Who Am I?
I am a Management Consultant in real life but in my Bootlosophy channel, I make videos about boots and all things boot related. This channel posts reviews of boots, unboxing of new boots, and follow-up reviews, and in doing so, may explore the philosophy of the brands from time to time!
I have owned boots for decades, but to be honest I have owned them as functional pieces of footwear. It wasn't until early 2020 when COVID struck that I started online shopping for boots to an obsessive degree. I love the aesthetic of boots and I love finding out more about how they are made. I now own an insane number of boots, and one day I may sell some of them (just not right now).

Great comment about the boots' design intentions vs. actual usage. Too many boot reviewers focus solely on the construction and materials of the boots, without discussing how end users would be using them.

*American here* $300 AUD is an amazing deal, especially for Nicks resale value. It looks like that Robert is a custom configuration based off the fact that they have all eyes instead of their standard option, hooks + eyes. Not to mention that they are bound to be even more expensive because it is using veg tan bridle leather. Personally, I am a huge fan of the the PNW school of boot making and love the heel and overall CHONK of the boots. A fantastic video and I look forward to watching another.

Thanks - great comments and review. I have a pair of Nicks work boots and wear them regularly to work a garden store)I have come to really appreciate the overall construction and particularly the arch support. Never have my feet felt better at the end of the day. You’re absolutely right though - they are not dress boots or even semi-dress. Casual maybe? Sometimes? All that being said the more I wear them, the more I want to wear them because they are so dang comfortable. Hope you enjoy yours and find excuses to put them on. You never regret it!

PNW boots of this style are absolute monsters! I love my Nicks and I’m hoping to add a couple more pairs to my kick around rotation as soon as I can triple check with them what size I should get in their slip on style. I hope you get the chance to really wear these in wherever you find the time to walk around in a pair of tanks

I bought a pair of Nick's August 2022 and received them this March 2023. A James model with a dodder heel. 8" with speed hooks in chromexcel (more than twice the cost you paid). $300 Aussie in the condition you showed and without the waiting is a steal! I'd buy an exact copy of mine for that price just to have a spare (and probably any other that fit me). The tall heel and bulging heel counter is definitely bold. I had similar thoughts about this style, but they work so well in their role It has been an easy adjustment to accept that the design choices just make sense. Enjoy them!

Very well put video sir! Love my Roberts in the 64 brown work leather but I wish I would sprung for the W&C leather. I got my Robert with a lower dogger heel. Some cool history info, Nick continued to work for the company even after he sold the company.

I absolutely love the PNW style of boots. I suppose I am a bit more adventurous and wear my Robert boots to work in my office. Office casual? 100%. I did get mine with the 5/8"-3/4" heel stack, so a bit less tall than yours. But, with that same awesome arch support that must tried by true boot enthusiasts. I have a pair of White Sherman boots on order and looking forward to being able to compare these two Spokane icons. Great review, Teik!

The high heel helps when walking uphill, giving the back of your foot a little more height. The dogger heel is curved at the back so that the heel will not catch when walking downhill. . I think Nick's boot grease is Obenauf's too. Obenauf's is made not too far from Spokane, in north Idaho, Peck, Idaho. And yes, Viberg counts as a PNW boot.

If I was going to spend five and a quarter on a pair of boots, I wanted the toughest boot I could find. I opted for the Builder Pro in 10 inches, if I was paying for it, I wanted as much leather as possible. I got the 1964 brown leather. Breaking them in took a while, nothing brutal though. Now they are the most comfortable boots I've ever owned. I wear them every day and don't feel fatigued wearing them. Initially I was concerned about the 10 inch height and the taller heel ( I got the moderate heel). No issues with either. The tall leather flexes, supports my ankle, but doesn't inhibit movement at all. The heel doesn't really even feel like a high heel. You are standing on so much leather. Once it forms to your foot, it's like wearing thick, supple leather gloves, but on your feet. The sizing is challenging. Normally I wear 10, or 10.5, 11 in some hiking boots. In Nick's Boots I have 9 1/2 C. They felt tight, but it's all part of breaking in. I live in Spokane, so I was able to go in to the shop and they measured my foot at 11 different places.

A work of art! I have the Nicks Roberts boot in waxed leather and I find it is very comfortable. The heel and arch took awhile to get used to. But, it does take much of the weight off the ball and front of my feet. I feel much less pain in my feet now than with any other boot and I have several. I think they look great, of course I live in the Pacific NW, around the Seattle area.

