Track IR is great for looking into the apex. It really gives you the benefits of VR minus the depth, with no hit on performance. Looking forward to more Track IR content Dave 😊.

Track IR is all about how you set it up. I have used it for many years across many genres of pc gaming starting with flight combat sims and my now love, sim racing. It is essentially plug and play and you can use the standard setup for most things but becoming confident in the use of the profile editor is when Track IR comes alive. I have Track IR 5 with both types of reflectors. The clip is definitely better holding calibration more efficiently than the hat reflectors. The downside is the cable, which is a pita, but that is due to my rig situation. I use the cap reflectors taped to my headset for most of my racing and it's great. As I said earlier though it is all about setup and getting to know what and what you cannot do. In that respect it isn't new user friendly although once you understand how to do it it is so versatile. For instance in my sim rig racing setup I have actually disabled the up and down axis's and have a large dead zone in the middle. This means I have a very stable look ahead when I am racing but just a quick glance to the sides gives me a better view than the left and right views in AAC at least. How much you have to move your own head to perform any of these actions is totally programable. You can set it up so a tiny movement to the left or right will pan behind you (check six in Combat Flight Sims) or have it on a virtually one to one basis, which is great for the realism buffs out there. Great bit of kit and I am surprised more don't speak about Track IR's merits in sim racing. One thing I will say compared to VR is that if you mount the reflectors on your headphone it helps massively with a problem that effects most sim racers in the summer months, heat. VR in my experience has the opposite effect and after taking the headset off after a session sometimes I am basically just a sweaty mess lol.

I was using TrackIR for years (now back to VR again) and love it. Certainly less is more and I've set it up so it's linear and slow in the center and accelerate if looking at the edges of the 49" to get full 180° if I want, even a bit more. I've never had the wish to "upgrade" the 49" to a triple-setup because it feels like triples if you can look around and never failed during a race. And the maximum vertical FOV is certainly bigger than any triple-screens available even it's quite limited compare to VR. The cap-reflectors are okay, but the TrackClip Pro is definitely worth it. It's more stable and needs no light source in front of you to reflect light. The downside is, it needs a 2nd cable and not much con for me, because I'm using tethered headphones anyway and fixing the TrackIR-cable to the headset cable is not a big deal. Both solutions don't like direct sunlight or reflections of sunlight from stuff in the room and both can fail if not using it in game for a while without TrackIR-restart, but far less with TrackClip Pro. The Cap-reflectors have the advantage that they don't change position if you leave the rig for some minutes while it's rather unlikely that you put your headphones on exactly the same as before, so last one needs more re-centering. Just don't forget to take off your cap if you go shopping😀

This is amazing for content creation. I have seen many racing videos on youtube and what almost every content creator forgets is that the final video has to look good for the people watching. Everyone turns off the in game steering wheel, they use some really small FOV or they use VR which on video is always off from the center of the car and is motion sickness inducing. Even big creators make this mistake like Jardier. I understand that people set their game and settings up in a way that is best for them but as a viewer I want to see what looks good for me. I would rather watch a less interesting video that looks good than some low FOV or VR mess. This video is perfect. The FOV is perfect, seeing the ingame steering wheel is great, and the little bit headtracking just gives it that extra immersion. I honestly wish every content creator made their videos this way.

I drive only in ACC, but even there shared view with few others trying out TrackIR and giving up on it due impression that it's more annoying gimmick then useful tool, due too shaky/nervous experience with default configuration that moved/shook all around .. and felt probably .. like what watchers of streams of game played in VR feel. I "fixed" it by customizing TR configuration for game - removed all redundant axis, leaving just turning left/right, no leaning/lifting/swiveling; - added some deadzone in mid to prevent any stuttering/vibration inevitable from head micromovements - at very beginning of turning made it at very slow race, that gradually increases the more i turn head - bound one of buttons on steering wheel to center view With TR configured this way i still able to steady turn view to apexes, do quick glances to sides/back, but in "main head turning angle" movements are steady/non shaky "head turning" where/how needed with no parasitic/unwished movements. At this point i can tell that TR is more help then annoyance (unlike with default curves/all axis enabled). Note: unfortunately if using TR in ACC, free views cameras not working anymore, i cannot detach camera from car anymore in replays or eg. when i work as team engineer looking after teammate. Heard that VR users have similar problem in ACC.

I cant race on a monitor anymore, triples might be okay, I haven't tried that. I use VR currently, its not so much the feeling of being in the car. It is the ability to use your head and be able to look through the turn so you can see the exit. For me that's the game changer.

Seems like a good replacement for vr on paper. Only way would be on tripple screens. It might help a little but your not going to be looking at your screen on a single idk i havent tested but I don’t imagine it would be worth it with a single screen

Never tried trackIR but might try in some day, just went strait to VR but I preferer my triples over VR mainly because of heat in summer and I can just jump into my rig with no head gear. I also think it would mess with my visual reference of the car rotation, I like to look to apex without the car interior moving across the screen.

I Love track Ir, once I tried it I could never go back. I Play on a single screen single curved monitor. It improved my awareness and driving a lot. Budget alternative to VR, and It allows me to stay in tune with the 'real world' in the house. The Hat set up yeah...looks 'cool', but I use the alternative set up that clips onto my headphones. So yeah...love track IR. Does take a bit of testing and tweaking to get the values just right, so you don't feel unnatural with movement. For single screen simmers it's a must have.

I had a knock off head tracker and never really liked it because of the device on my head. Thanks to you I bought one of these. Love it for my rFactor 2 racing as it just looks and works great. Wish all your videos used this instead of triples as just looks great Dave.

TiR still beats VR by miles for comfort and convenience, which is the main draw for me. So much easier to throw on a hat or pair of headphones and go than having to get a box on your head, get it calibrated, load up the software for it, then open the sim and blindly crawl through the menus without being able to see your mouse and keyboard. I hope one day VR is universally as easy as "pop it on and hit play"

  • @widerfov

TrackIR definitely needs to be set up correctly with the software. Too many ppl just slap it on and complain that you need to turn your head too much to look around and look side-eyed. You can make it so you barely move your head to look side-to-side (couple inches at most), and a little more to look over your shoulder. It will seem too sensitive at first, but you will quickly get used to it. I've used it for 10 years and has kept me from spending money on every VR headset to come out. Will upgrade to VR eventually though.

On 3080 9900k 32gb of ram I have FXAA on and run triple 1440p and this track at the start 20 cars I'm getting about 65 to 70fps but my image looks much crisper. Not trying to that guy just thought it may be worth you looking into it and check your cpu and gpu usage with MSI afterburner because you've had similar issues in the past I've seen in other videos. Something seems off.
