I have worn them for last 40 years, all the classic jackets made in uk are great, sized properly, they have between a 6 inch to 10 inch chest tolerance for layering so fit properly when used for intended purposes, ie shooting ,horse riding etc. Modern style now are all over place with sizing. My personal favorite is the international motorcycle jacket. Next is the discontinued solway as its in the heavyweight material. My Bedale is a good around go to jacket . Over the years ive owned most models and still keep ten. Don't think ill go for any of the new ones due to odd fitment.

At 6ft ,15st 8 my XXL Barbour duke was a little snug . My Barbour race parka was an XXL and was huge on me . My XL bedale i bought off second hand had a 56 in chest , so i sold that and bought a Beaufort XL with a 52 inch chest , big enough for layering . For practicality, Beaufort is the best . Not just because you can wear it for 3 seasons but the rear poachers pocket, which is massive ! To give you an indication of how big it is . I fitted not 1 or 2 , 5 or 6 but 16 toilet paper rolls with ease inside . So big enough to fit your gloves , scarf , hat plus room to carry a 4 pack of beer !

Interesting. I've had mine for about the same time (maybe 7 years?) and I'm disappointed at how thin the cotton is. In that time I've sent it back for repair at least 3 times. And its going back again because of a tear in the sleeve. I did some research and compared both Bedale, Ashby and Beufort with my mother in laws old one to see if they have gone to a thinner cotton. Yes and no, the three mentioned seem to be 6oz, whereas the far more robust one mother in law has is 8oz Moorland (which has been discontinued). That is a shame, I feel like the three 'classic' Barbours should come in a thicker cotton version to make them more robust and longer lasting if that is what the customer wants. Honestly I don't stress mine at all, mainly on the drive to work so I've been a bit disappointed. Though the repairs have been done very well.

It is certainly a grail item, but as such I only want a made in England model. Having said that, it will have to be on the vintage market as I can't afford the new price. I make do with a Canadian wax cotton jacket made in similar style.

I’ve wanted one for a while and tried on a few. Sadly at 6’3” and slim I found the sleeves were too short on the Beaufort I tried that fitted well on the body, a size up and it’s too big in the body. They say on the website the Border is for taller gentleman with a longer body and sleeves, but when you click on the measurements the sleeve length is the same as the Beaufort? So I’m confused. They were originally meant for shooting and riding horses, so the traditional models are fuller in the body. Another negative is that you can’t wash them. So they will start to smell after a few years. P.S. The made in Britain designs have 100% cotton linings as far as I know.

I used to wear Gore-Tex jackets in the city for Scottish winters. However, for me, Goretex jackets don’t look stylish in an urban environment. I’ve got a Barbour Ashby and looks very stylish with jeans or corduroys. It’s also waterproof in Scottish winters but not like Goretex. I wear Goretex for outdoor sports but prefer to wear Barbour in cities. I think Barbour jackets’ prices are reasonable. Belstaff wax jackets are better choice for ones who can afford to pay more.

(Classic) Barbour sizing sucks: sleeves are too short, the stormflap at the neck too tight, the gap between size 38 and 40 is twice bigger (4inch!) than other sizes although I think the 38/40 are the most common sizes. I am oke with loose fit styles, but sizing is just weird. Knowing these jackets are here for decades just means Barbour does not give a f@ck. The Ashby on the other hand have better properties concerning sleeves and neck area, but the tailored fitting, the curvy look at the back misses the Barbour vibe.

Great work Vlad. Things I don't like is the dodgy information from Barbour where their clothes are made. I see lots of blogs about this topic these days, people are worried. People do obviously want to purchase and own a Barbour made in England, and so do I. Barbour is a brand with history, heritage, tradition and with the hallmark of great quality made in England. Who like to buy a Barbour jacket for 400-500€ made in Myanmar, Tunisia, Vietnam, Turkey or China. In which countrys the worker earns 10-20€ per day. And these countrys has nothing to do with Barbour, its only reason is cheap labour costs. But you don't se that on the price tag in the Barbour shops. Some may say they don't care about origin, only that the quality is fair. But for Barbour in my opinion it is vital. Barbour is a top brand and will only survive on its legacy. From what I understand are the "Classic" collection made in England and "most" of the wax jackets, but not all. If you purchase from an official Barbour store check the packaging sticker, the text will say "Country of origin" or "Pais De Origen". All the best.

I agree with you, I think they probably aren't transparent about where jackets are made, because then they would sell more of the ones made in England.

I sold Barbour jackets for 5 years. The quality difference between the English made jackets and the imported jackets is obvious….they just feel like cheap imitations. Plus the sizing for the imported jackets sucks…large, xl…really hard to get the right fit.

I have to agree the foreign made ones are lesser quality. I recently ordered 4 different jackets from next to find one I like. The two with ‘made in England’ were noticeably better quality. The Ashby was the poorest in terms of manufacturing quality/materials, and the Bristol had a broken stud and faulty stitching.

Worn my pretty new olive Beafort couple of days ago but it started raining, so when I got home I immediately hung it up to dry in our bathroom close to the heater. The next day, my jacket looked like I got it from a trashbin. I'm like: Did I really paid almost €400 euro for this thing? I ordered a Barbour wax and it came today and I just finished rewaxing my jacket, so hopefully it'll look nice again. I absolutely love the jacket but the jacket should cost max €200. Pretty sure we're not paying for the quality but solely for its aesthitic.

Oh no that's a bummer you put it near a heater. You can likely re-wax it. Contact Barbour customer service. I was caught out in a horrible downpour in my new Drummond Barbour jacket and it dried looking like new. It did take a good 12 hour plus to dry though.
