My First Time Chasing Roosters | Covered Up In Pheasants!

Спорт

Pheasant hunting has always been something I've wanted to do but being from Virginia I never had the opportunity to chase them growing up. Luckily they're pretty plentiful in the upper Midwest so I took the chance last season to make a trip in hopes of bagging my first Minnesota rooster. I linked up with Bret Amundson during the midst of last year's freeze up in the hopes of chasing some waterfowl and pheasants around a part of the state that I hadn't visited yet. With fresh snow on the ground and some pups that were ready to hunt, we headed out into a thick cattail stand in search of some birds. The action kicked off quick and didn't let up for the entirety of our hunt, hope you enjoy!

    As a South Dakota resident and Pheasants as our state bird I feel like I am qualified to say, that when ur hunting pheasants try to not talk because they are very weary of humans and u talking tells them ur there and they spook a lot more

    It was a blast, I'd tried it a couple times before without dogs but hunting over those labs makes it a whole different experience. Hope you can point the truck towards SD or ND soon and take the trip, it's a heck of a time chasing them around the prairies!

    Love me a good pheasant hunt. Grew up walking the fields while my grandpa, dad, and uncles hunted. Sadly we don’t have wild pheasants in Indiana to hunt but dnr does do a good job giving you access to put n takes and since that started I have noticed more pheasants in the fields that have made it out alive. Great video and change of pace!

    Nice stuff Thomas ! Looks like the snow and cold has reached your area of Minnesota. The snow and cold hits here this weekend. Our phez opener was this past Saturday. Still lots of corn up but they are cutting like mad this week! It's going to be fun. Looking for the first signs of migration ahead of this frontal passage this W/end.

    Hey Thomas, you could use your labs to hunt pheasants. Train them to stop on a whistle so you can keep them in range. They will naturally hunt and they already retrieve real well. I've had a couple of labs that loved to hunt with the spaniels and were /are pretty good.

    Rue and Bonnie have actually done a good bit of pheasant hunting but I am hoping to introduce my pup Leroy to it this fall! Do the spaniels point the birds and then the labs come in to flush them?

  • @stevehugo3133

    @stevehugo3133

    They are English Springer Spaniels which are flushing dogs that also retrieve very well. The labs are just along because they really enjoy it and are pretty handy. The spaniels are whistle trained to keep them in range, as are the Labs.

    Here in Calif the farming practices changed and most of the wild birds are gone. I have gone on a lot of released bird hunts but when I got the chance I went after the wild birds. I can no longer walk so all upland hunting is a thing of the past for me. I'm living in thick Quail country though. I see the birds most every day but no longer hunt them.
