Chino on Pink Maggit: "The song is meant to be triumphant. I'm trying to spread a little confidence. Lots of artists try to make songs for the kids who are tormented in school, telling them it's okay to be tormented. But it's not okay. Don't be ridiculed. Become the leader of your surroundings. Confidence is one of the most important things in life. If you are confident, you can do whatever you want"

Jupp. But I think it doesn't belong on White Pony at all. I mean, it actually isn't on it originally... and it shouldn't be. I really like the song, but it just doesn't fit in.

@Vesanic yeah, what's confusing is the quote from Chino. it sounds very much like he's taking specifically about Mini Magit/Back To School, though references Pink Magit. Mini leans full into that Nu Metal scene where Pink hides itself under your bed and sings hellish lullabies to calm your scars. I agree that as a solid album, Mini doesn't really fit, but if it's going to be anywhere, hitting you right out the gate to reprise at the end works pretty well, so kudos to the engineer responsible for that placement rather than a bonus track right after Pink.

Yup. Back to School wasn’t on the original release of White Pony (I bought it when it came out). Feiticeira set up the album much better as an opening track. If I remember correctly, they later re-released White Pony and rapped over Pink Maggit, calling it Back to School, which was released as a single. I thought Pink Maggit was better than Back to School and was a good closer to the album.

Truth. Back 2 School doesn't even fit in with the rest of the album. It sounds like it was recorded/mixed by a different studio. It just sounds out of place compared to the stellar mix of the other tracks, Feiticeira most importantly.

Here’s what Chino said in an interview about making this album: “The [band’s] move to Hollywood increased the partying that fueled the album. Cocaine and strippers being of particular interest. Some nights were super wild… [but] I wouldn’t say it’s a party record by any means. I think it has a sleazy vibe… that’s how we were living and it kind of crawled it’s way into the music.”

@@mollyesanborn Elite winning a Grammy is actually pretty ironic. Deftones were going to have a song played on the radio, but the station said that they wouldn’t play it unless they cut out some of the screaming, just said it sounded too harsh. There’s actually a video out there of Chino getting pretty worked up about it, pretty much saying that their music is going to be listened to how it was intended to be heard, and they’re not going to make any changes to something that they’re so proud of because a radio station said they should. Elite was intended to be a big middle finger to the station, hence why the song was screaming pretty much through the entire thing, and then won a Grammy for best metal performance

The true tracklist of this album doesn't start with Back to School- it starts with Feiticeira. B2S was tacked on a re-release of the album by the label to attract more album sales. They made that song after the album was completed. Thats why when you heard "Pink Maggit", it had the same themes/sounds/lyrics. I wish you got to experience the album without B2S tbh.

Besides that fact, I love how you notice lot of the dynamic sounds of deftones! They love making songs/albums that have this push and pull vibe. They love to blend the ugly and the beautiful. Heavy, but melodic. If you look into why they named their album OHMS, you'll see what I mean. If you want to experience more deftones, I highly recommend going in order from where you are. Their next album is considered one their "darkest" sounding albums. I feel like this is their "Pornography" (by The Cure). It also happens to be my favorite album.

The thing about Deftones that makes them so special and unique if how they mix opposites to make music that in theory would contradict and not work, but it ends up being a beautiful result. Every once in a while the band gets together and has this perfect synergy that makes some of the best music that I've ever listened to. Around the Fur, White Pony, Diamond Eyes and Ohms are all perfect examples. Their music tells a story of emotions with a sort of bounces between happy/energetic emotion with dark/heavy/sad emotion and the albums end up having a really nice flow. In fact I always opt to listen to the albums in full as compared to listening to a couple songs at a time here and there because of how the albums flow and the emotions you feel. Even Saturday Night Wrist being one of the less popular ones is brilliantly written and adding in a sense of mystery to it and a feeling like you never know what's gonna happen. Deftones definitely earns their spot as my #1 band of all time, they are on another realm in the music industry.

