I can’t thank you enough for this video. I’ve been driving myself nuts wondering why some cuts are square and others are not. For anyone considering a MFT3 or researching errors with square cuts on a MFT3, I’ve not found a better video than this. I guess I’ll be shopping for new rail brackets and a fence.

I totally agree with you. On my mft3 table the top and therefore the holes are not square with the aluminum extruded frame. I think that may be why with your new components it was still a bit out of square. I enjoy your reviews because you tell it as it is, no sugarcoating.

I'm new to the festool line and got a bunch of kits already. Bumped into the mft table at the store and I felt like I almost knocked it down. However I've been thinking about it recently at much more convenient it might be with all the little system things integrated on it but it just felt so crappy at the store. Preach Michael! Watch for the tool reviews, stay for the wisdom on the human condition. I'm new to woodworking, but have always sought accuracy. That's why I was drawn to Rob's work last year. I have a Dashboard, and his pivoting guide rail. Both are accurate out of the box and designed to last. Tremendous respect for him bringing them to market.

I totally agree! I abandoned several of the mft accessories because of introduced error. TSO upgrades are great, bought them all. I’ll look into the products you mention here, thank you and you have a new subscriber.

Oh my! This is the funniest video I’ve ever watched. Better than Groundhog Day. I feel like I’ve been living in a parallel universe, trying most of the things you’ve done. Bigger square - check (well, bigger triangle), slop-stop, yup. Fence dogs, check. I have the Betterly thing for aligning the rails (good question, why did I need to spend the money on that?) I’ve literally been laughing so hard there are tears running down my face. I think I have the same definition of square you do, but have been wondering why it is so hard with the MFT. Four years of struggling. I keep watching all these setup videos where people “set up” their MFT in seconds, thinking I must be missing something. But every time I lay a tape measure on the diagonal, it is always off. Hold up to the light with a square, light shining through. Thank you for a video that is both hysterical and informative. Awesome.

Somehow people think that when they buy something expensive/luxury, they have to defend it, even if they're not satisfied with the product. Thanks for the information. If I hadn't watched your video, I would probably never heard of the Dashboard guide rail brackets for my MFT3. I have always been frustrated with the lack of accuracy and the amount of time it took to set up and calibrate my MFT. Even then, it still wasn't perfect. As a result, I am buying a true CNC aftermarket MFT tabletop (so I know the holes are square), building my own table (so I know it's square), and either buying Dashboard's rail or building Peter Millard's simple, DIY hinge.

Concur that the Dashboard product is a good one but I find their benches quite expensive and anything but reasonable.

"Get a bigger, square, square, they said." I laughed out loud. I'm sitting in the waiting room at the vet's office and I got a couple of odd looks, but it was worth it. You get a thumbs up and a new subscriber just for that.

Subscribed this is why I make my own bench using Peter Parfitt’s system to drill the holes and attach the rail to his Super Dogs, and 80/20 to build the frame. Better stuff. Festool makes great tools, then gouges on the accessories

Love the review...I don't own any festool tools but have been looking at their MFT tables...after much consideration I instead invested in the Parfa guide system to make my own MFT top and my order of 80/20 aluminum frame material arrived yesterday for the bench...for about half the cost I should be able to make my own and plan on purchasing the Dashboard rail guide later. For my fence I ordered a wider extrusion of aluminum that will act as a rigid guide and will add a stop as well, not as nice as the Incra fence but for $30 will do the job...

I just bought the ts60 track saw and was lookig at the MFT 3 system which looked and felt flimsy. But I thought that maybe it was made to be loose and everything would center it's self once tightened. I'm glad I saw your video. You saved me $800 dollars. I'm not expecting machinist level precision. But if I wanted to fiddle around with tools to get them to perform I would buy wen and Ryobi tools. Thanks for this video 😃👍🏽

Great video. I'm heavy into the system and have most of their stuff. I have 3 of the MFT/3 tables (bought them all used, half off or more). Couldn't agree more with your frustrations. I use the TSO triangle square with the pins to setup my guide rail on the MFT/3. I gave up on the protractor head and bored two 20mm holes for fence dogs and secure my fence with those farther back to increase crosscut capacity. It works for me but I keep eyeing those Dashboard brackets. The Track Tubes project is something else I follow and own and they are looking to incorporate the Dashboard brackets into their mobile setups soon.

