Got my Z9 a couple of weeks ago; as with you I'm struck by the AF's abiity to just find and hold the subject while I"m still thinking about it :) Purely magical moment of the squirrel and bird together on the mossy log! And refreshing to watch a video about the Z9 and hear it pronounced properly, ZED :)

I got my Z9 a few days ago. The EVF, 20FPS RAW, and autofocus performance are even better than I hoped. Fabulous camera!

Nice work! Everyone I know who's gotten the Z9 is equally impressed, even though we knew the specs and saw the launch videos. Still waiting on mine to come in, so it's great to see how others are reacting.

Trond, are you still using the Nikon 500mm F/4G ED VR? If so, how does it handle the incredibly fast frame rates of the Z9?

Very nice video Trond, That Z9 looks like an absolute beast of a camera. Would be very interesting to see how it goes when the 600 6.3 PF lens is released for the Z Mount. Even the adapted F Mount 500 PF is reportedly an incredible setup.

Next thursday my reseller organizes a demo of the Z9 combined with the crazy expensive new 400 2.8. Can't wait to get my hands on it and try that AF. Not having the money for the Z9 yet (,ot even talking about the 400 lol) but really intereted to see the jump it has created with the Z6 II.

Well you should get at least three times as many sharp photos than the Nikon D500 ! I have been amazed what you got out of the D500 ! BIF next ! I think you will be blown away by the Autofocus ! If it is anything like the Sony A1 ! Loads more keepers, lucky for you only 20 FPS ! (I believe with the Z9) ! Looking forward to even more amazing action shots and Birds in flight Trond !👍😍

The D500 is still a great camera, but this is another world for me :) Gonna be great to use it more for birds in fligh indeed :)

What Autofocus Mode were you using on the squirrel stills? 3D?

Hello Tround, It so good to see you out with the Z9. I known that I have one one order, but a quick question, How do you feel it handles ISO image for wildlife. As I have the Z7ii with a 500mm PDF and have been out a number of times shooting Dear in the mornings and am disappointed with the ISO. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy that Z9

Hello John! To be honest the ISO performance is not that good. I have not used the Z7 II, but I think its around the same as the D850 in noise performance. My Z6 II is way better. But of course with 45 MP I did expect this. But its not a deal-breaker for me, as I use topaz denoise with great results. Keep safe! Thanks a lot

Hi Trond Welcome to the fire and forget camera olymp! Nonetheless enjoy your Nikon Z9 (or an Sony A1 in my case), but once you had that kind of experience, you cant go back to a 'lower tier' camera.... Only a Z9 can be B-cam to a Z9... ;-)

Yes that seems to be quite hard to find video head with arca swiss support. At least for larger gear

@@harrisaari8551 Yes I agree. I use a Manfrotto video head which is not Arca-Swiss but I put on an Andoer Arca-Swiss quick release adapter that I bought on Amazon and that works really good!

It’s still a 24 megapixel camera and a 45 megapixel camera. The difference is probably exactly what you expect that it is.

Chopz Pwnz is right on his comment bellow. Its not a ISO beast. At first sight its performing the same as D850 on ISO. So its not great, but still not a dealbreaker. The Z6 II is remarkable on ISO.

I'm just hoping they will soon release an official release date for the 200-600mm lens because I'm sure a lot of other people must be waiting for that too. As I own no gear right now, I'm just thinking I might just pick up a used 200-500mm and just sell it when the 200-600mm is released. The 100-400 is of no interest to me personally.

Hey Trond. How did you find the eye AF on the red squirrels? I photograph them a lot and ended up using single point like on my d850. The eye detect was too unreliable for stills, pretty decent for video. For birds, however, the eye detect has been amazing

Hi Tristan! It was really good. It went straight to the eye. I use 3D tracking mode. And that worked great.

Endelig er ventetiden over :D Z9 på plass og virker for at den er til forventning ;) Det er noe som heter Rett verktøy til rett mann , så blir jobben gjort som den skal .. Gratulerer :D Kjekt å høre at det går bra med sønnen i huset :) Vi har hatt Covid her i huset i en uke nå.. 3 av 4 er smittet men det går seg vel til dette og :D

Apparently there's a depth of field issue highlighted by Hudson Henry Photography on all Nikon Z cameras including the Z9 where the depth of field does not go beyond f.5.6 on a f.2.8 lens.. Have you noticed this issue??

Really great pictures as usual! Extra nice with the Z9. Is it your own or is it on loan? Wish I could afford it... I use D4 and Z50 with 500 PF. Mostly Z50 nowadays. Interesting to see your future videos!

Thank you Ulf! It is my shop/work, who own it for demo. But I am so lucky to use it as my own as much as I like. Both great cameras the D4 and the Z50, and also an amazing lense that PF.

You captured some beautiful images here. As for testing the AF performance, these really weren't very challenging situations. Perhaps more in the future with busier backgrounds and moving subjects?

Yeah, nobody loses. Except the environment. Please Trond, don't jump on this NFT bandwagon.

I am really disappointed with the inconsistent autofocus of the Z9 with subject recognition (animals) turned on. Focus acquisition works fine but when it comes to tracking, the autofocus very often cannot hold up with the subject. Especially when the background is quite contrasty. The autofocus jumps then from the eye of the bird to something close by. For whatever reason. And this does not really depend on the setting or the lens, I use the Nikkor 600mm 4.0 FL and also Nikkor 180-400mm 4.0 FL. This is very irritating for a flagship camera. I guess the subject recognition of the Z9 is simply premature, definitely worse than what the Canon R5 delivers or the Sony A1. Not good yet.

You are in the minority then. Most people, including myself, find the focus tracking more than capable. Better than the D5, in fact. I haven't used the R5 or R3, but I've used the A1 and A9. It's better than the A9, and on par with the A1. What subjects are you shooting?

@@bradcofo Passerines. And I don’t care if I am a minority or not. Because that is a fact, it’s not only me who experienced this issue. Or better issues. Good for you if your are fine with it, I am used to a performance in animal eye autofocus what a Canon R5 is delivering and the Z9 is definitely not there yet. Also not on the same level as the A1. But I am sure Nikon can and will catch up, it requires Firmware updates most probably only for achieving this.

@@Stefan1968ful From my experience, as well as other whom I personally know and some others on forums and social media, the Z9 is just as capable at tracking fast moving subjects as the all of the other flagships. I am also used to the performance of the A1, and I'm not disappointed with the Z9. That seems to be the consensus among professionals I know who are also using the Z9.

@@bradcofo Well, I don’t want to repeat all this. I am mostly shooting Passerines and Short Birds. I just listed the experienced made. And not only by me. I understand also it’s a new system and it will take it’s time to make it perfect. The Z9 is an outstanding camera, no doubt. But for serious sessions and assignments I have where autofocus reliability is needed, I am currently not choosing the Z9. For reasons mentioned.

I am enjoying my Z6 and honestly never even considered the Z9, well there went that thought! Love the autofocus and tracking. Great Pictures and Great Videos
