Indian Films and Filipino Films from the 20th century can also be included, considering that India has the biggest movie industry and the Philippines being one of the pioneers in film specially in asia, even once competed with the golden age of hollywood.

@@Hattori_Keiko Yes Bollywood may be outrageous and over the top most of the time, but considering the economic and cultural impact their movie industry has done even producing movie stars known globally I think they deserve a place. Bollywood now has the quantity (films being produced) and all they have to do now is take care of the quality.

I expected films from hirokazu kore-eda, Sion Sono, Kim ki Duk, more of Lee Chan Dong, and of course my favorite Shunji Iwai...yeah they are all indie directors.

The Wailing is a very good horror film and I agree that’s it’s probably one of the best Asian horror out there. On the other hand, I’m gutted not to see Crazy Rich Asians on this list. Probably the most groundbreaking film in Asian cinema.

I would imagine a few of you may have expected A Brighter Summer Day, Yi Yi and Grave of the Fireflies among others. I have seen them and love them but I've only seen them once so I don't feel like I can talk about them and do the films justice. Also I haven't seen enough Indian films to do a full section.

Hey there, really enjoy ur content. Have to say ive seen and enjoyed most of the films on this list. Im from india and a massive film fanatic. If u want to get into indian cinema, id recommend u to watch these films - Andhadhun, Taare Zameen Par, Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 & 2, Dangal, 3 Idiots, Munna Bhai Mbbs, The Lunchbox, Masaan, English Vinglish, Tumbbad. Just to name a few (hindi films). As india is a multi linguistic country. There are tons of good films in languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada etc. But i have to say, india hasnt come even near to the level of filmmaking and storytelling as hollywood has. But the films ive named are a few exceptions.

Thanks for this video. I've been meaning to cast a wider net in terms of films I watch and this gave me a tremendous amount of films (most of which I'd never heard of) to try out!

Thanks for the list. Two modern Japanese films came to mind which are absolutely beautiful and stayed with me long after they finished: An and Shoplifters.

What an excellent selection - you've included some of my favourite films here (Lust, Caution!), both action and art-house. As for other films that I'd include, you shouldn't forget the early works by Zhang Yimou, especially Raise The Red Lantern and Ju Dou - they're slow but ravishing and emotionally devastating, and who can resist a young Gong Li? From Hong Kong, Kung Fu Hustle is a lot of fun, as are the two Drunken Master films and Hard Boiled. Finally, it's a documentary rather than a feature film, but The Act Of Killing (which is about Indonesia though an international co-production) is a brutal and disturbing masterpiece. This channel is great, keep up the good work!

Flick Fanatics my first thought was In the Mood for Love, and it was immensely gratifying to have that perception validated. It is top 10 of any type of film of all time, and in a class of its own for exquisite bittersweet poetic heartbreak.

Yeah….I enjoyed this individual roll out his list of favorite films to watch. I like the no-nonsense approach he uses as he illustrates/articulates both good and bad on each of the films. Well done mate.

In Japan I will also say The human condition trilogy from Masaki Kobayashi, the director of Harakiri. And also Kenji Mizoguchi’s films like Sansho the bailiff (wich is my favorite of him), Ugetsu and street of shame. My favorite Yasujiro Ozu’s film is Tokyo Twilight, an absolute masterpiece. In recent cinema you have directors like Hirokazu Kore-Eda, Ryusuke Hamaguchi or Kyoshi Kurosawa who makes all of them good films too. I like also Taïwan cinema but I don’t know much because I don’t watched many movies from Taiwan so here’s some films that I love : The assassin, the flowers of Shangai, a brighter summer day. And here’s my favorite asian movies : Long day’s journey into night, An elephant sitting still, Burning These three movies are absolute masterpiece

Not gonna lie, I'm very happy you said princess monoke was your favorite flim in Miyazaki. Spirited away is visually appealing with very memorable characters (loved it as a kid). But princess monoke just stands the test of time IMO, it plot and morals. The movie doesn't need to be on the list but Princess Kaguya, is a great tragic story (maybe the problem is since it's folklore, told multiple versions, we're only seeing it from Miyazaki version). But the story and the score is truly captivating and worth noting! Was glad to recognize the flims you listed, definitely will add some to the watchlist.

Awesome video as always, man. If you are going through Kurosawa’s films, I can’t recommend “High and Low” enough. Love his samurai films obviously, but I personally like that one the most because of the story structure, Kurowasa’s always impressive blocking, representation of class structure at the time, diverse characters, and Mifune’s performance in it.

Just watched Throne of Blood too and was blown away by that ending. I cannot believe Mifune’s commitment to that scene. I found all the effects to have aged really well too.

