Flipped Kayaks & Huge Flocks | Early Season Goose Hunting 2022
Спорт
On opening day of the 2022 early goose season here in Virginia we kicked things off by heading out to the river to do some kayak jump shooting. This style of goose hunting allows us to cover a lot of water, do some fishing, and scout some spots out for duck season, all while hunting geese. It's typically an easy going hunt but between the incredible numbers of geese we saw and a flipped kayak, things got pretty chaotic throughout the morning. We were still able to finish up the day with a few limits of honkers and plenty of funny memories to look back on. Hope you enjoy!

Best waterfowl content on KZread. No 100 thousand dollar setups or leases, just a couple guys enjoying the outdoors and killin it literally. Good stuff Thomas.

Thanks Caleb! I really appreciate it! One day a duck lease would be nice to do some habitat management on but I'm perfectly happy sticking to the public land and private permission stuff for now!

I agree, the goal is to have fun first and hopefully catch it on film. Instead of going out and trying to create content, just capture what naturally appears.
“Ahhh… I could use a little help!” Lol. I’m jealous! I haven’t had time to get out yet.

MY DREAM ENVIRONMENT
I enjoy your videos and the example you set for others (picking up empty shells, taking ethical shots, searching hard for downed game, etc). Shooting from a seated position on a kayak in the current can be tough, but looks like you guys managed that pretty well! In the video, you mentioned struggling to find your lead. From looking at the shot cam footage on some of the missed shots, it looks like you are slowing your swing down as you pull the trigger. I’ve struggled in that area and I’ve seen an improvement in both my shooting percentage and quality of hits by really emphasizing “swinging through the shot.” Doing that really helps to get that shot string where it needed, out in front of the birds. I’m no expert, just something that helped me and could possibly help others too.

Thanks for watching Kevin, spot on shooting tip too! I really started focusing on that last season and saw a big improvement as well. This year I'm having trouble getting back into that habit but hopefully I'll have it ironed out here soon!

Great video guys, from one old goose hunter to another, you know how to have some good fun, caught some fish and shot some early Canada geese! I really enjoyed and thanks for taking us along, there are alot of geese where you are at, I've never been in a kayak, but bagged geese in a Canoe over the years, keep em coming 🇺🇸👍P.S. those shotgun cameras are Awesome!

I just ran across your channel about a month ago- great stuff! I used to hunt ducks and geese fairly frequently on the Pamunkey in King William, but I haven't had access to that property in years. I won the lottery drawing for the hunt at Hog Island WMA this year (great place, BTW), and I've gotten the bug to start waterfowl hunting again, but you just about need a law degree to hunt east of 95 what with all the blind laws, so I'm thinking out places I could try west of there, and your videos are giving me lots of ideas.
Keep it up man ! Great video good shooting best of luck as the seasons go on!

OMG, what a great hunting video. Get yourself a waterproof box/bag for your shells and other types of equipment. I learned it the hard way last year, no more soft bags or water resistance bags. @@HokeOutdoors Ended up having to wait until Thursday. I forgot today was my daughters' first day of school.
I was preparing for a float hunt several years ago in Indiana. My friend and I took the canoe and poles for a float a month before the opener. He almost flipped the canoe with a mistaken stroke in rapids. Glad there wasn't a gun and it was still warm. I righted it just in time.

Man the first time I shot out of a pirogue down the bayou I thought I was gonna flip, my cajun buddies stand up in them and shoot. Flipping it sucks though but makes for a great hunting story. That Affinity 3 should be able to take on some water and be fine. You could even make a video about that. But floating down rapids shooting birds is like some sort of magical mystery tour lol, definitely not the kind of hunting style you can do here but it looks awesome.
@HokeOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Haha them folks down in LA sure are some wild ones. I can't imagine shooting out of my kayak while standing up, almost 100% certain that I would end up in the water. The Affinity doesn't mind a little water, but if you get it soaked the action definitely slows down some. I'm going to make a full review video on it at the end of this season

I like all the boulders. What river is this?
I always enjoy your videos, especially float hunts. I do cringe sometimes at the chances you take with a loaded kayak in the rapids, rocks and sweeps of your river. A couple of those situations could have been life threatening dangerous if your buddies were too far away to help. Brother I do hope you live to be 68 like me!!!
@HokeOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Larry! The river can certainly be dangerous but I do my best to respect it's power. The overloading of the kayak in this one was an oversight. I think all I had to do to remedy the situation was reorganize my gear to distribute more weight to the back but I didn't realize how front heavy I was until the end of the hunt
Nice video
When you float into something in moving water lean into it as much as you can, then the water will push under you rather then pull your edge under.
