Just discovered your channel tonight while trying to make myself read anxious people. I work in a library and my two pages have both told me this is a great book!! I tried back in December and life got too busy. I’ve committed to getting it done this week!!! Your review helped motivate me! This is my first Backman book. I know I’ll enjoy it once I get into it but I had a hard time the first crack at it!

I love this book. It has a little of everything. Comedy, drama, mystery, empathy, anxiety, depression, LGBT, masculine depression, acceptance, compassion, etc.

Beartown is so confined and I think hockey is the main character! It is such a great book. I didn't realise this was one of his writing traits but it totally is!

I'm so glad I found someone here who loves Fredrik Backman as much as I do. I am still reading my grandmother asked me to tell you she's sorry but my ranking is pretty similar to yours. I also started with A Man called Ove but I think I would keep Britt Marie over Ove because it was so unexpected from her to turn out into the person she did. But oh my god I have never seen any author whose every book is so incredible and truly a masterpiece. Do you have recommendations for any other similar author? I would love to read their books. Also I got introduced to your channel because of the first ranking of Backman's books and I absolute love your choices!!

Thank you! Yeah, I think I go back and forth on Ove vs. Britt Marie haha I can't think of another author that I've read that's like Fredrik Backman, but I have heard of Matt Haig being compared to him. I haven't read any of his books yet, but I've got Midnight Library on my TBR

Great review & I liked how you put your ratings in order. And your observations about how he uses confined places in his books. You made me laugh with your multiple attempts at "hostage situation" and how you will be held personally responsible if we don't like it. Or not! Hahaha.

Marin Ireland is the narrator of Anxious People and Beartown. I just finished AP and OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! This book is so unique! Marin Ireland made it more special cause she can emphasise Fredrik Backman’s humour. I’ll read Beartown this winter.

1 A Man called Ove 2 My Grandmother... 3 Anxious People 4 Britt Marie... I separate The Bear Town series mainly so I can cheat but I think they are so different to his other books I can’t rate them in the same category so 1 Us Against You 2 Bear Town I have only read one of his novellas (Deal of a Lifetime) so can’t rate them. I was pretty meh 😕 about it though tbh!

"Backman is a master of writing delightful, insightful, soulful, character-driven narratives...[He] writes so humorously and poignantly about life, marriage, parenthood, love and death, prepare to be taken hostage by a stand-up philosopher/novelist who reminds us we are all ‘idiots’ because being human is ‘idiotically difficult.’” -USA Today if u want to buy this amazing book from amazon here is the link for that sites.google.com/view/bestbookshoponline/anxious-people

I have another video where I go over all of the books and recommendations, but to summarize, I would suggest reading his Beartown series. Or if you are not looking to read a series, then I would read A Man Called Ove or Britt-Marie Was Here.

Thoughts on audiobook vs physical copy?

I think either would be good! I've read and listened to the audiobook for both Britt Marie Was Here and My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry. They were both enjoyable both ways. I think Backman did a great job setting up the space of the apartment in this book, and I never found myself needing to go back to clear up my understanding of it, which is my biggest worry that I will need to do when listening to an audiobook. So honestly, I think either would be good!

I think Anxious People would be a good one to start on if you're looking to give him a try! 😁 All his books have been picks for my in-person book club (well, in-person if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic haha) so that led to me reading them all! Although admittedly I was the one to originally recommend him 😂

I am! But I almost never review on there. The 5 star system makes me nervous lol I've been getting into StoryGraph though, which allows decimals (like 3.75 stars). Currently, I'm updating both but only doing star ratings on StoryGraph. @@FreshlyReadBooks hahaha, yeah. I too find myself often confused, 3 stars or 4 stars. 3.5 would have been nice. When you don't rate a book (only marked read on goodreads), that means 0 stars?

@@FreshlyReadBooks oh, my bad. You stopped rating! I usually round a star up, not to crap on the author's hard work if I'm in a pickle like that.

Yeah, I just don't rate at all so that I don't impact the overall rating haha sometimes I will if it's a lesser known author or book that I really liked just to make sure they get more ratings, or if a book is an obvious 5 star 😊

Neither "open house" nor "anxious people" are good titels. A fitting title would be "The wisdom of a wall decal" or maybe just "OK boomer". Also the German title "Eine ganz dumme Idee" (a very stupid idea) is quite apt as you can feel getting dumber with every page.
