I’m so glad my teachers drilled us on geography in high school. I can point out almost every country on a map and it’s massively helpful for reading history

This is good advice. I memorize maps as a hobby and have always found that extremely helpful in contextualizing history-a good friend of mine is blind and struggles to read any history, I think for reasons related to your discussion in this video. Recently I recommended to her a history of Hawaii, which is a geography she was familiar with before she went blind (Captive Paradise by James L Haley, a great book btw) and she had a good time reading it. I’m hoping some good textual representations of geography may help her contextualize other histories. For my part, as a geography nerd, I endorse this video entirely.

For sure, that's a great solution for those who struggle with sight. And thanks too!

Have you considered getting her to learn the world map using Braille and listening to a couple geography-focused podcasts? It could really benefit her to have even a shallow mental picture of things.

Great advice in regards to having a mental image of maps because i was recently reading a biography on napoleon and had to constantly look up the map of france for better understading and visualization of all his battles

One of the best videos you've done. Yes, ir"s important to have a good grasp of geography when reading history. It helps to hang a map of the world or maybe a continent in a room or office. It's something you may look at everyday.

I had a wonderful history teacher who was explaining geography to me to understand history, so I did not ask myself any question that would make me read about history, so I have not read any book that talks about history yet, but you motivated me to read one, and thank you for this legendary content, love from Egypt ❤

I could relate to this, funnily with regards to fiction rather than history. When I first read Lord Of The Rings it was a task to follow the story, but over time as I got more familiar with the Middle Earth geography, not only did the flow of my reading improve but it made reading itself so much more fun. And if it can enhance a tale as great as this one then surely it's worth investing some time in.

That's a great example to use. Knowing where each kingdom lies makes the story so much more coherent

I like to skim them first, then only read the bits I care about. Of course, if they're written well, I'll read from start to finish properly

Yes great tip for sure. When i read Herodotus i had the globe sitting right in front of me. Its surprising how so many people are ignorant about geography. When i was climbing in New Hampshire my sister called me and asked me if New Hampshire bordered Montana. I read that the scoundrel Trump could not locate Ukraine on a map in a conference. I live in the US and i know many people across this country and the majority of them are dummies i must say to be honest

Yes the lack of basic knowledge is worrying. I suppose it's easy to see why: most lack the desire to sit down and fix it, and that's understandable honestly. Still, wish it stuck in school better
