The Yusuf Ali translation is actually quite beautiful. The old fashioned english actually contributes to the beauty. I am reading Islam and the destiny of man at the moment and I must say it is indeed a masterpiece, absolutely stunning.

You're a phenomenal teacher, Paul! I really appreciate your videos. I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience with the Muslim street-dawah scene, which maybe is dominated by zealous youngsters with a "mob mentality", as you put it:) I hope you can find a different Muslim environment, that suits your intellectual and academic preferences, without the shouting and arguing all the time. Best regards from a Bosnian Muslim living in Norway :)

To be honest, I don't appreciate that style either. It feels a tad arrogant and that's not what Islam preaches.

Yusuf Ali's translation was introduced to me in the Understanding Islam evening classes by Chis Hewer. I liked it. It took me 3 months to read it word by word and putting questions to Chris Hewer. Recently my parish priest cited Middlemarch in his homily. Hope to start reading soon. Thanks for list of recommended books. .Bishop Robert Barron's one favourite is Moby-Dick which I read. In a paragraph it refers to Mohammad.

@@BloggingTheology The white whale in Moby-Dick is the metaphor for God. Avatars of God are also discussed.. Hindu god Vishnu is picked up. I have a hunch it could be also Allah. It's author Herman Melville sailed in the Indian ocean as young man. He was aware of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. In the USA there are many Herman Melville/Moby-Dick scholars. Why not Interview one of them. Famous line in Moby-Dick: 'Call me Ishmael'.

Note Shabir Ally's favourite/life changing books includes a book about Arabian Stories. Please review this book if you can to probe any connections or antecedents to Quran and Islamic thinking. I got the impression those Arabian stories pre-dates the 7th century Quran. Lesley Hazleton's The First Muslim - The story of Muhammad also refers to stories & legends which told during the younger days of Muhammad.

Interesting (for me) what you said at the end about cell biology. The lockdown for me was dominated by reading books by Dr Stephen Myers and Dr Mike Behe. I am part wany through Dr Meyer’s latest bookReturn of the God Hypothesis. I am glad for having read up on quantum mechanics and particle physics beforehand! Thoroughly recommend these books to all. It really made me realise that Neo Darwinists pander to those who prefer quick and easy pictorial representations of concepts whereas to properly understand one must dive (at least part way) into some quite difficult to digest details. Once we come out the other end, the difference is significant

Very interesting that you are studying Aqida through Ibn Taymmeyah, one of the most controversial and extremist scholar. The spiritual father of Alqaeda, Da'ish and Wahabiya. What about Al Ghazali, Ibn Arabi, Fakhr Arrazi, Mulla Sadra, ... basically I can go 1000 names before I come to the level of Ibn Taymmeyah. But you are a critical reader, just keep digging and comparing you will see the whole picture.

I also prefer Koran translations that use old-style English! I just find it sounds more regal and impactful. I’m picky with translations of the Koran, I feel like these days a lot of translations are very awkwardly written and not of good quality, they end up not communicating the beauty of the Koran at all. That’s why I prefer older translations like Marmaduke Pickthall or AJ Arberry. They put in way more effort and were actual professional writers who had an understanding of the art of words.
