I was about to say... go with the commecial grade like Showa instead of consumer grade stuff. Just wanted to note that on Showa site, they have so many variations of these... depending on your weather one that does not get stiff during cold is ideal. Cheers.

Attempting the PCT 2024 and looking at glove(s) throughout the trail. The Showa glove looks great for Washington. I don’t need a midlayer; I suspect since it’s not winter. The sierra can get cold however. I am going with a Marino wool glove for the desert that will later be the liner. I doubt If it’s worn much in the desert. Maybe just on chilly mornings. I HOPE the Marino wool gloves is enough for the Sierra in June. That’s my concern. I can simply ship the Showa to Kennedy Meadows South. It just seems a lot without rain. A past and popular Hiker, Dixie, was miserable in Washington without water proof gloves.

Hi, Doug! Thanks for a great video full of insights. What would you say if I serve in cold conditions +-14 F, might stay long enough outside and have to hold my rifle, perform actions with small items. Would this layering composition be fine or you would change something? Thanks again for your answer and video!

  • @BackcountryPilgrim

Man, I am probably not qualified to answer this! I think temperature-wise I'd be OK with this setup if I wasn't too stationary (like lying prone in snow haha). The wool gloves would not inhibit trigger finger motion - and if you didn't have small levers, I think the black gloves could do OK (they are padded so keep that in mind). I'd be a bit concerned about the wool getting caught on an iron sight or similarly edged piece on the rifle if I was moving or shifting position a lot. Tough call from a distance!

@@BackcountryPilgrim good mention about wool and hot barrel, I didn’t think about that. Maybe mid layer should be a leather glove (at least palm) or fleece then.

Yeah sorry, its just not an application I've had experience with. :) I don't know if thr wool would have an issue with a hit barrel but the other gloves very well might.

@@BackcountryPilgrim oh that's good to know. Sorry, I worded my question a bit weirdly. I was more wondering if it was true to size, or not. But judging by your answer it is 😄👌 So you usually wear an L, and that works well, even with a glove liner? - Cheers :)

  • @BackcountryPilgrim

With a liner I'd size up. With gloves it's so hard to tell ahead of time - a lot of it is trial an error no matter what.
