Montana Black Bear Hunting with Clay Newcomb | S1E01 | On the Hunt

Спорт

Janis heads deep into Montana’s backcountry with Clay Newcomb in search of a black bear. Clay brings his mules across the country to get them deep into the mountains, which leads to an early sighting and an opportunity at Janis’s first ever bear.

The shot, the tracking, the animal unfound, and the reaction afterward could easily have been left out of the episode and we would have been none the wiser. The honesty of the gut-punch that is losing wounded quarry is a very important part of hunting, and I really appreciate the time being devoted to it.

It hard to give up on an animal you drew blood on. If it hasn’t happened to you yet you haven’t been hunting long enough. I’ve only hunted whitetail it took 12 years before I didn’t retrieve one. In my mind and in my heart I know that deer didn’t go to waste. All the forest consumed it. I put it out of my mind with this, the one that got away. We’ve all had that monster fish throw the hook just beside the boat 😖. Great show you guys. Thanks for keeping it real and showing what happens to all of us.

And it doesn't feel good when you know you've hit & injured an animal but didn't kill it.. the animals now likely to either starve from not being able to hunt or, it won't be able to protect itself from other predators.. it happens allot with bear though.. they're just so massive , thick skinned and survive some crazy shots !

Bears are tough to kill, small vitals and don’t bleed much which leaves very little wiggle room especially with a less than perfect shot from a rifle. Ive harvested many and a firm believer in using rage hypodermic broadheads which leaves a blood trail even a blind person can follow. On less than perfect shots with that broadhead, I still get tons of blood to follow for hundreds of yards. It’s a 100% success rate since I’ve switched.

I successfully stalked within 20 yards of a bear this spring, and, in the moment, i forgot my .308 was sighted in at 200 yds and skipped a round right over the bear's shoulders. The bear flinched and ran straight down a steep ravine towards a creek. My nephews and I searched for 15 hrs over the next 3 days, including 5 hrs with a blood trailing dog. I never found that bear. I understand how you feel Jani. I was lucky and got to see that same bear, with his new haircut courtesy of yours truly, walking the same ridge that I stalked in on. The relief I felt was immense, as the weight of guilt slipped from my shoulders. I hope to see you in the NW Montana bear woods at some point. Perhaps we could both find redemption together.

Steve! In this video you are within 1000 yards of the world record larch tree! I recognize the trailhead and background. If you want I’ll take you to it!

I noticed that both Clay and Janis have an add-on to their binocular case that allows for a revolver to be chest carried as well. Is this a Vortex accessory? Did they just do a little basic home modification? I'd like to adapt this and take some strain off of my belt.

Janis, what cartridge and bullet was used? That sure looked like good shot placement at that angle. My only thought is that the bullet broke up in the shoulder before it entered the vitals.
