    I think things might of been a little better for Pavarti if at 1st, she didn't say something like Russell was her pet, which may of not been wrong, but both heroes and villains saw Russell as something toxic, and she later had to say she needed him or she would of been out sooner, which is true, but if she had done a betterjob of selling that, that Russell is toxic, but was an unfortunate necessary evil to help her get to the end. And Sandra, here she was, for better or worse, said she wasn't a part of that, even going to say, when Russell said either you with me or against me, blatantly saying "I'm against you"

Rupert and i believe it was JT who gave Russell the idol, and when they found out they got tricked, they knew it was going to be embarrassing for them and the whole world got to see it. Parvati wasn't even allowed to play the game before the merge because of pre-game alliances (Russell coming in clutch to save her) and everyone targeting parvati since day 1. Jury was bitter that they got outplayed and was never voting them no matter what Russell said even if he acted like a complete angel.

There's too many variables, a hefty amount of luck, and too many different kinds of viable playstyles to be so black and white about it. What makes Russell a bad player isn't that he didn't win, but that he never grew or evolved. He never improved upon his weaknesses.

As for biggest heartbreaks, I have to say Devon Pinto. While I'm one of the like 6 superfans who actually think Ben deserved his win and was fine with it, Devon was easily the best player of the season. While he wasn't winning immunities or finding idols, he had a stranglehold on the game strategically. Creating the fliping alliance and telling Ben to be a secret agent (making Chrissy and Ryan more mad at Ben than at himself), to being able to integrate himself back with Chrissy and Ryan and cast the stray vote for Mike (one of the best moves I've ever seen), only to lose to a completely unpredictable factor...you hate to see it.

    Peridiam, my first crushing defeat is the godfather to yours. The first season I watched all the way through was All Stars. I was completely baffled as to why the puppetmaster of the season lost to the girl on his coattails. Of course, I also didn't have a full understanding at the time of how much out-of-game social capital Mariano had lit on fire after the swap (as well as throughout the game), least of all how that (at the time) confusing scene where Kathy chewed him out about it was meant to serve as an explanation to the audience for both the rage behind the jury speeches and the final outcome. All Stars is a weird season. In-game and out-of-game social dynamics were all tangled up. In retrospect, it makes perfect sense. It was the first returnee season and it was back when the Survivor community was very small. It really couldn't have been "just a game" for any of them, let alone for most. All I knew at the time it aired was that they gave the money to the girl in the real winner's shadow, just because they didn't like the puppetmaster lying to them about their positions before booting them. I get it now. Every social play that season was multi-layered, and the social game mattered to an extreme degree. Having had the "social game matters most" lesson pounded into my head that way, though, I never rooted for Russell when his first season was airing. I knew he was playing a deeply problematic game. I have mixed feelings about Natalie's win, but I definitely understand it. She was his Amber, in some ways: the shadow of the puppetmaster with less blood on her hands.

    I'm still so torn on the Russell Hantz situation in Samoa. Like you, I was a big fan of his and couldn't believe he lost at the time. In retrospect, it makes sense. However, it is more bitter when many of those jurors have said that, in retrospect, they wish they weren't bitter and had voted for Russell. It's funny because in many other seasons, Russell would have won. The jury wouldn't have been as bitter. A lot of people have won doing far less than he did to win. But, like you said, it's about navigating YOUR cast. Yes, it sucks if they favor gameplay that isn't your style but you still have to adapt. At this point, my biggest pet peeve is fans who say Russell is a bad player. He isn't. He's a great player. Hell, he's a lot better than most of the much-lauded "great" players. But he doesn't have a massive ego that creates an even bigger blindspot in his game. That can't be denied.

  • @Peridiam

    @Peridiam

    4 жыл бұрын

    That blindspot is huge though. Survivor is socio-political, and it revolves around how you treat others. There are no rules with jury votes, and thus they usually default to "who do I like/respect more." If you have a huge ego, and you don't keep it in check, you're gonna lose. Maybe not always, but most of the time. Russell has a huge ego and didn't keep it in check, and it cost him twice (if not more, really). I'm not sure Russell wins many other seasons, because I can't say his game would work any better in front of a jury. He'd still not keep his ego in check, he'd still rub people the wrong way, he'd still be just the same with his first two L's. He lost to two different, unique casts of 18 jurors - only receiving 2 votes overall. None of them knew him going in, yet only 2 wanted to vote for him walking out. Perhaps in todays game he could potentially win a more modern jury over, but maybe it's more of the same, or maybe he doesn't get to the end.

  • @Captain_Subpar

    @Captain_Subpar

    @@emmanuelnwade2873 Oh, don't get me wrong. Russell is HUGELY flawed and even an ounce of humility would make him a much better player but we've had plenty of seasons where the more ruthless player who owned their moves won. Russell is definitely more ruthless than most but it's not a stretch to say that he win with a jury that takes things less personally.

