Definitely agree about The Colony and Great Circle, they both stayed with me so much and made my best books of 2022. I didn't click with Young Mungo probably because it soaks in the misery a bit too much, but I agree in terms of the way he weaved in growing up working class and gay in Glasgow back in the day. The storyline at the lake broke me.

The way these books have written themselves into your heart ❤️ Thank you for discussing them so passionately. You’re so right about how The Colony has such depth beneath the surface. I feel like Young Mungo and Snuggie Bain are only superficially similar from their location and time period but their characters make very different choices. Guapa is so good! Glad to hear you connected with it. “You don’t have a true self” Yes! Happy New Year!

OMG such a breath of fresh air! I'm glad to have stumbled onto your channel after seeing your livestream with Ashley from BookishRealm. I really enjoy seeing different books being talked about for once, I feel like booktube is so saturated with the same content, it's really refreshing to see new books, authors, stories, being brought up. I'm hoping to find some great reads from your channel.:)

I read Mornings in Jenin 10 years ago and it still sticks with me today. I can vividly remember the lovers in the bathtub and just the beauty and grief and love in the whole book! So glad to see that you’re back :) I always love your recommendations! I’m working on a masters as well so I don’t have as much time to read as I’d like 😭 One of my favorite books of the year reminded me a little bit of Mornings in Jenin. It was “The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land” by Omar Friedlander. It’s a collection of short stories about life in modern day Israel. They are darkly funny, poignant and shows the complex humanity of all people who live in such a contested place. The language was also gorgeous and it’s lyricalness was what reminded me of Mornings in Jenin. Good luck on your thesis!!!

Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on your favorite. Going to def read Guapa. Just finished one of my favorite reads today, What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo, an emotional memoir. There's been a lot of good ones this year.

Really tempted by Guapa so thanks for highlighting it . I'm with you on The Colony , such a brilliant book about a small island with big big themes . It starts with anger and has a haunting sense of danger and menace right through . I also loved Foster by Claire Keegan and reread Cal by Bernard MacLaverty which perfectly captures the stifling restrictions of sectarianism with controlled and explosive prose .

Excellent top five. The Colony is high on my TBR. I’ve read two off your list. I enjoyed Shuggie Bain even more than Young Mungo. Must look into Guapa and Mornings in Jenin. 😊💙

"If you have not read this, please fix your life" is my new favorite line, so thank you, lol. I think in 2020 I did a "top 5 books" post because that happened to be the number of books I gave 5 stars. In 2021 I did a top 10. This year I gave 6 books 5 stars, and I'm too lazy to do a top 10 so I think I'm just going to be weird and do a top 6 this year. No rules!