I think a lot of us have been thru this…myself several years ago and when I learned of Robs unit it was the game changer. You’ve covered this perfectly

First time viewer and subs. You are totally right this is auto-foolish. The MFT/3 basic here is $930 with the guide it comes to $1120. There is no way I would pay that much for so little in return. Like someone else posted, I went with the Parffit guide and dogs. This is the best/accurate/fast/simple method to break down small parts. When it comes to break down full sheet goods you are better off that small table. Use your floor or an assembly table big enough to do the job safely.

Thanks for bringing DASHBOARD to my attention. I don't have the severity of problems with the MFT3 as you did but just like you mentioned the "balancing act" to get it set drove me crazy. I too love all my other Festool products and have had very few issues but the MFT3 is a bit of a lame duck. It looks like I may give it another go with the DASHBOARD bracket. Thanks again!

Great video really appreciate your perspective and viewpoints. I have been using the dashboard system for sometime now as well with my own MFT built table. Or resonates most with me is our shared belief in not making excuses, or compromises to accommodate tools that cost thousands of dollars. It really is a shame because homeowners and non-industry folks would benefit most from the set ups versus creating your own genes and everything else to get by, and then they Ryan to these experiences, and it’s less than optimal

100% honest / accurate video. I just struggled for 3 days to get my MFT all squared up.....the stock festool hinge pair (front & back) hardware is kinda garbage. now that i have my kit squared up i'm excited to put it to use...but i was really struggling and regretting my purchase.

I experienced many of the same issues with the MFT. I too abandoned mine, folded it up and put it in the corner of my shop for years. I only recently put it back into service. I'm consistently getting square cuts now, after having bought a large square and making many test cuts to determine how to snug the knobs/fasteners as well as my cutting technique. I am careful to align my body with the saw, pushing directly from behind. I agree. For the premium price, it should deliver consistent results without having to finesse it.

I know the gripes of the MFT. Those are nice after market bits . Have you watched The New Brit Workshop with the parf guide system? It’s so much cheaper and quicker using the holes in the MFT table. Another nice video.👍🏻

Thanks for watching Jason! I did consider the part guide system for producing a more accurate MFT top, but that would only solve part of the problem. I know that they sell rail dogs for the rail but I prefer the hinge action of the original equipment and the Dashboard.

Nice review. Have you seen that the TSO rail guide square (that you showed) can now mount to the Festool hinge as well as the rail? You can then use that as your fence without any other squaring needed.

I totally agree with you regarding the MFT - I love Festool products - TS55, KS60, domino XL, ... but not this one. Bought it to get easily repeatable square cuts and guess what - I just couldn't get them square. I was surprised at how flimsy the hinge mechanism on the back was, regularly forgot to slot the rail fully into the front mechanism (which also annoyingly catches in your clothes) and even when I remembered to slot it in I couldn't get right angle cuts. The front mechanism also limits the depth of board you can cut (less than the depth of the table). Like you I went on a perilous journey spending more money in order to justify the initial expense. Here's the work around that I stumbled upon: I bought the TSO guide rail square (GRS-16) and the TSO TPG parallel guide system to cut large sheets before bringing them indoors - quality products (Festool have now replicated/licensed the GRS). The GRS has holes which line up with the MFT hinge mechanism so you can attach a GRS to the hinge, clip ANY size rail onto the GRS and cut boards of any depth perfectly square. The squareness is achieved by pressing the sheet up against the GRS edge which is square against the rail. Attach a parallel guide and flip stop to the GRS and you can now do measurable, repeatable cuts. It eliminates the annoying front mechanism altogether. I works completely independently of the 96mm holes and the rail itself can be clipped on and off easily so can be stored elsewhere if desired. The only disadvantage is that the flip stop on the TSO parallel guide rail is adjusted by sight only so its hard to guarantee exact repeatability if you move the flip stop around (especially as you get older!) - now if they could liaise with INCRAtools and get flip stops with stepped/lockable 1mm increments.......

Bilal, I do not have any experience with Kreg ACS, but I have seen it in person. From what I saw, I prefer a MFT basic with the upgrades shown in the video or better yet a Dashboard. Thank for the sub!

