Layout Hunting Divers in Michigan with Steve Rinella | S1E04 | Duck Lore
Спорт
While the “U.P.” doesn’t have the puddle duck hunting of The Great Plains, in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge can be found some of the best diver hunting the Great Lakes have to offer. In this episode of Duck Lore, Sean is joined by MeatEater’s Founder Steven Rinella and local Michigander Dylan Graves. Neither Steve or Sean have hunted layout boats before, and they learn quickly that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

As Spencer pointed out on the podcast, 10% of your viewers tend to be new. Therefore introductions, however redundant, are still useful even for those few

Steve I only started watching your shows about 6 months ago. I’m 62 and love hunting whitetail deer and hogs in Georgia. I have watched a lot of other hunting shows you are the most down to earth person you explain everything how to gut, skin cut up the meat and pack it out!!! Your cooking episodes are off the chart!!!! I dont know why steve is so entertaining. He has a style that is larger than life, yet is understated. Like he isnt trying hard. Just hard to nail down

Excellent!! I have hunted some of those exact same spots in the past. It is always a crap-shoot on the water, but you guys were at ground zero of some of the Upper Great Lakes best diver staging areas. I have seen them so thick alongside the Bridge that they defied being counted. The last fall I was there it was mid December and I saw, literally, tens of thousands of birds on that "cove" off the N.E. corner of the Bridge. Most of them Redheads, but a bunch of Canvasbacks and Scaup, (both types) as well the other usual suspects. I really enjoyed this ride-along guys, thank you.

Sounds nearby to Mackinac Island? NE of the bridge? Great place to visit, definitely a gem here in the good Ole Mitten!
That 2 for 1shot was something else. Great work dude.
The Mighty Mac in all of its glory. Great video.
And I thought my romp in the swamps was work! Mad respect for those of you that hunt seaducks this way
Good episode. This is a bucket list for me.
I absolutely LOVE layout boats. My favorite type of hunt
my favorite waterfowl hunts are layout bufflehead beatdowns on lake st. clair. the place is packed full of em!
Nothing better than seeing the sky turn black with birds on the first morning of a multiple day hunting trip. Thanks for showing us Michigan bird hunters some love
The two birds with one stone was absolutely filthy 🔥
I've done a lot of diver layout hunting on Lake Erie, I love self filming it and it's such a fun way to hunt ducks. It's definitely humbling, but once you get used to the boat and shooting it's a blast. Great video covering our favorite way to hunt divers!
Certainly a challenging way to hunt ducks.Got seasick just by watching, lol.Hats off to those who hunt this way ,that's for sure. Thanks for a great show, from Australia
GREAT tutorial episode!! During the past several decades, we always saw large rafts just east of the Mackinaw bridge. Never many west of the bridge.
I love how Steve was going on about all the military history of the Straits. Same thing goes through my mind whenever I head up that way.
Ok now let’s see Steve make a decent meal outta them divers cause I’m yet to figure that one out
Ugh I was hoping for Steve’s cooking on this one! Damn
im enjoying this series. more waterfowl pls.
Chesapeake Bay hunter here !!!!! Loving the show !!!!
Love these videos😁👍🦆
It's true..You can't compare it to any other hunting. Diver Hunting is an animal all it's own..Been Diver Hunting on Erie since I could walk.. Diver Hunting is a way of life up here in LP Ontario Canada. Great to see our brothers south of the border smashin' em up. Great Vid Steve
Another great episode. Keep up the great work.
Great vid guys, love it
Brilliant stuff guys
Thinking the bridge hunt might be a tad more congested next season. Time to utilize PLAN B : )
That 2 for 1 special was great!
Great job guys❤👌🏻💥💥
That is a very cool way to hunt!
Still haven't got myself a duck yet. I guess I still have to live the whole experience through your eyes my friend. Keep following your nose boyz! From your Canadian friend Up North.

If they are close enough to see your camo they should be already dead, that’s the rule I’ve always lived by
Lay out hunting is by far the hardest duck hunting you can do. Trying off Lake Erie is even worse lol but fun
Gotta love Michigan 💕💕💕
2 words: Long Point! Best reds and blues and Cans you’ll get in layouts! (Ok, maybe Mitchell’s Bay, also)… :).
just wanna say if it wast for the bear grease and meat eater podcasts id go crazy
I'd fall asleep laying in that boat.
I have never duck hunted, but going up to the UP of Michigan for my first hunt might be my next vacation hunt outside of Missouri.

