My DJI Support Experience: I’m Disappointed. [DJI Mavic 3 Active Track 5 Crash]

Ғылым және технология

Well, I finally sent my Mavic 3 for repair and got it back from DJI. I decided to share my experience in regards to how they dealt with the repair so you know how it will go if you ever have to get support. What do you think? Was DJI in the wrong? Was I? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

    @@carsonmtech Hello, Carson. We are sorry for the belated response. We have checked your case and watched your video. Also, we have forwarded your case and video to our designated teams. Here, we will bring you updates. The very first thing that comes into our eyes is that we saw you once enquired about the content of our after-sales policy. You may refer to Limited Warranty Policy: What This After-Sales Policy Does NOT Cover? × Crashes or fire damage caused by non-manufacturing factors, including but not limited to, pilot errors. More details can be seen from here: www.dji.com/uk/service/policy?site=brandsite&from=footer Then, on most occasions, when it comes to flight, the environment is the first thing that needs to be noticed by pilots. We always wish our customers to keep observing their surroundings before, while, and even after the flight. Kindly know that no matter Active Track 5.0 or Vision System, they both function with conditions, which is also mentioned in our User Manual(P23&P26) as well:dl.djicdn.com/downloads/DJI_Mavic_3/DJI_Mavic_3_User_Manual_v1.4_en.pd While watching your video, your advice on Active Track inspires us a lot. We will forward it to our designated teams and reflect on your case to see whether there is an effective way to notify users of the tree branches. Last but not least, some issues you feedbacked in the video have been checked. We will learn from your case and hope to improve the service, doing better and better. So you bought a Mavic 3 and didn’t put insurance or DJI refresh? That wasn’t smart on your part. Also just so you know the drone vision system cannot see twigs or power lines, cables etc you get the point, so doing active track in these kind of environment should be taken with great care. I know you don’t want to hear this but watching your video of the crash is totally user error. And DJI sending you a replacement was very nice on there part. Try not to crash this one and good on your part for getting the DJI care refresh. I don’t have DJI care refresh. But I use StateFarm and my mavic 3 is covered for even flyaways. Also if you notice In the active track advertising the Mavic 3 wasn’t avoiding twigs but tree trunks big deference there. When the leaves grow back on the limbs the drone will be able to see the entire tree. That’s how it’s always been with mostly all drones with obstacle avoidance. Enjoy your new replacement the Mavic 3 is a great drone.

  • @carsonmtech

    @carsonmtech

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don’t disagree with your sentiment, however, the advertisement clearly states it can track “in complex environments” which as a whole of where I was flying (out in the open) I do not believe to be complex. Yes, when it came to the tree in the middle of nowhere, that was random, but still, I believe that the drone should have in some form seen OBJECTS, I mean, we are talking the same system that had a number of phantom brake checks when I was flying the day of the crash, but it won’t see a clump of tree branches? Needless to say, I appreciate your comment and to hear from both sides!

  • @mr02gixxer1000

    @mr02gixxer1000

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@carsonmtech complex environment doesn’t mean tree twigs and power lines etc. you get the point. Again if you notice in the tracking DJI video with the guy on the mountain bike, the Mavic 3 was avoiding tree with leaves not twigs. I mountain bike and when the leaves start growing back on the trees in the spring time witch is not for away. I will put mine to the test, and i won’t be surprise if it does well or exceeds my expectations. Because my Mavic 2 did pretty good tracking me in the wilderness and the Mavic 3 tracking is way better! The drones don’t know what to do with twigs etc not even the skydio.

    thank you very much for this video! I'm a novice and no where near being a pro or seasoned flyer. I was interested in DJI but after watching your video I'm not sure if I want to invest in a DJI product. I don't have the youtube stroke or knowledge that you have and I'd be willing to bet you that a guy like me would've had to pay to get the drone repaired or replaced within the 30 day warranty. I'd imagine that other drone companies would've tried the same thing and guys like me wouldn't know any better but this video has put a bad taste in my mouth for DJI. I totally agree with you that you were in the right here but it took some fighting to get the issue resolved in the way it should've been handle for the get go. Thanks again for the video!

    Yes, I certainly believe that would’ve been the case. If it weren’t for my channel and influence, they likely wouldn’t have budged. As long as you get DJI Care though or another form of insurance, DJI products are absolutely fantastic, as I mention towards the end of the video. I still love all my drones and gear from them and will continue to recommend them, especially as a beginner pilot. Just make sure to get your gear insured and you should be all set!

    You provided DJI with vital and valuable information regarding its DJI Mavic 3 Active Track system glitches which they no doubt can't ignore. I have no doubt they have an R&D department which has gone back to the drawing board to deal how to improve that system so it will not be vulnerable to the situation that brought your drone down. I believe that they will find a fix thanks to you. Good job. I will continue to have faith in DJI. I certainly have faith in you. Thanks for following up on this.