Nick's seem so much more of a workers boot than a casual dress boot. They are one of the world class makers of boots. Not sure I will ever buy a pair. I have issues finding a model that seems to fit my casual perception. Thanks for sharing. UPDATE: FF 7 months. i own 2 pair and I'm about to order my 3rd pair. The MTO Heritage are perfect boots. The Robert / Americana / Charley and Falcon are all Heritage boots. These models have some predefined configurations. In the MTO you define all to your liking. Cheers on the great work as always and much love from Canada! 🇨🇦

Great review. The only thing missing is not going more in depth about the lasts. Not all of their boot lasts have such a tall heel. The MTO, made to order, boots allow you to order the boots with a lowered heel. Their HNW last has far less aggressive heel. Their ThurmanHNW last is very similar to an Iron Ranger.

The difference between cowboy boot heel and dogger heels is the cowboy heel is much narrower and for working in stirrups, where dogger heels were developed for rodeo steer wrestlers (bulldogging) who if using cowboy boot the narrow heel tends to break off when digging the heels in the dirt to stop the steer and the bulldoggers also wear lace up boots that won't get pulled off while wrestling the steer. Logger heels are wider than both cowboy and dogger to give more traction on wet logs.

A few precisions: I think this toe is unstructured and if it is, it is with Celastic toe; Nick offers many shapes of toes, their default one is #3; you have been very lucky because those boots price is $729 US with this leather. Personally, I feel a soothing push on my arch when I slip into them, but only for a minute, then I simply feel supported.

i was told the logger heel is so if you get in a little deeper mud its easier to get you heel out. it curves in leaving an air gap that makes easier verses a heel that can get locked in.

Many people say that they ordered same size Nicks like their Red Wings. My Red Wings are 10.5D and they are very comfortable after braking. But it looks like the width should be E. I ordered Roberts width E, hoping that they will fit good. I don’t know if Roberts fit narrower or wider compared to Red Wings.

It's nice you had someone else break them in, but bridle leather isn't all that hard to adapt to. I own a few pairs of logging boots, and each one took probably 10-15 all day wearings to get over the crest of break-in. So painful. They are for walking in rough country. The Robert is a boot that doesn't know what it is, which is why you don't know what to do with it. You'll get used to the heel. I have come to like it, as it really does a better job of being comfortable to walk in when you're not on flooring or the street. Congrats!

Given that these boots are heavy with quality leather, they probably wouldn't be easy to hike in. The old adage was that a pound on the foot was equal to three(?) pounds on the back. Classic Camper, Horace Kephart observed that feet were raised and lowered thousands of times in a day of hiking. Multiply that by two feet working and then by the extra weight in this type of boot and my eyes popped!

I believe this style of boot is often purchased by those who admire the Pacific Northwest lifestyle throughout American history. Everything about it is masculine and rugged in a forestry, big woods, mountaineer kind of way. That image is sought after by such people, even though they're may not be engaged in that particular lifestyle where they now live because of what it represents. They want a piece of that, and what better piece of accent wardrobe would add that any better than a pair of Roberts? I'm in Cincinnati and I'd buy a pair in a heartbeat if I had the cash. In my opinion, they're dead on perfect and their reputation backs it up. It's a "mans" weekender boot.

A bit late to comment.. but Welcome to Nick's! They are so sturdy, I have 2 pairs (along with a few pairs of White's and Wesco), I'm a native Pac.NW resident so I've purchased mine direct, gone in for a custom fittings, etc. all of the Pac.NW boot brands have aged well, I've resoled a few and done a full rebuilding on one pair. They are nearly indestructible in terms of the average person's wear. They only get better with age, as long as they are reasonably cared for. Good point about the quality, these are 100 year old style boots for people who were working in them .. they are made to last a lifetime. Their origin is a working boot, made for heavy duty use and wear ... super over kill for the average office worker who is not likely to take them off road. I would disagree a bit on break in with Nick's generally, I think that is really sort of individual to the boot and the individual, I think your point about prior break in on these and a really good fit for your foot is key. Brand new off the shelf... often the experience is that ... break in is not for the faint of heart ... being all leather, being of heavier thickness leather than most casual/dress brands, depending on the leather (for example Bison is like butter, it breaks in almost immediately vs some of their work boots with 8oz leather can really be an epic break in) ... the break in on Nick's and other Pac.NW brands. can be into the 100++ hour range ... so if you take the plunge and haven't experienced these types of boots be ready to put in some quality break in time before you really experience the true fit of the boot. You got an amazing deal on the boots btw...