Thanks for the review man. Based off your last video on the mft and a friend that has some of the same products, I to purchased the dashboard and waiting on them and the fence dogs to come in. My current fence dogs are to tall for the incra fence stop. I to would square the rail to the dogs and find the profiles are not square to the dogs. Called festool and they admit they are square to each other. So that being said my top has a 3/16th dip in it so I have a guy with a cnc going to machine a new high dollar birch top. And purchased a rail from a friend to make my mft 32x80. When I'm done building this, I plan on using it for a while and get Robert's bench. More expensive but man that thing is awesome! Just watching this. I bought my MFT because of space limitations and, unfortunately, before Dash-Board came out with its smaller “ShortCut” $899 table. If I had to buy a table again, I would go with the better-built, marginally more expensive ShortCut. As it is, thanks to your excellent, honest, and courageous review, I dumped the MFT hardware and went with the Dash-Board hinges, and added Dash-Board’s Track Stars, Rip Fence, and Outrigger accessories. I must say, Rob S., a Dash-Board founder, has always been responsive to my emails and inquiries. Hard to imagine Festool doing that. Those Dash-Board products together seem to make the MFT workable, precise, and as you say - repeatable. Next time, I will either build a table or buy a tested and well-reviewed product like the Dash-Board.

Thank you. I'm with you right from the first words out of your mouth. Festool talks the talk, but you can't take the accuracy and reliability to the bank. If you talk to them about real issues, you get excuses and justifications --- for years, while prices keep going up. TSO products is the real deal. TSO could very well co-opt the Stabila mantra: "Trust, never adjust." I use their GRS rail square and forego the MFT holes altogether. Your reviews are truly discriminating. Dash Board owes you enormous thanks for delving into what separates their products from others --- namely, both superior design and execution. I just learned of the DB system and initially wondered how it was anything other than an oversized MFT with copycat features and accessories. Your incisive analysis gets right to the heart of the matter. As you compared components, side by side, I recalled the scene where Crocodile Dundee said, "That's not a knife --- THIS is a knife."

Absolutely right. I can't believe I bought an MFT. Small workshop and thought it made sense, also just fell into the trap of thinking anything Festool is amazing. Having to infinitely prat around with it and make sure you don't knock it and possibly still not cut square even if you do because a knob is tightened too much or the track has worn away is a huge waste of time. Each to their own though, if you love yours then great.

In trying to make and assemble small and midsize boxes I find it almost impossible to cut my wood stock square with a Skilsaw, Kreg track, woodpecker squares, bora table, etc. I finished last night in total frustration. I either need to bite the bullet and invest in either a Tracksaw, Kapex or SawStop table saw. I would appreciate anyone’s feedback. My intention is to have a fully equipped shop but not sure what to get first. I want to begin with boxes and cabinets, then move to furniture and tables. What comes first? In what order would you build your shop if your intention was to own everything that you would need, but my purchases would need to be made over a period of two-three years? Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike, Thank you so much for this review. Have a look at the Parf Guide System from UJK Products in the UK. It was invented by Peter Parfitt for setting exact dog hole layouts based on the Pythagorus 3,4,5 triangle. I have the oldest set and it's accuracy will blow your mind. Highly recommended. @@concentrichomesolutions I have now examined the offerings from Dashboard pretty well. Their table is far superior to the MFT and the guide rail mounts as well as you know. Still, they have no provision for angled cuts. I emailed them and they sent a picture of an accessory made by another company that they recommend/use to cut angles. It is just a miter gauge that registers in the dog holes. Then you turn the arm to whatever angle you want to cut and register the guide rail against that. Easier seen than explained but I bet you get what I am saying. My problem is that I hardly ever break down sheet goods and when I do, I lay down a piece of styrofoam insulation and throw the sheet good on that and cut through into the foam. I hate to spend about $600 on a MFT without the guide rails and then buy the guide rail mounts from Dashboard and two 55 inch guide rails from Festool putting me into about the $1200 range when all in. If you bought all that you would still have wobbly ass Festool MFT that you would need to buy the accessory leg braces for. Of course I would still need the angle gauge from Cesspool unless I bought the same one Dashboard uses and then would have to buy that. Now we are talking another couple hundred or more dollars. No more than I would use either device it looks like I might have to just pass on either one. I have a Festool (TS 75) track saw and a 106 inch and a 55 inch guide rail and a miter saw, the DeWalt 12 in compound slider (DWS 780) I think for angles. What do you think?

Festool Kapex for angle cuts under 12", and a 55" guide rail with Dashboard upgrades on my MFT for crosscutting 12"-24" and 106" guide rail which I use with my TS 55. Im unfamiliar with the angle jig that was reference by Rob at Dashboard, but I would be interested in finding out more about it.