    Hello Carson, that is the hard way of learning: Advertisement is most often not th whole truth. It is good to see that your e-mails changed DJI to pay for it. But I do not go with your RECOMMENDATIONS! Your REC No 3 "Do not attempt to gaslight customers" have to be the top one! Your REC No 1 "Don't make promises..." will be my number 2 (- but thats what all companies also do)! Your REC No 2 "Incude ... disclaimer in DJI Fly App" NOOOOOO do not popup any useless stuff during flight. This is where Fimi beats DJI hands down in my opinion,I am now on my second replacement of a fimi mini,first one i sent back had a camera lens that started fogging up once the cold weather started,the gladly replaced the drone after sending them some video footage as proof ,plus my drone was 10 days out of warranty . The replacement i got had about 3-4 pretty big issues so i sent some more video proof and now am waiting for my second replacement which is on the way now.I think DJI didn't want to take responsability for their drone and they knew their firmwares were not perfect.Shame on DJI ! I am a DJI lover too but it's things like this that make me not keep all my eggs in one basket with drones and give the smaller companies a shot.All in all my experience with Fimi so far have been great plus each time i sent the drone back they offered me a free battery with the replacement drone.Big bonus.I own 2 DJI drones so far and i don't dare do the kind of tests that you do with them,not yet anyways atleasdt until my channel grows to your level and i can afford to replace said expensive piece of equiptment...lol

    I think if you go back to the start. When you first got your drone. You are asked and are supposed to read the manual, in the manual it clearly advises not flying in the environment you were flying in. You also have a safety manual that clearly spells out what dji won’t be responsible for . There are limits to AT 5.0 . You are also responsible when your drone is flying in AT “at all times”. I think you got a good deal here and should be thankful . Yes as part ambassador or someone that reviews dji drones , you probably deserve a break. What you showed in the video was 1 you were not in control 2 risky environment. So maybe you should be a bit more humble…

    I’m glad you got a positive resolution on this. That being said you’re correct, DJI touts this drone with being on par with Skydio in regards to obstacle avoidance and even tho it’s not perfect the promo videos promote it as such! Giving a false sense of security. It’s sad with so much evidence proving it was the failure of active track that caused the crash they were adamant that it was somehow your fault. You shouldn’t have had to fight tooth and nail to get this product replaced! I guess customer service is not top priority with DJI as we all know. We as consumers have to hold them accountable! Great job Carson.

    Hi Kim from Australia here, very interesting Video, I thought you were quite calm and handled the difficult situation. Unfortunately, the biggest problem appears to be the 1st person that was put in charge clearly did not have the authority and I guess a lot of people would have gone along with what she said as well as paid out for the repairs. Thankfully you finally had someone that had the authority, they always say a 1 of replacement so that everybody else does not jump on the bandwagon. They should have replaced the drone as they did without any extras I believe as you had all the other components. You feel you are out of pocket which is true but if you did not get the refresh package which you decided to get it would have only been a small amount, except for the frustration and all the time you put in to not let them beat you. Its a very good lesson, if you feel that you are being hard done by keep trying but in a calm manner and hopefully you will succeed. It was a bad experience for you but I feel it ended well with your calm persistence. ( Never give up if you believe you are right.)

I am trying to connect the DJI controller to my phone, but it says "RC not connected to mobile device". I have another drone and tried to use that cable, but I get the same thing. The DJI remote charges, so I don't beleive it's an issue with the remote. Have you heard of this, or have any suggestions?

    If I were in charge of DJI support, I would have issued you a replacement of one complete drone and accessories that are included in a standard purchase as if you selected the item off the shelf from our store. Saying all that is my opinion, and now after I am enlightened on the way this actually took place by DJI and it’s support team, I will not purchase nor recommend DJI to anyone. Thank you Carson very much for your videos. Peace.

    Persistence, persistence, persistence + detail = results! But isn’t it aggravating that YOU had to spend so much time with this AFTER you had already spent so much time writing in detail the problem. Good for you! DJI honestly needs to train their customer support to the level of knowledge the management has. DJI is in the business of making money through the sale of “Care Refresh” - however their attitude seems to be if you don’t have it shame on you. That is TERRIBLE customer support. Just found your channel- thanks for sharing!

    Hi Carson, I crashed my Mini 2 and it ended up looking like your Mavic 3 with the camera just hanging there. I didn't have Care Refresh or insurance. I took him to the DJI shop and they said it would cost $170 to fix, I gave the go ahead and two weeks later they sent back a brand NEW Mini 2.I can't complain with that.

