Juicy question: Are there any city foods that you miss in the village? Would be interesting to know the way your eating habits have changed with the different availability and type of food between city and rural. Is one healthier? Are there any American dishes that you cook for that home taste of Appalachia?

The problem in rural China is: 1. No job; 2. There is almost no public infrastructure such as healthcare and education. Otherwise, not many people would leave their hometowns for the city

With bullet trains and broadband internet we should all be living in the countryside as much as possible

There's an interesting renaissance of rural towns in the Canadian prairies. With the rise of remote work people are finding affordable homes in towns which have been languishing for half a century. I don't see any bullet trains coming down the line though my government did just earmark $70 billion for NATO bullets. 😞
I love the mountain views! I can spend hours watching the clouds roll over them and seeing them change colour as the day and season progresses. I imagine it is sometimes hard to work with such a great view from your home office!

it gets distracting sometimes, I work best on rainy/cloudy days, LOL, otherwise I always feel like I want to go outside and be in nature 😂
Hi Kate.... You got the best of both world. Working from home surrounded with such a tranquil environment and an inclusive community. Your parents must be very pleased and happy that you have a such a warm Home. Hopefully they can visit you and have a first hand experience living in China is like.
I wish I lived somewhere like that. You are so lucky. Living the dream. Thanks for sharing. ❤🎉
China people morning will ask 早上好,吃早饭了吗?Afternoon will ask 午安,吃午饭了吗?At Night will ask 晚上好, 吃晚饭了吗?right?we Malaysian Chinese also said the same thing

Hi Katherine, that's total immersion !!! I think the folks love you because you care to reach out to them and that says a lot about you. Hope you continue to share this wonderful experince with us. Take care.
I grew up on a farm in China. The first such farm in China (赵光农场) until I was 16 when I came to the US for school in 1982. Only a few major roads were paved with sands, and the rest are all muddy roads. You can imagine what happens when it rains. I have not been back since my family moved to another farm (柳河农场) the same year I left and then to Harbin. From the pictures I have seen, my rural hometown has changed significantly. I went to HangZhou a few times around year 2000 and had 农家饭 a couple of times near Hangzhou. I have thought about spending a couple of months in the villages near Hangzhou with the local families. If my health holds up after I retire, I may actually do it. I always lived in small towns in the US since 1982 with the exception of San Jose, CA for 2 years. I really enjoy watching your videos on living in rural areas in China.
If I were younger, much younger than I am (82), I would move to China for a while, learning Mandarin and try to find out whether China could be the country where to live permanently or even for the rest of my life! Your and other China-minded people’s videos have attracted my attention, pondering on what makes China more than an exotic option for spending one’s life! Cheers Benno

I missed the atmosphere in rural China, I think I will go back to rural China when I elder, With my wife and my boys and girls❤
You love the natural environment, so you truly blend into the embrace of nature.
I love the bamboo mountains and the natural beauty they provide. It would be a dream come true living in such a peaceful setting. Unfortunately, few people have the flexibility to do what you are doing, being tied down by family and professional constraints. You are not only fulfilling your own personal dreams and goals, but by being such an effective vlogger, you are an amazing ambassador to bring real China to a global audience. Keep up the good work!

A very interesting perspective on rural Chinese life. Thanks Katharine! 🙏👍
nice..
Have a nice day...👏
There are places just like this in the US too. "Almost Heaven, West Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River Life is old there, older than the trees Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze Mountain Mama , Take me home, country roads".
You are spot on that nothing get wasted in the villages. Everything is reused, or recycled. This has been the lifestyle for thousands of years in China. Plus, most of the materials for building are locally sourced.
Thank you for sharing the life。谢谢你,阳离子!我是你的小粉丝,哈哈!
well done kath 👍
Your videos are excellent!
I just love your positivity! You make the simplest thing in life look attractive! Keep up with your adventurous spirit!
Good points. I knew all this already, but it took your video to bring home to me how it actually matters in real life.
Thanks for sharing your experience in China love the rural videos❤
I love this video. Everything you love about living in the countryside, I appreciate too! We’re kindred spirits!
I really like the place where you live, surrounded by nature where social relationships with the neighbourhood are still important! And then the walks in the surrounding area! Your house is also very nice and there you can certainly just go out in your garden and admire the beautiful mountains that surround you. Just wonderful! Thank you Katherine for this nice video.⚘️💕🌷

Around 60-70 years ago, there was a famine in China. About 40-55 million people starved to death during that time. So it is a big deal for the elders to ask others whether they have their meals.

