My finger technique apparently sucks...and how I use technology to fix it.
Музыка
So this week I got a couple of cool apps on the iPad: one allows me to record myself, the other to play it back at 1/4 tempo...which lets me hear just how uneven my technique is! And when I can hear it, I can fix it.

Richard Moore Hi Richard! So sorry about only shipping to the US. I have had negative experiences with global shipping through eBay. If you would be happy with a digital copy, please send me an email and we can work it out. 918clarinet@gmail.com.
"I am going to record myself and see just how disappointed I am going to make my teacher". Right there - the reason I hate recording myself!!!
I love how you always stay motived with playing and practicing clarinet
Why did u pick that piece dear god
Alright, so I made a youtube video "commercial" with a little more details about my book (first video I have ever made). Be gentle! Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5qTtpuPY5ibYdI.html
He - I am an old man and have restarted clarinet playing 2 years ago. During my studies I visited the Conservatoire and learned clarinet , played 20 years and took a start again with 69. I like your channel and your videos. Thank you for that Ulli
Love the title of the book. I still have my Kroepsch book after all these years. My teacher used to call it the "craps" book.
I wish there was a channel like yours, but for oboists. :/

Man, these videos just make me to pick up my saxophone and start investigating and fixing all day long my crappy technique! but i just want to get better and i am going to practice SLOWLY and record and LISTEN! Thank you!!!
I'm playing the second movement of sonata in G minor next wednesday and there were some rough spots for me but thanks to this video I was able to smooth them out, thanks!
Thanks, Michael. This video is helpful for those of us with other instruments as well.
The fact that you used a scale makes me happy because I’m learning my high school scales and I literally suck at technique.
You know Kristen Denny Chambers?!? She was my clarinet teacher in Oklahoma (Tulsa). It's a small world

Hi! Could you play the phantom of the opera theme on the bass clarinet? (I think it would make good use for a lesson of dynamics?)
Hi, quick question on the apps could you explain how you get the audio from the recorder app to Any tune pro? been trying to do similar for ages an never managed to figure it out. Many thanks AB
What would be wrong if when i play notes in the clarion range i sound like I'm playing a saxophone?
Mr. Micheal... Can you please make an updated video about slap tongue?...
Is the piece from the Chicago Symphony recorded? And if it is, is it on KZread?
What neckstrap is that? I really really hate my current saxophone/bass clarinet neck strap, but everything costs a lot and looks similar.
Just a reminder that finger problems are frequently air problems. First thing to look at when fingers are malfunctioning is whether you are letting down your air support at any point. Of course slow practicing helps to focus on this.
What bass clarinet is that? (Brand & model)
Do you want to teach Spohr 2.2 on KZread? I have to play it in January, unfortunately im living Germany, so i cant come for lesson.... Maybe you have some tipps for the hard parts?
How to play high notes on bass clarinet without croaking?? I can play them but at the start of the note it's a bad attack no matter what and the higher I get I cannot tongue the note if I want it to come out? Am I doing something wrong??
What size reed and brand do you use?
Have you ever thought about doing a small master class on Ballade by Eugene Bozza?

Hey Michael, (good name by the way) are there any potential problems that can arise from always keeping your clarinet out in your experience? I have a Yamaha custom wooden clarinet and I always get worried if I leave it out about cracks and so forth but I get way more practice done if it's always available to play at any moment. Thanks in advance

It's usually a good idea to put it away. I leave mine out if I'm going to practice later in the day, but usually not overnight

I would suggest that you ALWAYS put your reed away (in a reed case with humidifier; alt, a piece of glass with a rubber band in a baggy, also with humidifier). During the winter, leaving your instrument out in dry air would have an impact on your pads more than the wood. The late Harold Wright always used a small piece of orange peel in his case; nowadays you can buy instrument humidifiers. And of course use a humidifier in the room if possible.
Excellent video! I'm just curious as to why you use your middle finger for the F# instead of first finger and the chromatic Bb/F# key with the third finger? That's always been easier in my opinion.

Sara Johnson focus on where your hands are, it’s a lot larger than a Bb clarinet, make sure you have the right reed for your mouthpiece (if it sounds airy it’s probably too strong, really squeaky is probably too weak, if you find yourself in between two strengths go for the stronger of the two because it will get a bit easier to play once it breaks in), for your embouchure try to focus on not biting down since more often than not you’re going to squeak doing that, and practice you’re scales, and make sure you practice over the break
You sound like my private teacher.