Sean acting like he saw the ducks when the camera man pointed them out for him. LOL
Thankful for any content, and would love to see a meal at the end.
Would've given a thumbs up with not just a catch but a catch and cook!!
Welcome to the or back to the U.P. Boys I should say. Divers have been so streaky these last couple years when it comes to staging times streaky migrating times not as consistent then in the past for all of them for sure. More of a trickle effect then a solid consistent push like in years prior. The mild weather this year didn’t help by any means and saw big numbers early to mid November. Hope to see you boys up here again soon ! Shoot straight 🤙🏼
Duck down let’s gooo
Love to see Steve
Nice just wished we were in the Fly Zone here in Florida. Enjoyed it
Please do a behind the scene for the Netflix series. It's perfect for KZread.
Lake Michigan actually does have a good population of Oldsaqua and some scoters

That'd be a lifer for me , long tailed don't usually frequent the central flyway but I can dream , oldsquaw probably bad spelling
One really doesn't need a "layout boat" to layout hunt. We've hunted in open-water from an anchored 3-man camouflaged fishing boat for over fifty years with absolute GREAT successes. We always set the decoys at a maximum of 40-yards (furthest decoy). A high profile boat will not spook divers. True, it was awkward to retrieve downed-ducks at times never having a tender boat, but we always managed.
Cool seeing the Mighty Mac in the background
i wish i could go duck hunting..with all the effort people put and $ into duck hunting.. those ducks must taste good

13:07 love how the duck is still alive after being netted lmao that is wild
Cool hunting 😎
God I won’t forget the morning me nd buddy went and parked by the lake an watched the same thing just wave after wave of just thousands of ducks was absolutely beautiful lol
I wish you guys would cook some up at the end of the episode!
Yes in fact I was stood on shore and said I need to get out in the middle out there. And I built my duck boat and started stacking em. I mostly solo hunted and I had some fine days bobbling around in my 15ft boat in 3ft waves.
That’s about an 80s model Johnson. Well, they were real similar for a long time. We stuck a full lower unit from I believe a ‘79 on a ‘98.
Someday! I want to do this someday! The thing that happened to these guys is exactly why I never have. I can go find birds or switch to pheasants if it isn't happening at home. On a trip like this all the eggs are in one basket.

Once you go once you’ll be hooked, find a reputable guide with good gear on a flyway and you’ll be hooked for life
ALWAYS have a lifejacket within EASY reach!😊
Where’s the cooking at? Great series besides missing some awesome recipes
Didn’t know you could hunt near the bridge
You guys were pretty close to castle rock 👍👍
Eu gosto de seus vídeo de caça sou Brazil
4:35 I saw something very similar years ago I was surfing Montauk point alone I think it was in the fall I remember I had my wintersuit on.
Super excellent raids and well-aimed shots. I like and subscribe!!! I will be glad to see you on my channel
Will the next episode include actually cooking and eating mergansers, scoter, and oldsquaw? Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful birds but I would rather eat fish and shellfish than a duck that consumes them. You are what you eat! I do commend you on the series though, well done!

I make them into pepperoni. I actually think the gamey taste helps, weirdly. But they also get "diluted" with other ducks too.
Wing & Bill as the old guys say , most effective way of killing Eiders and Scoters

I hate to be that guy but my only problem is the amount of shells left floating in the water. They will eventually wash up on shore or sink. When I go to a field, I hate seeing other hunters shells everywhere. Last dove season I fired 150 shells and I picked up every one of em. They don't degrade they just breakdown into smaller pieces. The wads are enough, unless you get fiber wads, at least pickup shells.
I can see our cabin in the video where we hunt out of to go for divers
I love the meat eater waterfowl hunting! Thanks for making this video
15:50 there’s a duck lower left screen popped up right by the boat
My first waterfowl hunt in the mid 70's was in St Martins bay which is just east of that same area. Next time come down to Saginaw bay for both divers and puddlers.

Hunted the Bridge Crotch? That’s some serious scouting there lmao.
Looks like y'all saw a bunch, too bad that you weren't able to convince them to get close. Hunting big water is tricky.
Lived up here in Northern Michigan my entire life I hunt but I didn't know people did this
Born and raised in Michigan, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, would love to try this someday.
Nice stuff but do you collect the floating empty shells?
Heard them scoters are delish , never killed one but might do a trip next fall , it aint tgat bad as far as prices are concerned i mean any waterfowl hunt will be a couple grand so ...
What is the best/recommended way to dispatch one that isnt fully out when retrieved?
Can't imagine the fuel bill with that Johnson 120. Good runner though!
Who else was waiting for a cooking scene at the end because Steven Rinella was on? Hahahahaha
Welcome to the great lakes! haha
I almost died in a layout boat once cause the guys I was with anchored bow and stern too tightly and the chop swamped the boat. Luckily they saw me waving and picked me up before I sank too far!

question: do the bullets have a chance of hitting cars or people?
@thermonucleardevice

No. They're using nontoxic shot, probably steel #2s. They run out of energy pretty fast, probably put out an eye after 75-100 yards but not much more. Individual pellets have about as much energy as a BB gun. Hunters stack up pretty close at Fish Point, usually less than 150 yds apart when the ducks are flying. never heard of an accident.