  • @Captain_Subpar

    @Captain_Subpar

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Peridiam Absolutely. If there's one area of gameplay that I wouldn't want to be weak in, it's people skills. A lack of challenge prowess can be overcome. Being too blindly loyal can still win you the game. But being ruthless to the point where you burn bridges is hard to overcome. That's what's endlessly frustrating about Russell. He's so good at so much but that Achilles' Heel is massive. His display in Australia was the most atrocious example. I do give Russell a bit of a pass for HvV. The guy had just gotten to the end of the game, thought he won, received a jury roasting, and turned around like 2-3 weeks later to play again with All-Stars. The chip on his shoulder made him out of control. I think he absolutely can win. We've seen many a jury respect game over personal relationships. However, all things game wise being equal, even those juries might fall onto personal relationships. That's why he'd have to get to the end with two goats again to have a shot. Plus, it'd just be that much harder for him to get to the end. That's the rub when you play balls-to-the-wall: the scenario reverses itself once people know your game. The first time you rocketed to the end but couldn't get the votes. The next time you could get the votes but you couldn't rocket to the end.

    hahaha yo man I never knew you too were riding the Russell train that season. I had been watching the show since season 11 so I had seen more, but Russell was the biggest character, making all the moves, playing the game in a way no one else had before, not only getting away with all kinds of shenanigans but thriving on them, and coming back from that 8-4 Foa Foa deficit. Mick was an obvious goat and I was so rooting against Brett at that point. Natalie was a bit of an afterthought. I didn't see that end result either and I didn't like it at the time. It hit me hard too. It was one of those edits with 20/20 hindsight that you just don't see at the time because you haven't seen it before, but it sets the stage moving forward. I'm not even 2 minutes through the video yet and I already expect to like and agree with most if not all of it >_> End conclusion: very astute, and that human element and the fact you have to know your jury is exactly why I won that Epic Struggle game against not 19 but 99 others after essentially being the Natalie to my final 2 partner's Russell in the 2nd half of the game (plus more late game comp victories). I was behind in pretty much all categories except jury awareness and in the end I won by 1 vote because I understood it all and pulled out honesty that I wasn't even questioned on about a move I had made, simply stating it on my own to 1 undecided juror because I wanted to put all the cards on the table. As for first crushing defeat, Judd in the first season I watched. I was crushed that he didn't win because as that was my first season, I had no clue about paying attention to editing >_

    My first season of Survivor was Survivor: Cambodia. I’m pretty young so I started very late, and although I have gone back and watched every other season, Cambodia was my starting point. And early on in Cambodia, I gained an affinity for Spencer Bledsoe. He was smart, strong, had a good strategic mind, and seemed to be socially adept. He was my favorite player that season, and after having watched back all the seasons, he is still one of my favorites. I followed him with open eyes as he maneuvered from almost being voted out instead of Shirin to orchestrating his way to the end and becoming a better man while doing so. I assumed that Jeremy would beat him at the end, but when not a single vote came up in Spencer’s favor, I was pretty crushed. Honorable mention to when Penner got medevac’d off of Micronesia, Russell losing Samoa, Lex and Big Tom getting screwed over in Africa, Colby losing AO, (although I love Tina), Boston Rob losing All-Stars, Coach losing SoPa, and Parvati losing HvV.

    My first defeat was Spencer in Cagayan. Man was I sad. I related so similar to his background and his mind and how he played, I fell in love with it. But, the way he went about it in his first go around is what doomed him, and even he admitted that. I found it very cool that he learned from it to end up imo playing a better game in Cambodia to get to Day 39 even though he came in second. (What hurts for me even more, Cagayan was more first season, and ever since then, the person I rooted for always lost. Low key kind of sucks)

    My first crushing defeat was Rob Cesternino not winning Amazon. It was similar to Samoa in the sense that the person who made most of the bigger moves got snaked by someone who did very little but made that little bit count.

    at least we know that rob would’ve won by a landslide if he made it. everyone on the jury knew he was the best player that season and he was very good socially

    @@TheMurrmursonbottle I wouldn't say we know that. Rob came in 13th out of 20. He didn't even make jury. There was a whoooooooole ton of game left to play.

    Russell had two opportunities to face a jury. Rob didn’t- there’s a difference.

    Rudy was definitely the first crushing defeat. Richard and Kelly had played themselves both as villains in different ways that season. Rudy as the old guy, in the first ever season, was the easy favorite and for him to make Final 3 and be taken out at the end was crushing.

    Russell could of been the first player to win back to back seasons if he would of just humbled himself. But his Ego got the best of him. Even in SurvivorAU 2018 he still hadn’t learned his lesson.

    I’ve watched every season as it premieres and I think my first crushing defeat was Rob from Amazon. Second was probably Ami from Vanuatu. The first five seasons I was just along for the ride. Rob was the first person I was like “I get what he’s doing and he’s great at it!” I was rooting for Sandra from the beginning. All Stars was just a great season. And then Ani came along and was PLAY-YING and not only got taken out, but by a loser squad...
