People dismiss a dogs unsteady legs for old age but sometimes it's just sore paws. When a dog has sore paws he wont want you to touch them so you have to be creative. The way I cut my dog's nails is I place a bowl with a little milk (can mix it with some water) in it in front of him, he has to be lying down when drinking. Then I cut one nail. It takes time. You have to repeat the process. Sometimes I only cut four nails a day. It's made a huge difference in his life. He walks with more vigour, he sits and gets up way faster and easily.

This was perfect. We just adopted a senior dog a few days ago and she has been in a lot of discomfort, getting up and down. It’s a struggle, but I also see the very audible clicking. We have occasional crankiness at our other dog who usually minds their business. The struggle to get up. This gives me good intel and points to share with our vet this upcoming week. To hopefully medication as needed to give her some relief.

I'm so glad that I can text as much as I want in this comment section, Louis is such a good boy he knows he's helping you help others, I can read dogs very well and he is just letting you do the norm. He's used to this from you and plays along every time. RIP Lewis 💙. Thank you Luis for all you have done for us, you're such a good boy letting Daddy teach us how to take care of our fur babies. Thank you Andrew Jones for helping all of us help our pets. I'm sure you know how dachshunds front legs are and how it's hard for them to spread apart from the chest. That's the way my dachshund Chloe is and when I told the that's assistant that her front legs don't spread apart and be very careful when removing her tumor in her armpit. She told me when dogs are under they tend to be more relaxed and able to spread apart. As a pet owner I'm very aware of my dog in every way since I'm home everyday and she is my caregiver❤ I noticed her limping but I can't remember if it was right after surgery or a week or so later. If they accidentally put her arm apart more than it should go what muscle would they have torn or possibly hurt? I am not accusing I am just trying to figure out why after removing the tumor she now has this limp. When she walks her head Bobs up and down as she is not wanting to put too much pressure but yet she is walking on her left front leg. What's really strange is she prefers to run. I have noticed she will wait for me to get 12 feet in front of her when I ask her if she's ready to eat and then she runs into the kitchen. Now I know she has addictions like a cat does with a string. She has to chase the dogs along the fence when I'm outside no matter how hard I try to train her not to. She also still chases squirrels (God bless her) dachshunds love to Chase. I think I've wrote enough for now even though I have so much to ask. So reminder the question I have for you today is if her front legs were spread apart more than they should what muscle could possibly be injured? Should I be keeping her in the laundry room restricted of normal activities to help this healing process? Of course letting her out for potty breaks. Thank you for everything you do.😊👍💜 oh yeah one more thing, I'm able to pull her whole arm backwards towards her rear as she's lying down and if I were to try to stretch the arm forward towards her head she pulls back

We adopted a senior 🐶 plott hound 11. She was the best match for my senior golden this past November. This video really helped me identify what was wrong with her. I knew it was more than hip displaecia, because of how upset she would get about a few areas in her back. She was crated at the shelter around 7 years; which had health impacts but she is just as spunky as can be. Joint support has helped tremendously. Our vet gave her anti-inflammatory Rx, but we only use it very sparingly because I don’t want it to impact her internal health (liver and kidneys) which is good. We also gated the stairs, so she doesn’t climb them more than to go to bed. We lift her also as needed. I am looking forward to watching some of your other natural remedies videos. Quality of life is of paramount importance and you definitely have some 👍 tips.

Thank you so much for this video. I've just been looking for more information about degenerative myelopathy after my dog was diagnosed with it and came across you. My dog hates going to the vet, and with coronavirus I wasn't able to go in the room with him, so wasn't sure how much/how well they were able examine him. They said he had been difficult to handle, but it seemed that the pain was in his back. After going through your video, it seems the pain is definitely not in the back, but in the hip. Might film my dog's reactions to take with me to a future appointment so they can get a better idea of how to help us. Fantastic video, and very well explained.

Been watching your videos since my boy was a wee lad, he's now a senior and for the first time I have found him struggling to stand or walk at some points. He has stopped jumping up on to surfaces he used to leap at no problem, and drags his back legs (and gets tired more) on walks... Tonight I had to literally slide him downstairs on his bed so I could get him on the same floor as to door out to potty, not knowing what was wrong, in a panic... Thank you for your videos on how to help him, first place I went to for advice when I realized the signs were adding up to arthritis, hip dysplasia or some such. With these tips, I can better source what COULD be wrong and help ease his discomfort, while we wait for the appointment with the vet to do an exam. Gods all bless you, so glad I subbed to you all those years ago now! My boy Bran (like the muffins and Game of Thrones character... should have thought that name through better) and I both thank you.