The best way to describe them is that they are the heaviest of heavy, and I’m not talking just sonically, but the emotional weight and undertone that permeates their music. And while every role each member plays compliments the total sound, Frank Delgado’s contributions to the soundscape and textures is the icing that makes it ethereal and other-worldly

Hey, I just found your channel and immediately subscribed as I saw this video ^^ welcome to the Deftones world, it's a magical place full of great music and great people ahahahahah I'm looking forward to see more Deftones reactions, every single album they made is great so you can't go wrong with any of them, but I think it would be cool if you listen to them in the same order as they came out, that way you can really see the evolution which, to me, is a huge part of Deftones' charm ^^

Hearing someone’s reaction as they listen to this the first time is refreshing and very.. trippy. Listening to their body of work in reverse must be a like discovering gold. I can’t imagine hearing the “faster” version of Passenger and getting used to that. But oh the joy and thrill of hearing a new to you artist, then dive in to their body of work is a feeling that’s hard to replicate.

Great reaction video dude! Root is the song that got me into Deftones, but boyyyyy when I heard Digital Bath, I was freaking hooked. Digital Bath is one of their all time best songs, easy. My favorite at the moment is Urantia from their new album. Song freakin shreds. I currently have Pink Maggit on repeat. The intro is so good. Anyways, keep up the good work 😁

I remember listening to this album when it first came out w some high school besties who I played in a band with. Our towns are about 13 miles away from each other and we were going to and from out on the "county" roads. Knife Prty played and I just closed my eyes and couldn't believe the sound of the part with the lady guest vocalist doing the shrieks and wails. I'll never forget that experience, it was so beautiful. Was already a fan of their two previous albums. They took it to a new level with white pony. Glad you listened. Nice reaction.

Yeah, "Back To School" does have that hip hop vibe mixed with rock (nu metal). "Feiticeria" actually means "sorceress" in Spanish. My absolute favorite song is "Rx Queen". My absolute favorite CD of all-time. The track "Teenager" is sad as all $#!+(!!!). Amazing upload!!!

Great video. Your insights are spot on. I'd like to see follow up videos to some of these albums where you dive into the lyrics if you think that's something you might be into. Chino writes his lyrics using a lot of metaphore and imagery and has a tendency to tell a story,, or set a scene, with his songs. This is a masterpiece album that never gets old no matter how much you listen to it. Staying power is something that all great albums have. Once you've listened to a lot more albums you will notice that the best ones you've heard will stay with you and stick out among the rest. Also, seeing as how we have the same (or very similar) taste in music I wanted to suggest to you the album *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* by The Smashing Pumpkins. It's not only considered their best album but is considered one of the best rock albums of the 90's. It's also hailed as the best double disc album ever made. It has a mixture of heavy, fast and darker rock songs along with beautiful, melodic slower songs that will give you chills. Overall it's a real masterpiece and a gorgeous album from beginning to end.

I actually have thought about doing analysis-type videos for each Deftones album. It's definitely something I'll consider! I agree, the lyricism Deftones uses is really interesting, they manage to set a very distinct tone for each of their albums. I will have to check out that Smashing Pumpkins album, sounds really intriguing.

Deftones is my favorite band and Digital Bath is my favorite song of all time. It's one of the only songs I rarely skip when it comes up on my playlists. I was in middle school when I first heard Minerva on the radio and went and grabbed the self-titled CD at Super Target. That album gets a lot of hate but it's still one of my favorites. If I made a list of my 5 favorite bands every year for the last 20 years, the other four bands would mostly change, but Deftones would've been on that list every time.

Well said. Digital Bath is one of my favorites from them as a band as well. This reaction is several years old now and I still listen to this entire album on the regular. There is something so distinct about Deftones that no other band has ever come close to replicating (at least for me personally). Easily my favorite band of all time since discovering their music.

And I thought I was the only one that was in love for the last song "Pink Maggit"! The tone, the atmosphere, it hits me stronger than the rest. But Knife Party, Digital Bath and even the track "Teenager" (that I personally love for the change of tone, so smooth) are also favorites on the album.

Fun Fact: Back To School wasn't the original opener to White Pony. The label wanted to have a more nu-metal/hip hop version of Pink Maggit. So they kinda forced the band to record it and then put it ahead of Feiticeira, which was actually meant to be the opener for the album.

i love Back to School, even if most people, including the band themselves, don't. They unintentionally made a bookending by re-using the Pink Maggit lyrics, making the album more cohesive as an unit, they also made a final track for their Nu Metal era, a farewell for their young selves (as this song does sound like juvenile rebellion). i don't consider this track the true opener of White Pony, no, it's more of a _track 0,_ It isn't setting the album's tone as Feiticeira does, but rather giving us a last taste of what Deftones _was_ before White Pony changed everything.
