    Man that is one sexy sword. I particularly love sideswords. So question, when using this sword and you had the option to use anything in your off hand (not including guns and stuff), what would you use? if a shield or dagger, what type?

    +Shadiversity I'd personally go with a buckler or a parrying dagger - probably the buckler because while it largely negates the need for such comprehensive hand protection, it is still a better parrying implement than a dagger. That is, if I actually had any skill in using sword and buckler.

  • @Parker8752

    @Parker8752

    8 жыл бұрын

    Actually, it was relatively common as hand protection on swords improved - at least in a civilian environment. The buckler was pretty much the largest shield a person would carry in a civilian context because it was the largest shield one could comfortably wear - but a dagger is more comfortable still, and with the advances in hand protection it was typically sufficient for the task. Again, however, that's only in a civilian context - in a military context, by that point, the sword was merely a backup weapon and was most commonly used by itself as a last resort.

    +Honudes Gai They were dagger specifically designed for it, with strong blades, large quillons and side rings to protect the hand. They were adopted for use with the rapier primarily because of the difficulty in parrying and retaining a thrusting blade with a buckler.

  • @FeijSmoothie

    @FeijSmoothie

    +Shadiversity The general rule is If you know your opponent is going to be using a thrust centric sword, bring a dagger. If you're up against something heavier like a longsword or a backsword, bring a buckler. The sidesword was designed to be a rapier that was a bit more versatile in a calvalry melee (since it has a broader blade able to give better cuts than a rapier). Considering the time period and purpose of development tho, I would go for the dagger if it is for civilian use. If you bought one during the timeperiod of it's development, you would be buying a sword during the hayday of Rapier and Dagger usage (the mid 16th century). If you use a buckler in a rapier fight, the buckler will deflect a thrust but you can't lock out a blade like a dagger can. You'll essentially be working twice as hard as a dagger user because you'll keep having to deflect every thrust like a crazy person, while the dagger user can just slide the rapier's blade away and keep it out of reach. ------ You could negate this by using a bigger buckler but the problem is that a big shield blocks a lot of visibility. A rapier user could stab you in the leg like an asshole and you'd rip out a tendon or bleed out like an idiot (Good luck with Renaissance healthcare).

It seems to be based off of a historical find in Munich and it is one of the most aesthetically pleasing sword designs, (for the record I am usually a Katana guy, we aren't all nuts... tharrock337 why rapiers? This is why i love sideswords. They are like rapiers but as you know that cutting is considered badass by the pop culture. Funny because thrusting in real life was too op. You need to contact your sword with enemies blood vessels and hes out. Thats it, infection starts and its very hard to heal him even by todays standarts.

  • @tharrock337

    @tharrock337

    8 жыл бұрын

    Shrekas 2 I don't really know where my obsession comes from, but I have an idea. First of all, I just love the shape (talking about sexy swords, I just talk about looks, not about functionality but I do feel rapiers are excellent dueling weapons anyways). So skinny light but with incredible reach. Plus they have had the mist elaborate guards I have ever seen and I love me some overdesigned handguards. Also I think part of the reason I love rapiers is my DSA charackter. So idk if you know but we german nerds love playing a pen and paper rpg called Das schwarze auge (the black eye) and its pseudo medieval fantasy. We got high fantasy elements such as orks and elves and all kinds of magic but it leans more in the direction of a song of ice and fire than lord of the rings. So as a result you better pick a weapon that suits your charackter because there is no way my charackter (a female human thief) could wield a shield as effectively as a male charackter. Without specifically training for exactly that all her life at least. So I did some reasearch and looked up some historical fighting styles and rapier plus dagger was not only apparently highly effective but to me just beautiful. the movement just fit the charackter I created perfectly. Also the things just look so damm superior. All the curved metalpieces on the guard and thin blade just scream arestocracy and rennaisance to me. I sure love rennaisance. So I guess these three things are what made me fall in love with the weapons. First of all I just happened to have a thing for the shape naturally, secondly the fighting style fits my dsa charackter like no other and last but not least the weapon has an upper class rennaisance vibe to it that I just can't resist.