He currently has Hypothyroidism, his Heart has a small amount of fluid around it, his inhalation and exhalation (breathing) was quite forced. About 6 months ago this all began to show. My GS woke up one morning a few days ago and was not able to move both hind legs , she is happy and is eating and is able to sit up , I use a sling to walk her. This is the most heart breaking thing to see. I did order 95% Curcumin which has flaxseed salmon oil and a few other things you mentioned would help. Vet said it was arthritis of the spine, hips were good (xrayed). Gave us pain killers and told us to come back every 6mths for bloodwork. Does this diagnosis sound accurate as he is getting progressively worse? I am going to try some of your more natural remedies but am thinking it may be degenerative myelopathy.

Thanks for the video. My 10 year old chihuahua has become growly at me within the past month particularly when I touch his right side. I notice he tends to bite his right hind leg. His walking is normal but I don't want to try to move his leg because I don't want to get bit. I can't get into to see the vet for another 3 weeks. Wonder if you had a video or can do a video on what you recommend for supplements.

Thanks for walking through these examinations. my vet's exam left a lot to be desired - no physical exam, just xrays which showed no spine or hip problems. So still trying to figure out the cause of limping and odd holding up of rear if running, some rear paw drag after 40min walk, not fully weight-bearing on left hind leg.

Darn it. Ok, I suppose going back into the vet is warranted. He prescribed Onsior (robenacoxib) 1 pill/day for 3 days to see if it helped (hasn't really). I reduced her activity and already give her turmeric though now that I've seen your pain management video, it looks like I need to be combining turmeric with another herb (forgot the name) to be most effective. Thanks for providing all this helpful information. It's great to have you and your series as a resource and to be able to refer back to it easily.

Thank you for this video. What about nerve twitching (fasciculation) in all 4 limbs and muscle atrophe along with going paralyzed in the back legs and then slowly going paralyzed in the front too? My dog had this happen but made a seemingly full recovery with a round of Prednisone with no issues for 7 months with no medication, then it suddenly started again with the back legs and now moving to his front legs again. He has responsiveness but no strength or control left. Any advise or opinion would greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello, I am new!!!! I am a new pet mom since Jan. My dog is 8. I took her to the vet because she had started eating only half her food one day midday and night and she was shaking and panting all night. She could not rest well. She looked as if she was cold or something. She would even squint her eyes at times. The vet examined her and x-rayed her. She said something she may have a pinched nerve. She found basically she may have arthritis. And to keep a look out for some other stuff as she went through a heat cycle in Aug. She gave her something for the pain and so forth but what can I do to help her rest at night.

My five year old beagle was diagnosed with a sports injury in his right rear leg after two vet visits due to coming in limping. After resting for weeks and taking anti-inflammatory drugs he seemed better. That is until he goes for walks for more than a few mins. He has has periods of tail drop since he was about 2 or 3 years old. Now he is five and has periods of walking like one hip is higher than other, especially after walks. Any recommendations? He is going to vet early next week and is on glucosamine and cartilage supplements. Any recommendations?

My dog has sudden random pains in his left hind leg, he will take off running from the surprise of the pain and sometimes he screams. He can walk just fine, if he has any arthritis it'd be in his paws (he's been walking slower, he's about to turn 11). This has been going on for years. My mom and I think it's a nerve. What's happening to him?

Wow you did more in this video than my vet did with my dog and I paid her 100. It’s heartbreaking for me. My dog seems to look like he’s loosing his muscles or something in his back legs. He goes on walks ok but can’t seem to climb anymore like lift himself to my car window so he can stick his head out which is his favorite thing to do. The doc has him on prednisone and pain meds. I’m not sure what to do. He seems to lost his appetite . Any advice ? Thank you

Great video with clear explications, and nice patient dog btw, who got the idea of making a video :-). What hollisitic remedies are there for DM? I m putting all emphasis on good food (80% meat and bones) and activity, swimming in particular. Do you consider this important or wishful thinking?

Thanks doc, Our 14 yr old bubba has continuing hip dysplasia and i try to help him to get down or up in a car by carrying him. We have him on powdered joint care and natural pain meds. He yelps sometimes and when i tried to pet him this morning tried to bite me out of a deep sleep. I barely touched his shoulder. He's able to walk, and still enjoys walking in the dog park in our complex. Could the areas that he doesn't want to be touched nerve damage, cancer? Your advice for castor oil when he swolled a plastic bag, saved us from putting him down. We went to 2 vets, they wanted to operate, $$$$. Last vet was Tennessee college for vet care. Sad what vets are all about today $$$$ not animal care
