I’m a huge fan of Coleman but I love my Whisperlite International so much so that I have 3 🤣. Also a pretty cool old backpacking stove is the Optimus 8R or the Optimus 99 ( I have both and absolutely love them as well! )

This 550b is even better when running on kerosene (exactly the fluid they sell for lighting a grill). Its got more energy in it, doesnt smell so bad and is not flammable in itself ! Mine is older than 10 years, too.

IF you don't mind preheating. There is no "instant lighting" with kerosene. How is that "even better"? Maybe kerosene doesn't smell that bad to you, but once you spill that in your pack, it ain't coming out until after a couple of laundry cycles. No argument that it's a safer fuel, though. What do you use to preheat? I tried fire paste, which works, but leaves a bunch of crap behind. Ended up just using alcohol with an old nasal spray bottle with the dip tube removed. That was enough preheat fuel for about a week. Great stoves!

Just let it run on high to get it running as it was designed. The more you try to throttle it, the longer it takes and the greater your chances of flooding the generator. Pump it up, hold your flame to the burner and turn it to high/light and let it do its thing. Follow the instruction on the stove. They work. Used one in the Army before the Army started buying them. Used and abused it for over 20 years on active duty. Great stove. Never failed me. Had to straighten out some dents and ding every now and then, but that just takes a minute and a pair of pliers.

@@TonyHob If that's how it always goes, that's a problem. But, it's not the stove. The 550B is probably THE fastest lighting liquid fuel stoves ever built. I can't really tell how long yours took here because you used jump cut edits. From match strike to ready to cook, it should only take about 20-30 seconds on the coldest days. Hot days under 10. And that's without jump cut edits. Haha! I know what a flooded generator looks like because I wasn't born doing it right. I used to try to throttle it at the first sign of flare. No longer. I have a much larger collection of stoves than my wife is comfortable with and learned a lot over many years. To paraphrase the late Texas senator Phil Gramm, "I own more stoves than I need, but less stoves than I want." He was talking about guns, not stoves........ Please don't get defensive, I'm trying to help you here. Just trying to get across to let the stove start at full throttle, as designed, in keeping with the instructions that are printed on the side, that Coleman engineers worked hard to develop so that we would have the best, fastest lighting liquid fueled stoves the world has ever seen with no preheating. They knew what they were doing. If you want a detailed explanation of the instant lighting theory of operation for this or any other Coleman stove, just let me know and I'll give you the "How it works" rundown. I want YOUR light ups to be quick and clean like MY light ups. One area where folks tend to have issue when they open the valve before they have their lighter or match lit. I know, when you try to record, that's when things go their worse. The only reason to mess with the control valve during light up is if it's NOT pushing full throttle if the gas tip gets clogged, which you'll be able to tell by sound immediately. Then a fast turn to low and immediately back to high will poke the needle through to gas tip to remove the obstruction. I add a step if I haven't run a particular stove in a long time. BEFORE pumping, I loosen the fuel filler cap and cycle the valve through its range of operation from off to low stop and back a couple of times, then tighten the cap and proceed as usual. Loosening the filler cap releases the pressure so that no fuel will be forced into the generator while I'm cleaning the gas tip. If you wait until it's lit, it should still be ok, just cycle it to low and back to high as quickly as you can. Sometimes, stuff happens. Like a gust of wind that snuffs your lighter or match at just the wrong moment. TURN IT OFF and start again. If you wait, fuel will pool in the burner chamber which won't hurt anything, you just get yellow flames for a while until that pool burns off. If you are getting yellow sooty flames, it's not right. You can't do a jump cut in real life. Numerous people have come to me or sent a message or commented to thank me for showing them how to light their Coleman stove(s). I tell them, "No problem, just remember to RTFM, it's printed on the stove. " Remember, though they are the same size, flames look bigger at night. haha! Have a great day!

I saw the Cloeman exponent at the pawn shop. They want 57 dollars for it. looks like a really easy stove to operate and keep going for years. can you tell me if there are still parts around for it ? 👍
