My Fastest Traditional Bow by Daylite Archery

Спорт

I decided to test my Daylite Archery horsebows. They are made of modern composite materials such as carbon fiber and fiberglass so it is not fair to compare historical horn sinew composite bows in terms of performance but still a fun experiment to find out the performance of these bows using a chronograph.
The two Korean Asiatic recurves are made by Daylite Archery: www.daylitearchery.com/20
Arrow Speed Summary:
___Light Arrow___
Korean Daylite Monarq 95lb@31"
with 31 gram arrow (478 grain): 282 fps, 225 fps (hit the rod), 282 fps, 276 fps, 270 fps, 271 fps, 250 fps, 262 fps, 259 fps
Korean Daylite Majesty 60lb@31"
with 31 gram arrow (478 grain): 203 fps, 209 fps, 219 fps, 203 fps, 208 fps, 223 fps, 224 fps
Hungarian fiberglass bow 50lb@28"
with 31 gram arrow (478 grain): 158 fps, 157fps
Turkish fiberglass bow 35lb@28"
with 31 gram arrow (478 grain): 139 fps, 137 fps, 138 fps
___Heavy Arrow___
Daylite Monarq 95lb@31"
with 65 gram arrow (1003 grain): 183 fps, 199 fps
Daylite Majesty 60lb@31"
with 65 gram arrow (1003 grain): 159 fps, 169 fps, 157 fps,
This is not Guinness world record speeds, I believe the fastest traditional bow was something in the 400s fps with an extremely light arrow

You void the warbows warranty. It’s not impressive. The secret of fast arrow is just low gpp. I saw a longbow get 300fps with 2.5 gpp. It is more impressive to get high speed with heavy arrows

@@pyramid_scheme_termination3655 well- if you're talking about the shrew longbow that got 300+fps at the super low GPP- that is in fact impressive! And it's impressive because it doesn't void the warranty. Shrew bows and bodnik bows have an insane 30 year no minimum GPP warranty. It's impressive because that bow shot an arrow at 3gpp and was completely fine! And it's a similar thing with Korean bows. Daylite doesn't have a warranty that specifies minimum gpp- and I've even heard that they dry fire some of their bows as quality assurance. I don't know if that's true, so take that with a grain of salt. Again, the impressive thing here is that the bow can handle 5gpp with no problems. . Of course, high speeds with heavy arrows is impressive because it shows the efficiency of the bow-- but heavy arrows are always more efficient than light arrows. Shoot a heavy enough arrow and you can get almost 100% efficiency out of any bow. I'd say being efficient with a light arrow, and thus being able to shoot a light arrow without damaging the bow, is most impressive.

dont worry about the arrow weight on the heavy bow. if i converted it correctly it is about 5 gpp on the 95lbs @ 31´´ with the 480gn arrow. Korean bows made with modern materials can take that without taking any damage. they are testing dry fire during their quality assurance alot. its very impressive. i once saw a bow being dry fired over hundred times without breaking. doesn't mean its okay or that anyone should do it. its a lot more dangerous tho with a laminated bow with no carbon and fibreglass in it and should always be avoided. it just showcases how durable these traditional design bows made with modern materials can be. but to be on the save side. the recommended arrow weight for korean bows is about 7-8 gpp. nice video btw keep it up

@@HistoricalWeapons I dunno many modern compounds are hitting 270-280 FPS with 400 grain arrows at normal draw lengths. I’d argue it is comparable. Obviously If your drawing a flagship compound at 31 inches at 70lbs with a 300 something grain arrow (or whatever IBO speed ratings are) you can see 340+ on certain bows. But most bows have IBO’s in the low 330’s even 320’s which in the real world at 28 inch draw, 400+ Grains arrows and 60-70lbs is more like 270-280. The thing is speed bows have really aggressive cams and small valleys making them less comfortable to shoot. The industry is in a “shoot ability” before speed ATM

Your best result here, 282 fps at 5.03 gpp, does seem much better than even Adam Karpowicz's numbers on traditional composite Turkish bows. For instance, Karpowicz's 92.2lb@28" flight bow managed only 242.3 fps at 4.74 gpp. Of course, you've got an extra 3 inches of draw, so it's not a perfect comparison. Karpowicz's 105.5lb@27" flight bow got to 282 fps, but at 3.4 gpp rather 5. Even 250 fps is pretty good at 5 gpp. That's about like Karpowicz's 136@30" war/target bow shooting 245 fps at 5.4 gpp. Modern materials make a difference.

