I just finished Anxious People. This is also my first Backman and it's one of my favourite books of all time now. I don't even know how to conceptualize all the feelings I have right now. It seems like one of those books that will make you feel different things depending on when you read it in your life, so it will be an interesting one to re-read in a few years time.

I just finished it and I cried so many times. Granted, I’m going through a tough time (I suppose many are as well) but the way each character made me sympathize with them, the humor injected into a terrible situation, the way all the stories entwined, just... it was beautiful.

I am regarded by family as the ice queen because I don’t cry and I’m tough and unsentimental, but, I wept throughout ‘A Man Called Ove’ then watched the Swedish film and wept time and time again. When I finished the book I felt bereft that it was over. Backman is a genius - his writing so spare and simple but his emotional impact is enormous.

This is also my first Backman book and I really want to read more from him now. Got this as a book as a gift and I am just so thankful. I agree with how you said that the book had these things that we all couldn't just say out loud but have always known existed and they were just so beautifully written. It reflected how life could be so sad and scary yet those things are part of its beauty. 🥺

I finally got to read this today and oh man. I went into it expecting a humorous story, and it was, but it was also so beautiful and hardhitting, I was actually on the verge of bursting into tears the whole time I was reading the thing. And then I finished it like an hour ago and I'm still crying. I love it so much, it's probably going to end up as my best read of the year. My best read of 2019 was a Backman, too. Beartown, which is another beautiful read. I would recommend you check that one out next. :)) Great review btw. I'm now trying to get my mum to try this book. I really want her to read it. I just finished this yesterday and it’s my first Backman as well. I loved it so much I immediately went to look for other peoples review because I just need to hear everyone’s thoughts on this book! I truly think that this book is for anyone and everyone. It’s about so much but also such a silly little situation. The way this chaotic and scatter-brained plot all comes together in the end is a testament to Backman’s skill and imagination. I used up all of my tabs on this book. I can’t wait to read more from Backman!!

I picked up my BOTM box late this month so I'm only half way through this. I'm absolutely loving it 😍 though. It has confounded me at every turn. I think the funniest thing about this is the way everyone reacts to what it going around them, and how they react to each other. It's almost not normal. Also, I relate so much to one of the character's backstory. When I read it, I had to reread it a few more times just to absorb everything. I almost cried.

I've only read Bear Town and only haven't read the sequel as I was really satisfied how it ended. But I have to admit the first thing I did when you started this review was go and look up a list of the narrator's work. I love voice acting and narration, but I can go voice-deaf. Whenever someone is moved so significantly by someone's performance that automatically perks up my ears.

I am Spanish and I honestly liked it, I honestly think it is easy to read to foreign readers. To my mind, you have already pointed out the strongest points of Backman's book and you are completely right on it. Everyone may see at first sight he undoubtedly has an engaging narrative style that makes the book a page-turner. I also reckon one of the most highlightable features of Fredrik is that he gets deep inside of the characters motives and personality so that the reader can get a deeper insight on them. Moreover, it is not only that he is so talented at describing their characters but also he is amazing at doing it in such an hilarious way. On the other hand, just correct me if I am wrong, but I gather most of us missed the author built up a little more drama around Jack's and Jim's figures. I loved the way Backman gets into Zara's character, her loneliness, her cynism, her reluctance to mix up with the rest of the mortals..., so I would have loved Fredrik to do that with Jack's mum and sister, as well as with others like giving a despective description regarding the bank robber's husband, Estelle's alcoholism or even getting deeper inside Roger's and Anna-Lena's motivation. I also would have liked a more extended conversation between Nadia and Jack. The same way I did not expect the bank robber to come up with such an obvious, not elaborated escape, an alternate ending I was weighing up might have been the bank robber hidden inside the closet helped by Roger who sealed the hole on the wall or pretending there was one more hostage and embarking on a series of interrogations playing dumb and contradicting or accusing each other. Did you also missed some of this? Would you have preferred an alternate ending?

  • @QuestLegacy

For me, I agree that the best part of the story was the way Backman was able to explore flawed characters in a relatable way that wasn't inherently villainizing of certain negative stereotypes. It really made me love this book even when other elements didn't work for me as much. I do think certain characters, like Zara as you mentioned, got a LOT more depth and backstory than others, but I think it was probably a choice for pacing's sake just to keep things moving along. I would have appreciated more time with the book and diving into more characters probably, but also I feel like this book, even as it stands, had some parts that felt like nothing was moving forward so that is a difficult question.

A Man Called Ove is wonderful. Anxious People took about an hour to pull me in, but Ove had me hooked in two (short) chapters. Ove is probably my favorite character of all time, and I don’t usually enjoy contemporary fiction.

Beautiful review Michael. I just finished reading Anxious People. I personally don't think you would be out of line calling it a masterpiece. I cried many times reading this novel. Of course, that's not saying much. I'm a total wuss. Again, excellent review. Oh and Beartown is excellentl as well.

It is so so hard to recommend a book, just because all of his books are just wow. I wish I could delete his books out of my brain so I can read them again and experience them. However, I do recommend Beartown - it is also in 3 parts, so you can live the books' story for longer.

Haha, while I'm not trying intentionally to target you, I do invest a significant amount of time trying to get the populous vibe of sorts. As far as like literary critique, I don't think it has the sort of depth that you are looking for compared to what i'm hearing out of your current Sound & Fury stuff -- however I wouldn't be surprised if, based on your personal less introspectional reading taste, if both you and Krypto would like it.

This comment is purely for the algorithm, any response will result in an EXTREMELY vague spoiler for a book of my choosing. Will it be Hunger Games? The dictionary? Spite is fun, but is it worth the cost? Also you should have a half second intro card. It'd be after the "Hi, I'm Michael Knipp and ________" part, then BAM, intro card. I don't even know if that's the right word.
