MY DREAM eMTB VAN - VW Transporter

Ойын-сауық

Volkswagen Transporters are the ultimate way to travel with your mountain bike and kit and VW Transporters are absolutely brilliant bits of kit. After many many years of wanting I finally get to own my own. This Volkswagen Transporter T6 is pretty much the perfect van.
Here is the start of the mega build! I cannot wait to share more mods with you all.
Next up I want to fit out the back of the van and install some kind of electric charging station for my ebikes.

I know the excitment of having a van! I did this 3 theres ago, bought a panel van and had it converted to a full on camper for me and the family. Theres nothing like taking my bike (or our bikes), get some miles of fun trails and then cooking up a nice post-ride meal! Having a fridge full of cold drinks too is a massive bonus on those hot summer days.

Nice job sir, especially the 4 motion version which is my dream still after many a different 2wd biking van. I also like the fact that you have chosen the domestic version rather than a commercial version. As well as factory fitted and crash tested rear seat, you get better cost on tax and insurance over a commercial version. You also have better comfort as the rear springs aren't design to take a pallet of bricks. You also get heat, Aircon, insulation and headliner in the rear as well as electric points to the rear. Tailgates for the win, have you seen the tailgate awnings you can get, they are just effectively curtains that hang down from the rear tail gate no poles required.

Practically exactly the same as mine but I have orange bars and trims. I’m really looking forward to see what you do. I’ve had mine since may 19 and have been trying to figure out the best way to get my many bikes in plus being able to sleep in it. Currently looking at building a slide out tray for the bikes but don’t no of I should do it out of the back or the side door. I already have the kombi bed so I’m swaying to the side door and keeping all the back seats out. So much to do with these vans but there are limitations that bigger van would definitely solve. But still I’d never swap out my T6 for a crafter or sprinter haha

Nice van Rob, I had a 2005 LWB transporter converted into a camper, but upgraded a few years ago to a VW Crafter MWB. Allows me to stand up inside when changing out of wetsuits and cooking, handy for the older gentleman (Ahem). This year I acquired a BMW i3 Electric hatchbach, in a nice blue colour, whose name is either Bowie, as in "Blue, Blue Electric Blue", or Numan as in "Are 'Cars' Electric?" Or, at a push, Oasis as in "She's Electric....". Now I can get an inflatable SUP on the roof, 2 surfboards inside and my Vitus E-Sommet on the back window with Suction mounting cups. Still love my van, and its essential for overnights, but the car is super easy to drive, and cheap as chips. On a side note, please tell me your de-restriction chip has been notified to the insurance bods, on the off-chance that some mishap should occur (maybe you don't have to?) Thanks for all your work, it's extremely interesting stuff and the Forum is a fabulous resource. Best wishes with the VW and the T6 Forum is also exceptionally useful.

The Veedubs are rather nice vans, but are a tad on the small side for us taller riders. I found the VW too tight in the legroom and the Transit Custom, too tight in the headroom. I ended up with one of the last large Vivaro's with the LWB. I've kitted it out with a full width R&R, 100L water capacity for a heated shower, diesel heating and a 300w solar panel feeding two L-Ion batteries, connected to a 1000w inverter for my charging needs. I also have a rather large fridge and will be getting an oven too. Having all this means I have to take the front wheel out to get the bike in the van, but that's hardly an issue for me. I opted for barn doors, as i've fitted a 270 degree wing awning for loads of wet weather protection and gives me plenty of standing room, which a tailgate doesn't. If you'd like any detail on the fixtures/fittings i've used, drop me a line on the forum Rob. I only have 125bhp and find that is more than enough, so 250's bloomin mental. Watch out for how frisky you are with your accelerator, as you'll find your half drive shafts will wear significantly on the drive splines and will end up falling out.

Welcome to the van club. Trust me you will wonder how you ever survived without it. This is the start of the slippery slope. Soon you will start to think, hmm if it was just a bit longer, just a bit higher, just a bit wider - then you start over with a Crafter :-). My advice would be to go for lithium leisure batteries for your charging set up. The initial outlay will shock you but its worth it in the end. Easier to charge fast with high current, can be run to lower state of charge reliably and lighter than lead based. Generally much more tolerant of the abuse that charging E-bikes puts on them (fast, deep discharge). Dont be shy with the capacity either especially if you want to fill up a 700Wh battery a few times over a weekend. Pair them with decent quality inverter and you are literally living the dream :-) Enjoy!

I went T6 route just found it to be a target for robbing bastards .. broken into at trail centres 4 times, then it got nicked. Got a replacement broken into 3 times then it was nicked. They are are awesome but a target for sure. Since swapping back to an estate car had no issues. Shame as I love them.

Sucks to hear. I have a t5 campervan. I have a rooftop vent which I often leave open at the trails and then have a curtain blocking the back. I'd like to think that because it always looks like someone might actually be inside the van this deters theft. Maybe just wishful thinking
