My Experience Removing Old Racing Stripe Decals

I spent several hours removing the old racing stripes off of my 2006 Mustang. They were 13 years old and cracked from the Florida sun. I used a rubber eraser tool and a heat gun. I tried using several versions of Goo Gone for the residue with no success. I even left it on for 24 hours. In the end it was perseverance and patience that got the job done.
If you're interested in the rubber eraser tool I used in the video here is a link where you can find it:

Have a 2019 Ram truck and had 12" wide rally stipes on the hood. (Avery 900). They cooked in the Florida sun for three years before cracking and making check marks. I tried heat gun at first but was afraid of getting the aluminum hood and paint too hot. For the same reason, I chose not to even try the erasers. I found the absolute fastest and best way is to use a spray can of "Aircraft Decal Remover" from O'Reily Auto parts. (Airplanes are made of aluminum too.) The trick is to spray and area about 12" x 12" and then covering the area with plastic for about 5 minutes. The plastic will save you time and money because it keeps the solvent from evaporating and drying out. The stripes come off easy with a plastic scraper. To remove the adhesive residue, I used "3M All Purpose Adhesive Remover" and a roll of paper towels. Again, the trick is to keep the solvent wet so cover it with soaked paper towels and plastic and let the solvent do all the work. Yes these are not cheap but my time saved and undamaged hood was well worth it.

@Glen Calvert, I"m told much of it has to do with the quality of the decal you purchase, but if you leave it on longer than 5 years, everything I've read says it's most likely going to be a pain in the butt. Not to mention if you take them off, the paint not covered by the decal will fade some giving a "ghosting" effect. I was originally going to put stripes back on and decided against it.

It might sound crazy but I used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove the leftover glue. Spray it on.. Wait about 90-120 seconds and start scraping using a plastic scraper. Have the garden hose rinsing as you scrap to dilute the oven cleaner. Glue came off like butter with no damage..

Years ago i removed all the stripes from my 1992 Toyota SR5. Used a heat gun and 3M adhesive remover. It was rare to see a large piece peel off. Most were small bits. I worked to removed the strioes over several weekends as my fingers could last more than an hour or two at a setting..overall looked grest but truck was only a few years old. Did the same with a Subaru and it had been on so long there was a fading of the laint around the decal and you could see where it used to be.

John Bechman, from what I'm told, it also depends on the quality of the decal that is used. But if it stays on for more than 5 years, no matter what the quality of the decal, it would have this problem.

Prep: Blankets and cushions to protect car (long lawn furniture cushions work great). Clothes with NO zippers, buttons etc, NO belt. Step stool. Step 1 - Heatgun + plastic scraper (a heavy duty bondo spreader works good. its thick with a medium taper to a good edge. wont bend too much when pressed hard) at low angle (nearly flat) and fast-medium speed to get the majority off. Run the heatgun ahead of the scraper and just do big long lines. Step 2 (IF needed) - Heatgun + plastic scraper at high angle (nearly perpendicular) and medium speed to get large glue areas off. You want it to literally push the glue along in one pass like scraping chemically removing paint. Dont let the glue get under the scraper, keep all the glue in front of the scraper. DONT point heatgun too close to scraper, it will deform. Step 3 - Heatgun + WD40 + RAG (not paper towel). Spray WD40 and Heat an area about the size of a piece of paper, soak the rag with WD40. Get the area VERY warm, NOT HOT. Step 4 - COLD scrape stubborn lines or glue buildups, then Step 3 them again after. Stay gold.

  • @DIYJeff

    3 жыл бұрын

@Joel Knueven, I only used one wheel but it did whittle it down to almost nothing left. Unfortunately, mine didn't come with instructions about not using it on plastic and I learned the hard way. It burns through the clear coat and paint quickly right down to the primer. What I ended up doing was still using it, but putting it on my cordless drill at low speed and really watching it to make sure it didn't burn through. But it's risky for sure. I had run out of options on getting the adhesive off the plastic. Goo gone wouldn't even touch this stuff.

I'd avoid vinyl stripes for any car as a "lesson learned". I have a 2015 charger that had the stripes, looked good for a while, then started cracking in the AZ heat. What I didn't know was water (? in AZ?) had gotten under the roof stripe over time and when the stripe started flaking off I noticed rust. CRAP! Karl Wright I had the same situation with my roof. I tried everything, heat and wheel for hours and nothing. What worked for me was a scraper blade (the ones with the handles and are about 4in wide). I flip it to the dull side and put tape over it so it doesn't scratch the paint. I head up the vinyl then scrape. Takes off a lot at once and no scratches. Use painters tape and every so often replace it because it'll start ripping and you wouldn't want it to rip all the way through to the point it scratches.

    What about goo gone?

@Wendy Grizer, I tried regular goo gone as well as the gel type that you can let sit for hours. Neither did anything.

Wow that Eraser seems to work well. I've got an old Bernie Sanders sticker on the back of my Prius that I need to remove; maybe I'll give this a try if the hemp oil doesn't work.

danr97123, it would easily take off any bumper stickers! I used the eraser tool a bit beyond its intended purpose. If you’re removing a sticker or decal off of fiberglass and not metal, be sure to keep your drill on a lower setting. The high setting will burn through the paint. But the high setting over metal is no problem.

@@DIYJeff Would you recommend not using it on glass? Most of my bumper stickers are on my window.

Lee Wood, it would work even better on glass. You can use the drills high setting for sure. It would take off a sticker leaving no residue in a matter of seconds.

I'm removing stripes on my car now. Same headache! I'm using heat gun and goo-gone... taking forever! Also using isopropyl alcohol which is a quicker removal. I'm going to go back over the car with a buffing compound and work on the faded paint. I believe the goo-gone is safer, but I'm bored and frustrated with this process. I think I will go pick up that stripe eraser to finish the job.

Glenn Brooks, The only thing to be careful about on the eraser is using it on fiberglass or plastic. If you use the low setting on your drill it's fine, but the high setting heats up the substrate to quickly and burns right through to it. On metal you can use the high setting all day and not be an issue.

Had the stripes on my 14 mustang removed "professionally." Pretty sure he used an eraser wheel because not long after moving to warmer climate i began to see the glue residue turn white. Now it looks spotty and horrible. Might as well get a new stripe on top of it till I decide to trade it in.
