My Favorite Tactic for FM20

Ойындар

I believe we have made it far enough along in Football Manager 2020’s life cycle that I can answer this question conclusively: I have my favorite tactic for FM20. This is not an end all, be all tactic, but a way of aligning your tactical mind that gives you the best chance to win. In the streamer showdown, Football Manager’s premier competitive event I guess, it is the most common tactic on display. Seemingly, this proves my point, but I have had great success running it in all of my saves this year.
One of the most important things for a tactic is to preserve versatility throughout the season. This wide 4-3-3 does just that. But, I will not link it for you. Tactics in football manager seem to be a sticking point for a lot of people in my DMs, so consider this video part tactical breakdown, part guide. There is no exact way to line this tactic up to win unless you consider your own teams strengths, so do that.
Much Love,
FM Senpai

I developed something called "Vami's Zigzag" (Vami being my CM/FM community nickname since 1995). It's IWB - MEZ - IF. The way it works is the IWB cuts inside, while MEZ goes outward from the center into a wide position and IF cuts inside, so it creates a complementary three-player zigzag. I managed to put it to extreme, having two zigzags, one on each sides and extremely narrow possession game. My possession oscilated around 80% in every game.

Cute! I was using the 4x3x3 with 2 Mez's just like that in FM19. But I felt there was not enough scoring in FM20 with that one. So I went digging the local spots and found that the most productive goal scoring tactic in the game was Lisa's 4x4x2 Spider (diamond). A bit like Knapp's Phantom Menace but with more goal scoring because the change in the FW roles (Pressing,Attack from Knapp into AdvForward from Lisa). I then modified a few things in that tactic and came up with something... I'm using a 3x5x2 based on that. I've pulled the DLP into a 3rd CB with the Libero,Attack role. The other two CB are BPD with Wide intruction. The two WB became WB in their WB position, up in the field. This way I defend with a 5x3x2 and develop into a 3x5x2. Sometimes I feel there are many bodies behind the line of the ball but it gives the consistency the tactic needs. In mid, two symmetric BtB Mids with Wide instruction. In #10 an Attacking Playmaker with Support. I've tested a number of roles here, even Enganche. I feel none is better than AP because, well, it's the best of the worst. And I tell that because that player sometimes has 6.5 in a game with a lot of 7's or he has a 7.5 in a game where he is the key of the attack. Is pretty inconsistent but I'd rather have a body in that space in this tactic regarding the type of instruction. I feel the AP support is the best one since he covers a lot of space in both off and def transitions. And being a Playmaker dictates some plays with two BtB behind. Up front two Advanced Forward because, as Zee tells here it is the right instruction for a goal scorer in this game. I've used several lone strikers with several instructions... since DLF, F9, Complete Forward (a disgrace in this match engine as Zee pointed out)... then I started pairing with different roles. That... does not work. I thought the big striker + small striker would work but... no. No matter who you play. Either go 2x PressAttack and have a mobile and energetic duo that needs someone behind or in the wings to be a scoring threat or play the 2x AdvFW and grab some powerful ones and get on with it. In my FC Porto save, Aboubakar and Marega are the best AdvFW for me. And I even grabbed the Edouard portent... but Aboubakar even being shy in stats gets to be the best goalscoring element in the team. And I've used several tactics, even this one, with several instructions even the DLF that Abou is natural at. But not as efficient as AFW. So yes, that striker role is, as I might see from my experience, the only good option in this match engine. As for the rest... Mez's were good in FM19 but here... dunno, I can't squeeze as much performance as I can from the BtB. The BtB are the all-terrain that a team needs and when in a short midfield like mine, having them Wide is the key. The only negative aspect is that sometimes both of them will press the same player. But that's a flaw in FM match engine. The rest, defense and whatnot, is not that relevant in this version as it was in previous. Dunno why but I had the best defensive records with this 3x5x2 as I had with 4x2x3x1 and this 4x3x3 version as well. The only difference I've seen in all tactics is the offensive output and goals scored. And of course, possession. TL;DR, check out Lisa's Spider 4x4x2 to see real goalscoring. And work from there. I changed from an AC Milan that was winning 1-0's with 4x3x3 dual Mezallas to winning 4-1's with Spider 4x4x2. Then I adapted it to my style and playing with 3 CB's and I'm consistent with 3-0's over the season.

Zealand, your videos are great. I've learned so much. But I've got to tell you this. You don't have to play narrow. Your wingers will get into the box regardless. The width option tells your player how wide to use the space. By playing wide you force your opponent to defend wider than they intended, and open up space like the channels to create more space for your strikers or forward running midfielders to use. That's why by default, attacking tactics are wider and defensive tactics are narrower. Think about when you play counterattacking strategy, you may want to play narrow and fast, drive the ball center and forward upon winning the ball and let you fast strikers to chase, if you play wide in this situation, your players will consider passing the ball out wide, this will slow you count down.

Love the attribute tests....would that sort of thing be feasible for TRAITS, as well? I've had players with "likes to round keeper",but i don't know if it ACTUALLY helps them score more, or I just blindly believe it does.

Nice video! You have mentioned that you like to employ a HB/Anchor man/DLP in the DM position, but why not a defensive midfielder?
