a BIG TICKET in NY ! Try to explain it to police. My GPS directions are coming from the vehicle's speakers so riders can hear & will be aware when we approach to their final destination. It's been over a year & I never received any complaints. Nothing wrong with it IF THEY WANT TO ARRIVE ON TIME. Not to mention that passengers are aware & have no doubts about your earpiece knowing that your attention is on the road & you're NOT distracted while listening to a sport event commentator etc. while driving... they don't know it. P.S. I found it strange when one of my drivers had sport event commentator through his vehicle's speakers... we both were listening to a game. I prefer to hear GPS directions or smooth jaz relaxing music and know that a driver is not distracted with a sport game. By the way WATCH YOUR RATING !!! Any use of an earpiece will LOWER your ratings. It's a safety concern. Passengers prefer to stay aware instead of doubting purpose of earpiece... Make sure YOU USE ride share SERVICES not just as a driver BUT ALSO as a PASSENGER... for instance when you need to go to a Doctor's appointment etc. That's how I see other drivers MISTAKES and learn from them. You have to see it from a PASSENGER'S SEAT to understand wha it is like to be a passenger in YOUR VEHICLE. Believe me it HELPS A LOT. Good luck.

    I just read MILA M reply to my posting. It’s not illegal to have one ear plug in listening to directions in SD. I watched another driver do that. But you have a good point about a rider thinking I’m listening to something and distracted. I never thought of that. I was thinking I was saving riders from listening to a speaker telling me where to turn. I think I will take your advise. I have not signed up for the ride share and still have not figured that out by making different stops. So far it’s been taking a rider from point A to point B then say goodbye. So any suggestions I will welcome

So it direct me to another pick up in one minute as I turn on my hazard lights on to myself visible. As he saw me and run up to my car as he got in and told him this is a ride share. Mila M its reality. Taxi drivers are either 4x or 7x more likely to be murdered than any other profession is what I read after I had a bad experience driving for Lyft. I was surrounded by people yelling at me because I told them (underage teens) that I didn’t have enough seat belts to take them. They then proceeded to steal the stuff out of my car and I had to call the cops. -2nd week driving for Lyft. Oh and when I contacted Lyft they didn’t do anything or reimburse me for having driven there or deal with that because the “ride was canceled” idk if that parent that was using their app lost their account over it, but that’s besides the point. There is a heightened risk for your safety being threatened while driving random people .

    @@morland, I'm sorry for your negative experience as a new driver in the Taxi industry. It takes time to get some experience. Taxi driver's job is more dangerous than even working for Police Department because you never know if you return back home as you may end up in the accident. Speed cause accidents therfore always drive within posted speed limits. ALWAYS keep your doors locked at all times when you approach pick up location. Especially If you see a big crowd then make sure that all your doors are locked, then roll down slightly a window & ask how many riders will be getting into a vehicle before letting anyone into the vehicle. If they will give you a number more then you have available seatbelts in your vehicle then POLITELY explain in CALM VOICE the reason why you can't accept their ride request saying that commercial insurance doesn't allow. They will say that they will be charged cancelation fee, just explain & advice them that they need to order a bigger vehicle that will accommodate their party with enough of seatbelts. Talk in calm voice, be professional & diplomatic to DIESCALATE the situation. Don't open your doors & start slowly to drive away on a safe distance, choose option in the Uber App too many riders, make a report right away if they started to get aggressive toward you. Describe the situation in your report. Lyft App designed slightly different.
