I am thankful for this podcast because I didn’t grow up having positive male influences, so seeing young Black men establishing their own safe space to discuss important topics that anyone, but specifically people of color can relate to is NEEDED and I have found it very helpful with how I engage others, especially men. Keep up the great work fellas!

Thank y’all so much for touching on the DV within the NFL. I saw a comment on your last post asking to talk about it and i def thought the response to the persons comment was disheartening. I know Duke talked about decision making but i feel like that’s out the window when it comes to domestic violence. Call it exactly what it is, that’s not his first time beating on that girl and A LOT of NFL players get away with DV and the NFL covers it up. Thank you to Omar for saying that the CTE thing is a cop out because it is. PHYSICAL ABUSE IS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. It’s about power and humiliation. I’m sorry but we’re not giving excuses to these ppl. And Duke is right, the only way this is going to change is if y’all call each other out. I notice men fall FLAT when it comes to calling each out on the B.S. and it hurts black women THE MOST. We suffer the most when y’all do not protect us and call out each other out. So thank y’all for speaking up etc

If you have a close relationship with your mom, you want to marry a woman she also approves of. Real life ain’t the movies, man. I don’t even know why any woman would want to marry into a family where the mother-in-law don’t really wants to have her as her daughter. That’s just a disaster waiting to happen.

@@thetruthsayer8347 it’s not that she doesn’t approve of her. She actually said my girlfriend is a nice girl. My mother is just a “traditionalist”. She likes to keep things close to the Nigerian culture. So she “prefers” women from places like Ghana that share close to the same background. I fully understand that my life is not a movie , and I love my mother but at the end of the day , it comes a time where you have to stand up for my girl then I will do that. She has done right by me so far. I’m willing to step on some toes if this is who I will be with for the long run

In respect to the halftime segment, glad you acknowledged men needing to hold their friends or men they care about accountable when they are violent/aggressive towards women and making poor decisions. Guys NEED to be checked when they are being intimidating and hurtful to the woman in their life so it does not escalate to what we see in the news.

I've learnt to wish my family well when it pertains to relationships. I once told my sister that I didn't approve of her relationship. She wanted me to be supportive. I told her it didn't sit well with me had I kept it in and not say anything. She ignored me. We stopped talking for 2 years and their relationship ended. I hated that we stopped talking but we're in a great place now. However, when it comes to her relationships, I mind my own business even if the red flags are going off.

I grew up in a Haitian household and I wouldn't introduce my significant other to my family members over the holidays because I don't want my partner to be overwhelmed by judgemental Haitian comments. The holidays themselves can be overwhelming. I would rather introduce my partner at a time where there aren't too many influences around us. I do care about my immediate family member's opinions but at the end of the day, it's up to me to decide.

This topic is very important because I have a cousin who brings women around the family every year and to me personally that’s a no no. I fee if you both have been dating over a year then it should be ok to bring him or her around family. Bringing someone you love and trust around your family is kind letting them know that your somewhat in my family now. I can honestly say I’ve only brought one woman around my family. I agree with checking your family if they disrespect your partner. I've been in a position where my partner's sister was coming for me and he didn't say anything. It was after the fact when I mentioned it to him he says he was wondering why she was talking so crazy ... While I'm thinking why didn't you say something? It bothered me greatly.

First five minutes hit home because I just met my new partners family a few days before thanksgiving. Worst family meeting experience I’ve ever had and it makes me uncomfortable even talking about it. I’ve always been the girl that families love, so much so that I’ve built close relationships where me and my previous partners step mom would FaceTime and text almost daily. They would even invite me over without him, and for a short time we stayed in touch even after the relationship ended. So this experience was totally left field for me, or maybe it was a bruise to my ego because I’m always used to being liked 🤷‍♀️. Meeting my new partners family was sprung on me and we’re fairly new (one month) so it was a lot. On top of me being naturally reserved around people I just met, his father was not welcoming at all. My partner left me alone for most of the visit and his father gave me the third degree every chance he got, it felt like an interrogation. I did not feel welcomed or friendly vibes and I felt some questions were inappropriate and unnecessary such as “how many piercings do you have and where are they” or “where did you wake up this morning” (referencing if I had spent the night with/slept with his son). I felt so uncomfortable my hands started to shake and my answers weren’t straight, which doesn’t leave a good impression on them either ( my reaction could come off as a liar or even ditzy when i was really just nervous). My partner chalked it up with “that’s just how my dad is with everyone” and from his cold exterior interactions with the rest of the family that was there, I don’t doubt that. But i feel if that’s true I shouldn’t have been thrusted into that environment let alone have to handle it alone (i expressed my nervousness before we got there so my partner knew). Needless to say I am not looking forward to being around his father ever again and that’s not a good way to start off a relationship. I try to brush it off and think well “I’m dating his son not his dad/family” but this is tough to me because I’ve always valued family and feel it’s extremely important to have a good relationship. I guess I’ll wait and see how this will play out 🤷‍♀️

Note that even when my partner tried to step in and save me from the line of questioning his father would instantly shut him down even saying “don’t say anything, I’m talking to her not you”. Mind you we are adults, mid twenties. So i was taken aback by that interaction alone.

There needs to be boundaries. If a man’s mother is making slick comments towards his partner, the mother doesn’t have respect for her son. Ultimately, his choice of partner is a product of his decisions (thereby being the indirect subject of the mother’s criticism). The expectation that a woman should let a man “mediate” after an incident is ridiculous. Especially, if the man knows how his mother is and it’s a reoccurring issue. That’s equivalent to throwing your partner to the wolves. Which can create trust issues in a relationship. IMO, those Slick comment can be viewed as parental sabotage.