I make 282ft/s 192mph. That's practically a rocket in arrow-speed terms from a non-compoud bow. Love to see what range that would achieve at 40-45 degrees. If you think it possible your bow may fail, wear protection, especially with carbon fibre parts. Protect your head, especially face, as well as hands & arms. The manufacturers should be able to tell you the lower safe limits of arrow weight for their bows. I'm a big fan of Korean bows, even before the "War of Arrows" movie. Keep up the good work Jack. BTW my ancient Chinese crossbow lock/trigger is held up in PRC due to the Chinese new year 2-3 week holiday. Won the bidding onebay for a nice looking 70lb Chinese made bow for the prod, £75 inc postage. Buying within the UK may save quite a hit in tax/duty if I'd bought direct from the PRC, so it was a fortunate opportunity for one to come up for sale here. Stephen Selby reckons their usual power stroke was only 20 inches or so, but I'll probably go for at least 30" arrows, so 24-26" power stroke to make the most of the prod/bow's performance.

@HistoricalArchery Well, who is not on a budget? 😉 But it is very interesting to read about the results of Adam Karpowicz trials, who became famous for his expertise to bild such bows. He made lots of them, war bows, flight bows etc., in different sizes and draw weights. His 44" flight bow shot a 204 grain arrow at 125.5# with an initial speed of 315 fps. But if you don't build such bows on a regular basis on your own, you can't afford such trials with different horn bows, indeed. But it makes me thinking that horn bows are superior to modern bows if you leave the leisure time level of 35-45# and get into a more serious range of 90+# (which I am actually not able to handle).

i recently interested on archery, and one thing i understood quickly, is the strength limits. if you are unable to stay 10 seconds with your 50lds bow at 28",it's too much for you, very too much, your real choice would be approx 30 or 35lbs (if you want to shoot one hour long) ! if you think the maximal speed is the goal of archery, you are totally "out" you'll have certainly more fun with a 35lbs recurve !

I reeeeeeeally want to buy a maxed draw weight Majesty. I'm shooting a 65# Qinghai right now which is designed for strength test not shooting (did not know when I bought it, oops) but yeah it seems to be the only serious modern materials horsebow on the market. I saw a bow made of carbon nanotubes that was a traditional takedown horsebow but it had an extremely disappointing poundage of 20#. Good luck even finding light enough arrows for that lol. Also I could be totally off here, I don't understand physics at all but I think the arrow will take on the energy of the string no matter how light it is provided the arrow spine can take the energy put into it. It's not really dry firing I don't think, mostly about making sure your arrow is able to absorb the energy by tensile strength not sheer mass Oh and question, how and where are you ordering all these proper warbows? I can never find any over a puny #70

calculator in hand with a 65 gram arrow you got fewer joules than with the 31 one. I assume it's due to the geometry of the bow built for light arrows, but you recorded about 13 more joules it would seem that the 60 pounder has greater efficiency than the 95 pounder, this is strange

@@HistoricalWeapons so a Manchu bow would push a very heavy arrow having many more joules. or the two bows with arrows calibrated for them are equivalent It's also curious that the 95 lb. has a power similar to a warbow with a slightly higher rate, while the 60 always has greater efficiency. I agree with you if I had to choose a bow for all situations I would use the 60.

It would be really interesting to see which speed you can get if you'd shoot the Monarq with a lighter arrow. You used 478 grain in this video and got 282 fps. You've probably seen that "Combat Archery Switzerland" recently tested their 75# Kaya (Korean Bow) with a 398 grain arrow, and got to 287 fps, slightly more than you. And the most extreme test with heavy bow and light arrow I've seen was done by the German modern recurve shooter Thomas Brugger, who shot his 150# modern Recurve bow with a 280 grain arrow, and got 350 fps. The 478 grain you used in this video is 70% more arrow weight than the 280 grain Thomas Brugger used. So if the speed would correlate linearly (which it obviously does not), then shooting your Daylite Monarq with a 280 grain arrow would result in a speed of 481 fps. That's completely unrealistic, but it would be super interesting to know what actual value you'd get if you'd repeat this speed test with a 280 grain arrow. I've seen people mention that Korean bows are supposedly fine to even dry fire, so can you maybe do another test with such a super light 280 grain arrow on your Daylite Monarq? I'd love to see the results!