Most awesome video. I could not agree more with the emphasis on knocking everything out of alignment just by tightening the various components. It can be done, but one has to be very careful by constantly checking and rechecking after tightening something up; even turning a knob ever so slightly can cause trouble. You are right, it should not be that way.

you are absolutely correct----festool is expensive ---not precise---it is a shame that you have to purchase aftermarket items to make something that should have been accurrate in the first place great video

how to get ahold of the dashboard rail thing in eu? seems impossible :( im building my own mft table and the dashboard accessoirs look very very well made.-... edit: also yall keep in mind the festool mft is a job site table for cabinetry 0.1mm error on 50 cm would be acceptable for me

Our RAB Jig can align your table to both the fence and the guide rail in less than 2 minutes to a near perfect 90 degree cut, first time, every time. Refreshing to hear someone put into prospective the "eletist attitude of the festool faternity" good gear very expensive... Ive been following a guy here in the uk, Peter Millard he's done some good stuff recently building a portable style mft system with bench dogs.... great and finishes up with a very accurate sytem for less than half the price! check him out....

Every tool manufacturer has one or more tools that are best in class. For instance, for routers and jigsaws, Bosch; for bench top planers and drill drivers Dewalt. Festool makes several tools, but not all of them are best in class, but price them as if they are.

I was sorta looking into this system and wondering about this sorta thing, error. My long term goal is to build unique furniture made from wood, concrete and steel so I was thinking of getting the steel welding assembly tables and just using them for the woodworking. Those tables are super accurate for metal assembly so more than enough for woodworking. Of course, a hole magnitude more expensive than this little MFT table, they are like 2k or 4k and weigh in at 2,000 to 4,000 lbs for the bigger ones. Some of the bigger industrial ones are like 11,000$ but I think I can build most of it myself for much much less. I just need the top steel plate. For using it for woodwork, I will just make a top MDF sheet and index the holes to duplicate it in the wood, should work well enough.

@@concentrichomesolutions I did check out the Dashboard table, very nice, hopefully the production ramps up more. I would definitely get that over Festool. Looks like the biggest table with all the bells and whistles cost around 2500, maybe with all accessories another grand and change, heck my first AR rifle cost more than that.

This may be sacrilege to Festool users, but consider the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System. It even comes with the saw, which isn't a bad one, for around $900. The table is bigger too. I have had great experience with Kreg customer service. I once owned the Festool of cameras. A electronic Hasselblad. I had to have it. Then, I couldn't afford accessories or more lenses. Some say the Festool system is not expansive enough. I have heard great reviews about Milwaukee. DeWalt's are inconsistent, except with certain things, like the thickness planer.

@@concentrichomesolutions I have a belief that may be wrong, but I'm sticking to it. I believe DIYer tools, ie.Ryobi, aren't that much different than the pro grades. For instance, brushless. They use the same technology. How much different could they be? But, Ryobi is half the price or less. I once read you pay 10 times the price for high end audio equipment to get the last 5% of sound. Is that worth it. With tools, our ancestors did everything without electricity and there are some beautiful mansions built with them still out there. Not that I will go to hand tools.

There is a line that exist between the various levels of power tools (diy, semipro, and pro). The line between them may not always be strict but there is a line (in terms of built quality a performance) nonetheless. High end audio is a beast onto itself!

@@concentrichomesolutions There's another huge exception: computers and mobile devices. Apple stands alone at the very top in terms of quality, durability, reliability and productivity. This may sound like a strong statement, but any professional who doesn't have an iPad or iPhone in the shop, is underutilizing their time. With an iPad, you can view plans, calculate dimensions, figure out tap and drill sizes, make rough measurements and angles, search for solutions on the web or KZread, etc. Some models even have a flashlight. You can do most of those things with Android or Windows device, but its all the tiny details that Apple perfects that makes all the difference.

Secondly, I have been told that the MDF holes will drift with humidity. I always do like you are doing, set up with measurements each time. //ji

Randy, if you’re referring to the one that attaches to the worktop, I’m not sold on its ability to maintain accuracy. My preference is for something that attaches to the extrusions. Thanks for watching!

Spot on. I bought an MFT/3 several years ago and had the same experience. Except I decided to stop throwing more money at it and put that money into a sliding table saw. Now my MFT/3 is just an overpriced clamping/sanding table.