    You are lucky you have a KZread channel which went in your favour at the end of the day but for us non youtubers we would had to pay the bill and yet I always thought dji had good customer service but this has definitely changed my view now and I had the same issue with active track 5 the m3 flew straight into a tree 🌳 in really good conditions and daylight fortunately my drone managed to recover and I do have care refresh but still not the point because I still would of had to pay a fee for repair that was nothing to do with my inputs and I feel they are mis leading people with there promotional video. Great video and thanks for sharing 😁 BAD BAD BAD DJI NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE 👎

    I love the Stockholm Syndrome reference!! Sadly, the customer service experience you received is typical of most companies these days. That said, you were politely persistent and that worked up to a point. You should not have had to go through all of that (especially the false determination that you were at fault). They replaced your Drone, that is good but they should have addressed your concerns about not having paid attention to the evidence you provided. And they should have addressed the issue of the false advertising and given you a discount on the DJI Care for your trouble. Keep up the great work. I would not be where I am with my droning without your video lessons.

    Sorry, it was your fault. If you had read the manual, you would have seen on pg 61 under Flight Environment Requirements section 2 that you should stay away from trees. Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems(APAS) are not there to replace the pilot but to assist them. It is your responsibility to understand the systems and their limitations before using them so that you can operate the drone safely. At the time of the incident on December 14, there were at least two videos posted on KZread where people had crashed their Mavic 3's into trees and one near miss where a prop hit a twig during user tests of the APAS. If you had reviewed any of that material pre-flight, you may have planned your route differently, but honestly I don't think it would have made a difference. Active Track 3.0 is just too dangerous to use, because the Mavic 3 maneuvers too radically and erratically to stay on station and won't maintain consistent separation with the subject. Did DJI gaslight you? I think they tried to, but the answer might a little more murky. Given the crazy number of messages that flashed across the screen when the Mavic 3 collided with a tree, it would have been easy to mistake the "engine idling" message as occurring pre-crash rather than post-crash as it actually did. I have also had several incidents with the Mavic 3 where the logs didn't match the video evidence, because the downlink was corrupted thanks to a bad RC Pro. As far as the repair bill goes, I didn't find it that outrageous. As a structural engineer, there can be a lot of damage after an impact that is hidden. Electronics are very susceptible to shock damage, so I am not really surprised that the Mavic 3 falling out of a tree damaged the motherboard. I do share your irritation at how the new APAS was marketed though. While it is substantially better than the APAS on its predecessors in Mavic consumer line, the advertising did give the impression that it was substantially more reliable than it is. With all that being said, I am glad that DJI did decide in the end to make good.

And I do have care refresh. My situation was not a crash. The drone was exhibiting odd behavior while hovering. I’m not thrilled with their service.

    Let's be honest, the only reason you got the price dropped to zero is because you highlighted your KZread channel to DJI - good move, would have done the same myself, as for the damage to the drone, I'm going to say the same thing I say to every case of this I come across on KZread, Active Track should be renamed to Active Crash on next firmware update, it's a 100% guaranteed disaster waiting to happen to people who think that flying it in that mode while around Winter trees with no leaves will be danger free, as for the DJI promo video demostrating Obstacle Avoidance - it is a computer generated rendition of what they wish it was compared to what it really is, the drone is most likely on a man made extended gimbal being gently weaved through the trees then in post edit the entire scene is stitched together with a guy riding a bike like he is being chased by a rabid dog & then sped up. In saying that, I used DJI to repair my Mavic 3 due to it clipping a small similar branch in descent during landing in low light & my gimbal was wrecked with scratches all over the drone & one wrecked prop, no refresh, just straight up repair cost of £79 GBP inc shipping 2 ways, so I was more than happy to receive a brand-new drone back, thank you DJI.

    Carson, you should know that obstacle avoidance is not going to see trees with no leaves on them. If the trees had leaves, which contain a good amount of water, and therefore reflective, then I would expect the OA to see that. Kind of disappointed that you pursued this, I would agree with DJI that you were at fault.

  • @carsonmtech

    @carsonmtech

    For a vision based system? I will continue to stand by the belief that a system of this caliber should have absolutely seen a collection of branches. It was not just one. There were a large number in close proximity to one another so the fact the drone didn’t see that large number of small branches is disappointing. I can certainly see why AT would do better with leaves on trees, and that would have probably prevented this, but again, there were a number of branches that would have contrasted with the dull, white/blue sky

Also active track 5 is brand new and has never really been tested so I really wouldn’t trust it that much. I had some experience with their service in the past and it’s really not the best and 100% not understandable for them charging u more than 600$ for a brand new drone. U were also lucky that they actually agreed to replace it for free cause they knew that u were mad at them with your let’s just say not the nicest emails.