Good list. One of my favourites you missed out was Jet Li's Fearless

I'm glad you point out Wong Kar-wai, who is my favorite director, but for the China/Hong Kong part, I would also recommend Jia Zhangke, the leading "Six-Generation"(a mainland Chinese term. You could google that) indie filmmaker. He made awesome (and unique in visuals) films like Xiaowu(1997), Platform(2000), Still Life(2006), a touch of sin(2013), mountains may depart(2015), ash is purest white(2018). Lou Ye, another Six-Generation indie filmmaker, is also great with films like Suzhou River(2000), Mystery(2012).

Agreed, Jia Zhangke is one of my favourite directors and I have seen all of those films as well (I think either Still Life or Xiao Wu are my favourite). For Lou Ye, I've only seen Suzhou river but liked it a lot. For some final mainland films, I think we are missing out on some great new directors like Diao Yinan (Black Coal Thin Ice, The Wild Goose Lake) and Wang Bing (Tie Xi Qu and Dead Souls took me days to finish but were both amazing). What I found most lacking on this list was the INCREDIBLE cinema scene of Taiwan! My favourite director of all time (and many critics favourite as well) is Edward Yang (Yi yi, A Brighter Summer Day). A Brighter Summer Day in particular is my favourite movie of all time (and I have seen many movies in my day). As well, the other Taiwanese New Wave directors like Hou Hsiao-hsien (A City of Sadness) and Tsai Ming-liang (Rebels of the Neon God) come to mind. One other thing regarding the choices for Japanese films; Ozu and Kurosawa are excellent, but I am surprised not to see Sion Sono (Love Exposure), Kore-eda (Still Walking, Shoplifters) or Hamaguchi (Drive my Car, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy). Kore-eda won the 2018 Palme d'Or and Drive my Car was a very serious contender for last years award (but lost to Titane by Ducournau, who's "Raw" I love)

Actually I forgot about yet even more Mainland Masterpieces; Hu Bo's "An Elephant Sitting Still" (sadly Hu Bo passed away soon after filming) and Bi Gan's "Long Day's Journey into Night" and "Kaili Blues". These are incredibly aesthetically appealing movies and make my top list personally. If one is looking to get into Mainland Cinema, these are must-see.

Fantastic video! I've seen all the films you mentioned (except one: Bad Genius which I will have to watch ASAP) and really enjoyed all of them. If there are any films you didn't list in your video that I would recommend, it would be either ''A Bittersweet Life'' (from the same director as ''I Saw The Devil'') and ''The Man From Nowhere''.

For me from the ones I watched that I really liked: India: 3 Idiots, 12th Fail, My Name is Khan, Dangal, Taare Zameen Par, Chicchore, Super 30, Andhadhun Japan: Spirited Away, Godzilla Minus One, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Perfect Blue, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo (need to watch more live action movies) South Korea: Parasite, Oldboy, Train to Busan (have to see more).

You have awesome taste in films, Park Chan-wook just released the Sympathizer on hbo i think but hes amazing director i love Decision to leave

A Sun by Chung Mong-hong, won some awards one of them being best picture, beautiful cinematography! totally recommend

Good recommendations, being asian, I saw almost all of them. But I would like to recommend xiu xiu the sent down girl, korean rom com marrying the mafia 1 & 2, indian movie 3 idiots, my favorite ghobli film is kiki delivery service and only yesterday, and more if it comes to me.

You should check Sion Sono’s work. Himizu and love exposure are just out of this world

Hi, I'm trying to find a movie. Maybe this is a good place to ask? It was on netflix Australia, but it was removed v quickly. It's about rebellious youths... mainly about two brothers. They have a father who's a police officer. The two boys are often truant from school. I think the movie starts with a group of youths trashing a mans yellow sports car. Movie made in late 70s or early to mid 80s. Local cop called king kong hates the two brothers. One of the brothers tries to escape from king kong after they trash a local supermarket & out of desperation one brother grabs a bottle & smashes it & points it toward king kong. King kong shoots him dead on the spot. The other brother finds a Vietnamese girlfriend, but king kong wants her deported, she must be an illegal immigrant? Movie ends with the surviving brother taking on king kong in a shopping mall. The surviving brother tries to mow king kong down in a car (yes, the kid is driving a car in the mall) This is killing me. I've looked for months trying to find this movie. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I think maybe made in Taiwan? Or Hong Kong?

What about Filipino films like those from old masters like Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal? And from the new blood of Filipino directors more specifically Lav Diaz and Brilliante Mendoza?

@@flickfanatics7948 You are missing out on a lot. Check out Aamir Khan's movies - 3 idiots, Like stars on earth, etc. Also Nawazuddin Siddiqui is an incredible actor and has some amazing movies - Gangs of Wasseypur,Raman Raghav 2.0,The Lunchbox to name a few.