Katherine, glad to see your video. I believe 百丈 is nesr by the city of Hangzhou, which is my hometown. Will keep watching your program. Thanks for your excellent videos.
Living in the natural environment is an enjoyable experience. Dear Kathy enjoy!
That’s so cool to experience the rural life. Would love to escape to this to escape the hectic city life ..btw you may already know but they use bamboo for scaffolding buildings in HK
Awesome
I don't know why, but I kind of cry whenever I see her videos. I feel like giving her a hug and asking, "is everything okay?" I would feel so lonely living alone with people from such a different culture, age, and spoken language. As long as she is happy and creating content that she enjoys what she is doing...

I am sure you know this. You are so blessed to be where you are now. 👍👍👏👏
Great video, Katherine. We lived in Yunnan for a while. Loved our China experience. Look forward to following your journey!
You can experience serenity and fresh air everyday.
Thank you, Katherine. Again I enjoy watching the video. & of course day dreaming too, tha i wish I could live there someday.. Greeting, from Seattle, Washington. ❤
My wife is also from rural China. It is so great to live there.. yes. knows everybody in the village, so much space and green. All the neighborhood acquaintance is so warm & touching. We now live in the city for work reason but certainly we go back & spend some time there every year.
I have been watching your wonderful videos for a long time. Thank you for sharing the wonderful life you have in China. It is so close to the nature and so beautiful. Regardless of the cultural differences and the uncomfortableness, at least it is safe and harmonious. Crime is less heard. People treat you with respect. Hope to see more of these!!
Love your videos on rural living in China! ❤ (devising a strategy to move out of Shanghai ourselves). Last weekend we visited this ecovillage called Sunshine Village near Tonglu, bit south of Hangzhou. It was so beautiful and inspiring! The people there focused on environmental friendly practices, community life, working together with older villagers and learning their skills. Also natural building, soap made from tea, colouring fabric with plants, so many cool things. Seems like a place you might also enjoy visiting! Their name is 三生谷生态书院 on weixin. Keep up the great work you're doing!
love your beautiful home
The rent is more expensive than I thought. I want to know who your cameraman is
Lucky gal! How i wish i could live in a rural environment like yours!🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful village
Having a house in the boondocks would be great for a weekend retreat. Especially for the creative type of people. This is the first time I've seen you cook in your videos, I had to make sure that I didn't blink, or I would've missed it. 😂😂🤣🤣 Kat, can you do an episode of baking cookies or cakes for the grandmas in the village and having tea and cookies with them...that could be fun. If you have a dinner party what would be your go-to dishes? Would it be Chinese or American?
very interesting.
You are so lucky for being able to live like that. 😊
Goodmorning dear heart. Good video. Can't wait to hear what the down side is. Where are your two friends. Did they go back to their homes in western part if China?

Hi Kat, for some it looks like a dream retirement home. But you got there way too early. 😊🐔🌺
Interesting video. I would miss my friends if I move.

Great video and the rent in both places rural and city is seriously cheap
I have visited and lived with my in-laws in rural China and can attest to most of the positive things you have said and can't wait to hear about what are the negative ones and see if they are in common to what have been my experiences, one of the biggest is there are lots of mosquitoes and I get bitten all over every time I go there. Next will be next month. Also, not so great is without a car or some other personal form of transportation, getting to urban areas for shopping and other conveniences on the local run-down buses which you have to wait a long time for sometimes is not so fun.
this life is pretty awesome, this girl is sweet
You should get a commission on rural China village real estate sales. You make it look irresistible. When I hiked in mountains near the city, the land was full of graves. Some centuries old. Is it the same in the country? Love your videos K
According to my uncle’s practice chickens can recognize their home at night if you feed them for a while. So don’t have to bother neighbors to come over while you are out. Just give them enough food that’s all
哈哈,阳离子也被提灯定损了😅
Amazing! Yes I would move there! I was born in a village like that and would love to see it again. Haven’t been back in 40 years. Hello from NYC. :)
So I *think* the “have you eaten yet?” form of rural greeting is not actually a question, it’s the actual greeting of hello. It came from the days when food scarcity was a real issue, and asking “how are you?” was actually “have you eaten yet?” Again, I’m just a novice learning about different cultures! Please let me know if you find out :)
