My First Big Mistake | Structural Engineer Confesses

In this video, I tell a story of my very first big mistake and how I went about fixing it.
It's nice to reflect on your past mistakes and share them with others so that other people don't make the mistakes I did.
It's really important to remember that it is inevitable that you will make some form of mistake. Hopefully nothing too severe but you will make a mistake. How you learn from these mistakes, big or small, is really important. Your seniors or managers can forgive mistakes but if you ever make the same mistake twice, you can bet there will be consequences.
Even though nothing happened and I was able to fix this mistake, it is still scary. When you are young, you should be afraid of making mistakes and you should do everything in your power to prevent mistakes from ever occurring. Mistakes in structural engineering can be life threatening so be careful and make sure your work is reviewed, no matter what level you are at, a second opinion or review is always advised.
I have another mistake story that it is probably a bit worse that this and I'll be happy to share that story another time. Thanks for watching!

As complex and good Robot might be, it is so not user friendly that it even helps you doing such silly mistakes. Robot is used in UK simply because it comes with Revit and Autocad. And it is often chosen by managers that do not even understand this software software. There are so many othere better softwares out there. But as they say garbage in, garbage out. We should always check that loadings have been applied and in the right ammount. An then agian Robot does not help much. And, a graduate should never be blamable. Where was the internal QA? Who verified your design? Who was the chartred engineer responsible for the project? So many questions yet one sigle answer. Not your fault.

exactly, Robot is not user friendly but if you familiar with this software , you can do wonderful things. In the early days Robot was called Robot Millennium, part of ROBOTBAT a French Software developer, then around 2002 2003, Autodesk bought Robot Millennium for 20 Million US Dollars

Can you do a video on how you would go about designing your own home from beginning stages to end?

Good video, this is a major issue with 3D models and analysis software. I always try and do hand checks for the models checking total reaction and as your experience, I would check a column strip and slab/beam strip for flat slabs. Seen this happen time and time again with the software models... Hey, you live and you learn.

Is definitely not your fault... You should have someone to check your design after you! But we always learn with our mistakes, I'm glad you found a solution👌

Yeah it was all fine. From memory, that slab was supported off huge beams and they had plenty of rebar in 👌