    In some countries, until the blade is sharpened it isn't considered to be cold weapon. Maybe that is the reason they are sold unsharpened; i.e. to avoid problems at the customs. Besides, if they straight up tell you that the blade is dull, I see no problem.

Having said that, there is a debate as to what constitutes "sharp." Everyone has a different notion on this topic.

    This is probably my favorite sword type. It looks very nice, it gives a decent amount of hand protection, it's very versatile, lightweight, could be used for a variety types of attack. And overall seems to be a pretty effective weapon, especially with a buckler. And of course easy to carry.

    never heard of a side sword before this, thanks for the education. the one you have looks bad assed. I always liked the aesthetics of rapiers and Japanese swords. but rapiers always seemed impractical to me. side swords seem to have a good mix of rapier speed and still having some cutting power. keep the good vids coming Skal!

    Eee! A favorite of mine in terms of form and function; cut-and-thrust blade combined with hand protection and plenty of control surfaces. The balance on that is particularly sexy, and the overall effectiveness of such a design is second only to a Schiavona in my view. Thanks for the first glance, it's wonderful to see more transitional blades getting love. I'm far too partial to Vladimir Cervenka's Schiavona and Swiss Saber to make this a top choice, but it's definitely going on the watch list for the future.

    I'm curious -- with that guard and the quillon, can you do the kinds of false-edge cuts one might use to get around shields? Or does the guard interfere with the wrist, when you give it that much torque?

    In one of my physics classes in engi school I learned the equation for kinetic energy. It is k=(.5)(m)(v^2). Notice how the velocity in the equation is squared, meaning that velocity increases the kinetic energy much faster than the mass. So the ability to swing at greater velocity usually outweighs(get it) the negatives that come with less mass. Of course it depends on what you are trying to cut, with harder targets you will need more mass on a single point. There is also a balance that is necessary because having too little mass would also negate the high velocity.

    Skall, in your dual wielding video there was mention of rapier and dagger. I have heard of rapier and dagger techniqus and styles, but what about arming sword and dagger? Is there any historical evidence for this being used? And if not, do you think it would still be practical and/or effective?

    That is such a beautiful blade. Coinicidentally, I just recently gained interest in side swords and that would look like the perfect choice if I bought one. Does it come with a scabbard? Plus, I say it would be more accurate to say that its more between a rapier and a broadsword considering that each of this are developed from the sidesword to specialize in either thrusts or cuts.

    not quite the side sword from dark souls 1, god I miss that thing, but pretty nice. Question for you Skallagrim, or anyone for that matter. if you were going up against someone using a larger, heavier 2 handed blade or a hand and a half sword would the one handed and lighter build of the side sword make blocking or deflecting strikes from these heftier blades more difficult or could you still effectively defend yourself without worrying about being overpowered and battered through (assuming suitable competence from both parties).

    Looks very nice indeed. One concern I have is that I find many swords is that the quillion block is too large to comfortably use a (single) finger grip, and it's especially bad if the finger ring starts curving immediately (as opposed to going out straight and then curving towards the blade, or being attached a little further out on the quillion). Perhaps it's my small hands, but I find that such swords wedge painfully and uncomfortably between my middle and index fingers. This is my roundabout way of asking: *Is the finger ring spacious enough, and the quillion small enough, to be comfortable to finger this sword?*

    For you guys wondering, the side-sword was kind of a link between the one-handed double-edged straight sword and the rapier. It was born in Italy and Spain. Italians called it side-sword (spada da lato), Spanish called it Espada ropera, which can be translated to "clothes-sword". Don't ask. From the spanish name, the French altered it to "rapiére", which became "rapier" in English. That's why it isn't known that much, since it shares the same name as the "striscia" as Italians call the actual rapier. You can call it "cutting rapier" or "sword rapier" (TV Tropes wouls say "Redundancy Department of Redundancy"). Personally, I like the design, but I'm madly in love with longswords and "bastard" swords. But it's a sword I'd like to have. Sadly, Italy has too many laws, changing too frequently, and a guy who shoots at the criminals that are shooting at his shop, and involuntarily kills one of them, can be sued for murder. Where the hell is the legitimate defence, I ask. My question shall never be answered by Italy. So... what's the canadian region with the mildest climate? I think I wanna move...
