As the phrase goes: 'All good things must come to an end' and sadly for me this was my final appearance in Handmade: Britain's Best Woodworker. I always knew if I was lucky enough to make it this far sculpture week was going to be an immensely difficult challenge. In this video I will go into more depth of my design idea for the bee and how I went about creating it on the programme. I will also reflect on my experiences on the show overall and float the idea of an 'ask me anything' style future video if there is enough interest in it. It genuinely was an incredible experience and I will always look back on it with the fondest of memories.
Welcome to all the new subscribers who have joined since the programme started and I hope you enjoy some of my other content on the channel😀.
As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

I think you should be thoroughly proud of your time on the show (which I think you are) - every week showed a real effort to produce top notch projects up to and including your final piece. I must admit I was really disappointed last week when your name was called out but it's definitely a "head held high" type moment, so well done Leo and thanks for giving me something to cheer along with on a Sunday. Anyway, time to stop arsing about with all your TV mates and get back in the workshop and showing us more great stuff. Cheers mate and well done!

The judges have a job to do and I think they were wrong that's the way it goes. I think the bee and hexagon is a good build and you are happy with it that what counts. Keep doing what your doing and that's great build video's. You keep making and I will keep watching, all the best ,Take care😁👍

Well done Leo. This was Such a good build in my opinion and I think I said on Instagram that you shouldn’t have gone. I won’t embarrass yourself or anyone else and say who I think Should have left. When it comes to Judging, I think, Much of it is down to personal taste. I’m not sure how they couldn’t see how Great the honey comb idea was! I’m So pleased to hear you say how you disagree with them regarding that and also to hear you say that you deserved to be there on merit. ABSOLUTELY you deserved to be there. I understand the imposter syndrome feeling but there was No imposter there from what I could see. Great job throughout mate. You Deserve to feel proud. 👍🏾

Loved watching you on the show Leo, and well done for getting as far as you did. Clearly the show is edited down and we don't hear all the comments, but I was a bit nonplussed at the judges not seeming to make a connection between your sculpture and the 'honeycomb' fame.

You are a shining example of how one can be strong and overcome adversity with self confidence and with the will and motivation to do so. You are a real role model. It has been a pleasure watching you and your fellow contestants over the last 5 weeks. You will be missed going forward - even Mel was in tears to see you go! Great show, great entertainment. Well done for being part of it. Take that experience and new found confidence and work with it. You’re going to do well. Token gesture definitely not. You were there on merit. Your work showed that. Hi I think it looks awesome and I love the outside being like the bees use. The only thing I would have possibly changes was the plywood wings, I would have used 5 mm Perspex so the inner wing could be seen through the back.

I agreed with the judges about the wing positioning and the head size (possibly needed some antennae too) but the frame really added some dynamism in my opinion. I would have preferred that you'd hung it from either outside edge of the frame such that it would have hung on the diagonal, but that's nitpicking.

I was sad to see you being knocked out, but the fact that you managed to hold up against all the others for so long just shows how good you are ... I hope you are immensely proud of how well you did ... you're the only one so far who's nearly had Mel in tears when she was announcing who was leaving 👍 Your bee, although not perfect, was far better than the one done by Claire who had a degree in fine art sculpture (supposedly) ... I think she'd have been put out if not for the challenge round ... I think a pair of wire wings would suit your sculpture better than the wooden version 😁 The centipede deserved woodworker of the week, although the caterpillar and dragonfly were not far behind (apart from the painting).

Thanks Barry. I think with a task like sculpture fundamentally it’s going to boil down to opinion on whether someone ‘likes’ it or not. With something like the garden bench for example you can judge it on aspects like comfort, ergonomics, design etc but sculpture is in the same ball park as art and that is about opinion. I guess if we all liked the same stuff the world would be a boring place. I just wasn’t able to convince the judges enough with my build to put me through to the following week. Gutted like but very proud of what I achieved 👍

With you all the way Leo. I couldn't face ploughing through the TV programme but I think your bee is fantastic. Quality and finish is superb. I have to agree about the position of the wings, they should have been set a bit further back on the thinner section. For effect and quality it's hard to understand why the judges voted you down. Reflects worse on them than you I would say. Concept is great and the effect of floating in the space inside the hexagon was very clever. I hope you did enjoy the experience and gained from it. I think the size is right. Domestic scale not monumental. What would you do with one twice the size anyway?

i think that as a competition its pre designed as to who goes out at what point. In the past 2 series there have been youtube woodworkers and all have gone out around the same stage, (in fact they have all had disabilities as well, last yrs was deaf) this doesn't distract from the skill of the contestants but does make me wonder, and not just about this show but all of them from masterchef to x factor. still enjoy it and was a brilliant performance by Leo from the 1st episode right the way through @@MaccyDat59

Appreciate the feedback pal, just said in another comment I guess with sculpture it’s all about opinion of whether you like it or not, there aren’t many more metrics to judge it on. I think in my previous builds the judges could factor in all kinds of factors like (for example the garden bench) comfort, ergonomics, design etc, but with any kind of artwork or sculpture you either like it or you don’t and maybe I just didn’t do enough to convince the judges. Gutted pal but proud in the same breath 👍
